MY STORY //
Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.
MY PROSTHETIC LEG:
I use the Ossur ProFlex XC Torsion foot/ankle with a direct socket with passive vaccum suction.

Not a native English speaker here, couldn't understand why you introduced yourself as a 'baloney amputee'.... Laughed out loud when I put subtitels on and it said ' below knee amputee'. 😂
Hahahaha love it 😂
I am a native English speaker and I thought the same thing!
HAHAHA Yes, I'm dyslexic, and this sort of thing happens to me all the time when reading. and I am a native English speaker.
As a native English speaker I also heard that. Then she went on to talk about "meat legs" and it made it even funnier to me.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm about to have a below the knee amputation (left leg) in two days. I just want to say, "Thank you Jo for sharing your joinery. You have been very inspiring to me". I just started watching your videos yesterday and I'm addicted. I shared your channel with my sister and your videos are helping her cope with what I'm about to go through. Keep on doing what you do. You're awesome!
I'm ready to move forward and get rid of the many years of pain that I've encountered. Bless you all!
wow who would have thought seeing two legs would be more abnormal than one haha! this feels like proof that we as humans can adapt and accept the things that we think are "different"...following you and your journey has made me learn so much about being openminded and not judge things just because theyre not "the norm". i never thought of myself as a judgey person but looking back after following you for so long, i did definitely have little biases and discomforts around touchy subjects. i really do think you've made me a much better person in that aspect. im so grateful i stumbled across your channel all those months ago ♡
It’s so swollen
I’m nearly in tears when you’re talking about the pain from jeans and being specific about your shoes. I’ve broken my ankle and torn ligaments who knows how many times. Only 1 ankle surgery but 13 surgeries total for me so far... I have so much messed up nerve damage around my scars... even water from the shower ... even that much pressure is too much some days. It’s awful. I empathize with that so much.
Your picture on the 14er made me smile, I’ve been to Colorado MANY times, my Aunt used to live near Breckinridge in the middle of nowhere, town called Como. My dad and brother one time climbed a 14er, Mount Democrat. And my older brother actually climbed in skater shoes....
haha that’s awesome! i love living in colorado 😌🤙
It’s so reassuring how relatable your experiences are!!! Thank you for making these videos Jo!
Assuming they're functionally the same, would you rather have a prosthetic that looks a lot like a meat leg? Or one that doesn't look like a meat leg at all?
So I recently added your outro song to my gym playlist and it was the first thing that played this morning at 6 am (a time I usually never go, and I went alone at that) and I couldn't help but think it was encouragement like you were cheering me on
Your story about your wedding shoes really hit home with me. I had surgery on my ankle five years ago, and I am so picky about the shoes I wear. My family sometimes makes fun of me for it, but the searing pain I get when anything rests too high on my ankle is unbearable. The doctor told me the pain would go away, but it never did. I've just adapted to only wearing the same three pairs of shoes all of the time. It's so weird to hear from someone who had a similar experience.
This is a I love jo button❤️
Aww thanks so much!
Footless Jo 😘 love from India.
Thank you for sharing your journey, Jo 💜
I drink my hot drinks by slipping my first two to three fingers under the handle. And in case you were wonder, I found your channel by looking up what it's like to be an amputee for a story I'm working on and fell in love with your personality and channel. Also as someone who's done design course but doesn't quite know what to do with it for a career or if I'm going to do a career in it (I love textiles and fibre art and would love to have my own shop while doing writing on the side) I like seeing how you deal with life on a daily basis and how certain designs are ableist and how we can make simple changes to make the world more accessible.
