I say this time and time again. The difference between a good band and a great band are the second row. Anyone can play the tune and twiddly bits. But the best bands have a sound and that's filled by a confident back row. Corey definitely have that.
No musical organization is any better than its last chair players. Depth of talent is what makes it sound like this. This brass band sounds like American drum corps on steroids.
16:37 = soprano does his dance after the high notes 16:43 = soprano takers his glasses off and gets psyched up for the final last note 16:47 = soprano wipes is brow, rubs his head and does a jig to get extra ready for `the moment' 17:00 = the moment!
to me they are all phenomenal and brilliantly talented, the band, the guy with the long legs!! and the composer, what an experience and what a powerful and passionate performance, stunning!!
I sat there in the audience and hear this wonderful performance from Cory,... outstanding. Tom Hutchison Bravo ! 02:08 - 02:30 fantastic articulation. The energy Philip Harper has is amazing, just love to watch this guy conduct.
you know you can change your settings in the video by clicking the asterix symbol looks like a little wheel and select the quality you desire. I've selected 1080P its much better.
Fuck me ! That takes some playing .. can’t imagine what the sectional rehearsals were like … and give that conductor a rapier sword ! All hail to that percussion section too !
I also live in NZ and I went to support Wellington Brass this at the Open. Fantastic event brilliant playing top notch. Can't explain how amazin it was
Tremendous music to listen to....absolutely spot on playing an fantastic dynamics.....tough to watch this famous conductor though a cross between Elvis and a Tango dancer and the sop player, who we know is tremendous, the best, untouchable but all those antics???
But without incredible skill, he's a distraction. Fortunately, he has incredible skill, and I agree, it's a lot of fun watching someone so involved in the music.
Seems to me the sop player's "antics" are in fact tics of some sort, it shows more obviously right at the end of the piece when he takes his glasses off and readies himself for the last note. Certainly don't think he's playing up for anybody. And I tell you what, I've never heard sop playing like it, so why should he change anyway? Staggering performance from a top, top band. My only regret is the camera didn't keep rolling for. 30 seconds more. I like watching the reactions of the players. when they know they have just put in a winning performance.
I think Steve shows that blowing is all the way from the feet to the lips. It seems he is playing as if his life depends upon it. His look of sheer exhaustion at the end of the piece clearly shows he gave 150%. Brilliant, and a lesson for us all.
Because I was curious, I watched it at double speed and if you think it sounds impressive and difficult at normal speed, think how impressive and difficult it sounds at double speed
Well done Cory. As near faultless as damn it. Who could not agree that today this band is The Perfect Storm. Every soloist is the best in their department, the support players are excellent and a masterful conductor commanding his troops with guile, sensitivity and authority. Bravo for this and the Albert Hall performance recently. But please Mr. Soprano, no more of the attention seeking histrionics. You may enjoy being a clown to your adoring travelling supporters but it lowers the tone. Behave yourself, man.
Ginger Cornet Hi there, thanks for your comments and glad you enjoyed the performances. I will just add that Steve on sop certainly isn't attention seeking, it's just the way he is (even in rehearsal).
Steve is pretty much "as good as it gets" as a sop player, a tremendous musician and it is so awesome to see someone put their whole body into producing the music on the page. So much better than just sitting there like a robot.

As a Repiano Cornet player, this statement is the most excellent.

From 16:47 someone on front row is playing the sop part (2md?) so the sop can give the last note everything :)

As a retired Sop player I was always sat on the edge of my seat....glad to see the best do it too!
Thanks so much for posting this. It would be a tragedy if people around the world couldn't get to hear music this good.
The conductor is having the time of is life
to me they are all phenomenal and brilliantly talented, the band, the guy with the long legs!! and the composer, what an experience and what a powerful and passionate performance, stunning!!

Clearly, the best man for the job is a woman.
About 13 minutes in, the muted section, the sop playing was just masterful. Miss playing the Sop, dear me.

Brings tears to my eyes when ever I listen to it
I love the conductor's movements in all sections. So much life and emotion in his gestures.
He alone is worth the price of admission. An amazing conductor.
Love this - arguably the finest contest performance on RUclips 👏
The horn section! Nails each of the rips, no one notices. They just do it. Perfectly.
What a showstopper , just outstanding.
For sure the best performance of this
Who the hell gave this thumbs down? Four of you? Must be from one of the losing bands because this is fabulous. Massive thumbs up from Ireland.
No doubt both Band & conductor of the year for 2016. They lead head and shoulders above the rest and the band to beat in competition.
Thumbs way up from Las Vegas
Anthony Murphy Thumbs up all the way from Korea! (Although Im from California)
Anthony Murphy the band is Welsh

This Eb Cornet player is a beast!!!
Fantastic performance, it makes me very proud to be Welsh.
It makes me proud to be human.
The principal cornet player is great. And i think the MD is the best i ever worked with. Great performance!!!
Mr H even gets some 'moves' in at around 8.40. Shows he and the band are really on form.
Bravo band and Philip Harper stunning performance!!!!!!!!!
I wish the video quality was better. This is a first class performance and probably the best version there is. Unbelievable.

Gareth McDonnell audio recording wise, no one cares about the pixels haha
Just Marvellous
The sop player is hilarious
Matthew Loud , Is it a new type of dance ?
Alan Hackett possibly
Matthew you love him don't you!
Anti-hernia movements?
What did he do?
This is just a sensational performance of this piece.
this start is pure power
nono, everything is pure power! ... or beautiful
Spectacular
I played a wind band arrangement of 'Meditation' and I have the tune stuck in my head

I love this band, composer, conductor, performance!
Gewaltig, sehr männlich, danke!
I got the chills watching this performance! Can't imagine what watching this live would do to me!
It was absolutely incredible to see it live. I was totally blown away and there was no doubt about the winner...
Going to the UK and to the British brass band champs is definitly on my bucket list!

Wow goosebumps and I'm only listening through a crappy phone speaker 🔊
16:58 The tuba on the left takes 6 breaths during that last note. Incredible staggering!
he volunteered to stagger for the whole section.. a true team player.

Look at the Soprano cornet at 1:04!
Steve Stewart -what a player ;)

Just unbelievable playing :) Steve Stewart 01:20 to 01.40 :) hahaha..
OMG!
so cool when Steve Stewart (Sop) kicks his feet in the air when playing the top C! (at 1:05)
Cheers from shepherd group, Yorkshire.
If they’re in Yorkshire, why are in the North of England Regional Championships

Oh how I wish there was a professional recording of this piece by the Cory Band…
damn I never knew agent 47 could conduct
Good afternoon to everyone except the person whom'st breathed right at the flugel solo at 16:04
I can tell the intent of the directors ques before they even happen. I see the preparatory motion and my mind just knows its about to get good!

Who is the principle Eb bass?
Simon Howell
This needs more likes unless another band did this better :)

Gvdljoh brilliant.
8:10 watch the cornets' heads bob up and down as they count themselves in :D
