  • Dynasty was premiered at the 2019 British Open Brass Band Championships and pays tribute to one of the brass community's legendary figures, Harry Mortimer (1902 - 1992). Using key passages from Mortimer's autobiography On Brass as the source for the narrative and in keeping with the "heritage" nature of the subject, the work takes the form of a Symphonic Poem, a musical structure first introduced to contest audiences at the Crystal Palace in 1913. The work opens with a four-note leitmotif and the timeline unfolds as follows:
0:12 1 - Harry (One's destiny decided at birth “I'll make him the best cornet player in England”).
2:32 2 - War (Why do the nations so furiously rage together? Fred volunteers for military service)
4:06 3 - Theatre (And suddenly “I dashed to the rescue like a hero in the silent movies I was about to get to know so well”)
4:47 4 - Journey (Rejoice greatly “A new life in Cheshire with a promising band called Foden's”)
7:08 5 - Together (Come unto me “A golden age”)
8:03 6 - Farewell (For behold, darkness “Fred's death surely marked the passing of an era”)
12:14 7 - Amen (The Trumpet shall sound - Farewell reprised)

This is a neat tradition to be watching. I recently came across the movie Brassed Off while browsing RUclips. I did some research on the movie which was about a Brass Band competition and the tribute given to this rich tradition and the struggles of the Miners, their families and communities as the mines were closed up during the Thatcher administration. This reminded me of the competitions that our local High School bands were involved with in the South end of the San Joaquin Valley California. It was a privledge to drive the school bus with these young people who put so much time and effort in preparing for these competitions.

Me too. It must be a common emotion with all of us but once a bandsman (and woman 😊) always a bandsman. It's in your soul. Now I'm happy to go to The Open & Nationals each year and immerse myself in the moment.
      Well, before this damn virus.....

I’m a retired solo euphonium player, and I started banding some 62 years ago. I have to say that in all those years the standard of bands has been going up year on year, and maybe we have reached a zenith with this wonderful band. Can it possibly get better? I’ve been asking that question all my life, and the answer has always been yes. Absolutely remarkable playing by every single player. Thank you, and hello Helen, hope you are well. Steve Anderson.

The Cory, band is one of the finest brass bands in the land. One of my cousins played the cornet in the band many years ago. I am a enthusiast of the Cory band as my father used to take the Cory Band by coach to various events and competitions many years ago too. And to the Royal Albert Hall to the finals of the British Brass band Championships every year when they were held there

Pete taught me at Uni, what a privilege. Super nice and helpful guy. Specifically I had him for arranging, though my concentration was all over the place at the time and I was more into smaller groups and tech than trying to write for dozens of parts. I still learned a lot about harmonics and timbres though. But what sticks in my head most was the first thing he said, to always write music in 2B pencil (best balance of easy to erase and photocopy without needing to be sharpened too quickly) Solid stuff. Outside emergencies, I have not deviated from that in nearly 30 years. Thanks Peter.

There is something magical about Cory.
I have the score for this and have seen it through countless times, the amount of skill needed to pull this off, the three bands at the top deserved their finishes. As I was only there for the first 8 bands, the best band in my opinion overall was Fodens, really enjoyed their performance but Dyke deserved their position but the Sop playing for Fodens is the best I’ve probably ever seen apart from maybe Kevin Crockford but hey, it’s my opinion.

    • @hiimrezgaming9885
      @hiimrezgaming9885 10 месяцев назад

I agree, he is insanely good. I also enjoyed Fodens the most, they have the style of Black Dyke and sound of Cory but more mellow. Cory for me play way to hard at times, but some enjoy that aswell i guess. Tom Hutchinson in this performance is almost 1st place worthy itself tho hehe.

The way they're all using fingers not finger tips to press the valves is making me twitchy!! 😆
    Great performance though.
I had the privilege of being conducted by Harry Mortimer twice as a teenager. Once at Selby Abbey and once in Huddersfield. I was a back row cornet with Armthorpe Elmfield Band at the time, run by Haydn Griffiths.

I loved playing sop, I always said at competitions it was like being a goalkeeper, if you were going to make the slightest mistake the whole band would want to kick your head in because on soprano, there is no hiding! Lol. It's in my heart though, absolutely love it.

A lot of seasoned brass enthusiasts like to listen with eyes closed at competitions. Not sure if other bands are allowed in the audience at championship level (I used to compete many years ago in second section and youth) other players or their supporters would listen to their parts intently to spot mistakes in the competition!

Extremely good performance and a deserved win, but what made the conductor decide to play like that from 12:13 and onwards in that phase? For me that music is supposed to be more lively, and they are playing such loooong notes. Much rather prefer how Black Dyke interpreted this part. Anyone agree or disagree?