You're rocking a cool T shirt there, I wonder where you got that from 😉😂
So great to see you hike again!! 💕
Its so cool to see you smile. I tell all my physios and ots about you and alexis at stump kitchen. With out you knowing you both have impacted my life . So thanks. And fyi. Brian has done fuck all. Lol
It honestly sounded like you said baloney lol. Made me chuckle
I drink my coffee like that too! It drives my husband crazy to watch me grab my cup that way because I’m clumsy as all heck 😂
Yes I am a weirdo and drink coffee without the handle... 👍👍Thumbs up for weirdos! Inspirational and always so positive in your videos 💜♥️❣️
Hi Jo! I love your videos! You're so inspiring
Hi love your videos I get so excited seeing that you posted especially when it's a live stream
Your eye makeup is SO cool here!!!
110% hold my mugs on the side usually rather than the actual hand hold. I use the hand hold when it's too hot, but once it cools off I rotate it haha.
Hi Jo - thank you for your videos. I have had ankle issues since I was a freshman (I am older than you 🤪). I have had 13 surgeries on my left ankle in the last 4 years and am now left with horrible nerve pain, twitching and poor mobility. Sadly, I am now faced with the decision of living with it, trying a fusion or amputation. I can only wear specific shoes and sadly can no longer wear any fun heals or cute shoes (I know that sounds vain, but I used to love shoes). I spent the weekend watching your videos. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated 🤔 Thanks for your frankness and honesty.
This was very interesting to hear. Thank you for sharing.
What kind of pain did you feel with the fabric against the skin? Was it like a burning sensation or a more numb ache? I’m just curious, I’m just having a hard to imagining it 🤔 I’m so happy the amputation ended up being a true benefit to your life!!
Jo, I really enjoyed this video!!!!!
You were lucky, I had 9 titanium screws in my foot after my fusion...hated it! Omg putting ice on it...frozen screws hurts like a mf! Its only been 9 months but I am used to seeing my leg how it is now...and when I wear my prosthesis it does not feel like I only have 1 leg...until I look down. Sometimes it hits me. Most of the pics I have are of my ankle just super swollen. But it reminds me of how I was able to get through it...we are fighters!! #amputeebuddies4life
thank you Jo ! 12:12 meant a lot to me.
Hi Jo. Love your video's. You are such a sweet and brave person. Glad you can walk again and do things that you use to do.
Your so blessed to live in a beutiful part of the world.xxx
Were you diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome? Just wondering because I have after a fluke accident that led to several surgeries and chronic pain and I relate so much to you!
You were always beautiful jo iam so sorry you went through so much pain love jo you always have interesting content onto both your channels
I have a fused foot since 11 years ago when i was 22 years old and i relate to so much of your story... i broke my foot when i was 14 years old and it's been rough. I have degenerative arthritis and I'm trying to figure out how to protect the rest of my life.
I HAVE THE SAME FAT CAT MUG AND WHY AM I SCREAMING RIGHT NOW????? AAAAAAAAHHHHH
Another jujitsuka and yes, I drink my chai the same way unless I'm drinking white teas when I use a handleless cup.
Keep that smile 👍🏻
Karte and mma are to fun I love them
I still can not look at pictures of me with two legs it make me emotional
Love you
Any X-ray of the original break?
what fourteener was that? it looked very similar to sopris but that’s the only one i’ve hiked so far💕
Hello Jo and people of youtube, where can I get golden eyelids, are they 18k or 24k? thanks
I definitely drink my coffee like 'the weirdo you are'...lol.
Jo, is it less painful now without the leg? I need a hip disarticulation...and the asswipe doctor at Mayo tried talking me out of it because of the pain I would experience with the surgery.
My amputation need is because of cortisone injections. I have no clue how you tell people they are bad for you. I had cortisone injections which were the number 1 reason I ended up with such a bad bone infection.
Oh I wish I could send you a photo of my foot screws! I still have my foot, but I wish I didn’t! I feel like my life my be better without it. Question - I know you have fantom pain/sensations, so do those feelings feel like your foot did before amputation? I just wonder if cutting mine off wouldn’t matter because I would still feel the same pain.
