- Boris Johnson clashed with Sir Keir Starmer in PMQs on Wednesday (19 April), less than 24 hours after apologising to the House of Commons for breaking his own lockdown laws.
The prime minister attempted to deflect calls for his resignation at the dispatch box, suggesting Labour’s leader should instead be focusing on Ukraine or energy prices.
Mr Johnson also doubled down on his criticism of the archbishop of Canterbury, refusing to apologise for “slandering” him - as Mr Starmer suggests - during their row over Rwanda.

@@BenjisBoxingChannel That is a good question, I wondered the same, but then realised the police were instructed to delay their findings (if you remember) and during the period of the emergency powers act which ended in March a new law has been drafted called the Police Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill, which introduces not only new fixed penalty notices, but also on the spot fines in Scotland, which means that all the extremely public showing of contrition and guilt by Boris is an act to familiarise people with a behaviour of acceptance to fixed penalty notices.

He was particularly good in his damning speech yesterday. He should keep the pressure on and occasionally throw in a bit of sarcasm. It obviously hurts Johnson and this nothing more than the worst PM in history deserves. Really he should be placed in stocks and pelted with rotten fruit. But since that will not happen and the speaker protects him by not requiring him to answer questions the only consolation is when Starmer skewers him. Just wish he did it more often. As his deputy is also quite good at it he should allow her to lambast him as well.

During COVID regulations, when many MPs joined Commons over video call and those in the House were spaced apart, they didn’t seem to have all the playground, tribal booing and cheering. It sets up every session as a game of brief verbal flourishes and snarky comments, that limit how much can actually be done to tackle issues and just distracts.