I used to drink hot liquids out of my mug that way, but I got tired of them slipping out of my hand, so I had to stop. Now, I've just given up and use a two-handled mug!
God bless Jo love you so much x
9:40 The one who finished last, finished.
What do you mean
@@ellatheellaphant Finishing last is not a failure. Because you finished.
Eric Taylor oh I see what you mean
BABY SOPHIE!! AWWWWW 💖😍
Thank You!
I know this is a little while ago, but if anyone's reading lol.
Is there a video dedicated to how her (your) life has improved after choosing amputation?
Yup jo, im a weirdo like you, always burning my hands by holding my coffee mug not by the handle, like you 😂😂
Great video
It's not fair, you are way too adorable.
I’m a baloney amputee too!
Do you think your struggles with your fused ankle were harder than your struggles with your prosthetic? Or just different?
I heard “bologna amputee.” 😂
I'M A WERIDO! 🥳🎉👏
I don't do coffee but that is how I drink my tea and hot chocolate.
Love you Jo one day can you please explane all the tatoo's that you have i am very interested in what they all mean with this journey that you have been going through😀
This is suck a fucking thing! I had to have 4 major surgeries to remove a tumour on my scalp when I was 10 and 11 years old. This incredible, huge birth mark taking up 1/4 of my forehead with hair growing out of it was also removed. I spent most of 2 years with my head deformed by skin expanders, ballooning my skin, drains, and so, so, so many stitches.
And then one day it was just over, and the last drains and stitches were removed and the swelling went down and I looked at my face and realized this was going to be my face for the rest of my life. And I was devastated.
Apparently I received therapy before hand. I don't remember it.
But, yeah, this is REALLY common. Even trans men getting top surgery feel weird to have their body undergo this much needed but very sudden change.
I started shaving my head a while back when I did public speaking. And when my hair starts to grow too long I don't look like myself so I shave it off again.
It's really weird. Most of us don't realize we have this very solid picture of ourselves in our mind until we under go something like this. Thanks for sharing and spreading awareness!
I drink my hot cocoa like that too
Did the doctors ever consider RSD on your ankle?
I know that feeling of needing specific things from a shoe but jeans or shoe fabric on certain parts would be too painful...
You Rock!
Did you have CRPS?
A bologna amputee, that’s right I’m missing a meat foot.
🎤🕳🤣
I like you eyeshadow!
7 years ago I had to deal with facial reconstruction due to a suicide attempt I have many scars on my body my fibula isn't all there and a Bone of it they put back in but didn't reattach it
Yeah, I’m a weirdo like you. Almost always hold my coffee mug directly, almost never via the handle. I can’t even tell you why.
Anyhow, reality. I am not an amputee and so can’t pretend to know what it’s like. But seriously. Seriously. If fabric caused your ankle pain, it was seriously messed up. With all your trials and victories since then, that fabric on ankle thing was a really bad normal. You very much made the right choice.
I don't drink coffee, but as I watched the video, I was eating my breakfast and drinking kefir. And as Jo talked about the way she holds the mug, I was holding my mug. I looked down, and sure enough was holding it just like Jo. I do not think about it, but it's quite possible I do that a lot 😃. Makes a better grip, I guess?
Rajoba maybe it’s more balanced our way.
I wish to meet you. You are lovely
Me: Confused why you keep saying "Bologna amputee"
One minute later.
Wait...
😘😘❤️❤️🙏🙏
You are charming
Baloney amputee 🤔😅
Am I the only one who keeps hearing “Bologna amputee”? Yes? Ok. Bye
Firstttt
🤨
Hey how r u doing? On ur " memory when i waz a 2legger " u asked how u drank ur coffee? Normandy I'm a right hander , sometimes I'll use my left.
haha she was talking about how she doesn’t use the handle and has it on the opposite side😂
Your Complete
13th
So you CAN do jui jitsu with your carbon fiber leg and not cause people brain damage?
Alas, I can not! But I sure can WITHOUT it. Turns out you don't need two meat legs to jiujitsu still! Just a lot of modification :-)
Footless Jo ahhh ok i was like “hmmm I’m not sure braining people with carbon fiber is safe”
Anyone else loving Jo’s eyeshadow in this video? Loving it Jo!
Awww thank you so much, Allie!!!
Footless Jo thanks for the like! 🥰
Meee love it
Oh yeah, Joe, you look amazing as always!
I love it when you say meatlegs it makes it sound so weird to have two of them...
I feel like she's so underrated 🥺
I know. She deserves way more subs
It’s true, it’s never the horse’s fault! I’ve said the same thing every time I got injured around horses, and zero doctors have been surprised by that line 😂
I’m a new sub and really enjoying your channel. Thanks for sharing!
You have such a soothing voice. If you recorded audiobooks I'd listen lol
I drink my coffee the same way. I'm so glad I'm not alone!
Me too! I know I have already thought its wierd that I hold it that way, I just thought of that the other way!
Coffee weirdos unite!
Me aswell
me tooo!
I totally understand the feeling of clothes touching and hurting so much on my leg. I saw on the news last week a little 5 year old girl had gotten a new leg that can be adjusted as she grows up. It was the running kind. It showed her being able to keep up with her siblings now. It made me think of you wanting to be able to run again.
Still cracks me up when you say "meat legs"...lol
I was looking back at photos of me playing soccer. Knowing that I should have stopped playing earlier than I did. I was goalie until I lost too much vision and then I kept playing for years until I could only play 5 minutes at a time. I haven’t been able to run for atleast 5 years but I remember exactly how it feels to run. It’s weird being able to feel a photo in that way
Great to look back on your journey. We now need the wedding story!
As a para ( walking... yeah i don’t know 🤷🏻♀️. Listening to you having pain even with jeans ( wich i have one with no show sock) really thankful i can’t feel because my brain makes me fall a lot! Super awesome of you to be ok doing that❤️🙌
I looove how happy you were for winning bronze medal!! Everyone should be as proud as you were, because it's a big thing, even though it isn't a gold medal! I hate when reporters say to silver of bronze medalists "why didn't you win gold?" Like seriously!? Amazing following you and seeing al the things you can do now 💜
I had my right foot abruptly ripped off in a work accident. A two ton steel plate fell on it. At least you had a go away party for your foot. 😅🤙
8:20 I am so happy for you. This has honestly made my month. I'm sitting here going *YES! YES! YES!*
I have no idea why your channel was recommended to me but ive watched every video now! You are so soothing to watch and your voice is lovely!
I think the ankle writing is funny. One of my best friends came to the hospital on the day of my amputation. He asked the doctor if he could take take my foot home in an aquarium. We were laughing our asses off, but the dr did not see the humor of it.
Your just amazing, and i love watching your videos. To see you looking back at yourself with two good legs, explaining how you felt then, how you feel now.
I am happy that you are happy: i am sure that you have bad days, but you are so upbeat, i just admire you a lot!
Hello my name linda jones I had my amputate July 8th of 2020
The clicking and shifting sounds like exactly what happens to my knees
As always, great video! When you started describing your memories, I was wondering if they brought back the physical feelings of that time and how that affected you. You did address that so thanks. There are a great many similarities in what happened to me on my surgical journeys and what you experienced. I think that's why I've felt such a bond to you. Mine involved my colon and how it tormented me for many years. I'm not going to go into detail, but I do remember saying goodbye to it. That was a major transition in my life. On another topic, one of my uncles grew up and lived in Denver nearly all of his life. I believe he climbed all of the 14'ers. Doing that must have been an incredible accomplishment for you. I can claim to have made 2 climbs up Mt. St. Helens before it erupted, but I don't think that really compares to what you and my uncle have done. Okay, enough rambling. Thanks again for provoking these thoughts and memories!
