    I can't even put into words how much respect and admoration I have for the men and women in the military, retired Vets, as well as for anyone who is waiting to ship out to basic training. I wish I had 1 tenth of the guts and strength of characater you all have.

    • @LoveThyNeighbor92622
      @LoveThyNeighbor92622 6 лет назад +46

      cmacdhon thank you :) it's not that bad. you just can't do what you want to do while you're in there. "There's no I in a team" and "Hurry up and wait" are 2 main mottos in the military. But never refuse a command given by your superior, always address by rank aka Drill Sergeant/ Sergeant for non-commission officers and/or Sir or Mam for officers. Never address by first name and execute to task or command given. Other than that life in the military can be fun. I miss the life. The Army was and will always be my family. 😰

      It’s not that bad man, just do what you’re told. Yes it sucks not doing everything you want to do while in the military, can’t visit home when you want, can’t go on vacation when you want, can’t leave when you want, but it’s only for a few years.

    I know one thing. Joining the military was the best decision I ever made. I didn’t even think about it. I just called a recruiter, took the test, got sworn in and left. "Likelihood is very low but there is a possibility". I am laughing at this because, the guy who I met at the hotel on the day before I shipped out became my hotel roommate, we were shipped to the same bootcamp, on the same planes, we were in the same reception platoon, then we were sent to the same training battalion, same training company, same training platoon ... ended up being the guy who used the locker next to me. After graduation, we were shipped to the same AIT, same reception at AIT, found out that we had the same MOS, and then got into the same battalion. But that is where the similarities ended.

    The day I went to BCT, I was taken at 04:30 hrs. by my Recruiter to the AAFES Station which is now MEPS. I took another physical exam, had breakfast, swore in again. I waited around and received a very big manila envelope with my files inside. The envelope was sealed and I was told do not open it.
    I received my plane tickets on TWA Airlines which no longer exist. I was told about the UCMJ and AWOL. I was taken by bus along with many others (Women and Men) to the Airport.
    I flew to Louisville, KY. I took a bus to Ft. Knox, KY. The bus took us to the Reception Area and like the Movies there were Sergeants there yelling and screaming at us to get off the damn bus and to line up. We walked in line with our bags inside the Reception Station. It was Midnight.
    Inside we had to empty our bags and pockets and were told this was the only time to get rid of CONTRABAND. There were signs starting what contraband was. We got rid of aspirin, nail clippers, porn magazines, and things like that. The Sergeants shook us down looking for Contraband.
    I was assigned a SERIES LINE NUMBER 30/30 and told to remember it. We were taken to a barracks and told to take a open bunk and got to sleep. At 4:30 the lights came on and it was day 1 at the Reception Station. It was a Saturday so nothing happened. We showered, shaved, cleaner the barracks. We were marched to breakfast, After breakfast we marched back to the barracks, we sat around. We were now allowed to sit or lie on our bunks. We sat on the floor or on top of wooden footlockers.
    We were given a list of things needed, boot polish, white towels, white face towel, dauber, razors, shave cream, soap, soap dish, and other items. We were taken to the pay area and given $50 to buy the things on the list. The $50 was deducted from the first pay of $375 per month. Even if you had money and did not need the $50, you were forced to take it. We were later forced to buy Money Orders because we were not allowed to have more than $50 cash in our possession. Anything over $50 had to be in a Money order.
    This was the Old Army when the DI's got very physical with Recruits who were f-ups. The DI's yelled and cursed at us all the time and the f-ups got the sh*t beat out of them. It was tough back then. Yes the cursed back then and took the f-ups outside away from us so we did not see the beating.
    Screw ups got recycled to another Company and Platoon which was behind us in Training. If you washed out of Training, you received a General Discharge or an UD Undesirable Discharge.

Then they put me on a bus to ft. Knox. As soon as I got there. Sat in same room as stripes. Stayed in same barracks. 3 days later they came to get us. A1/81

    Back in August 1978 the recruiter picked me up at my house on a Monday at 430am, took me to Fort Buchanan in San Juan, PR to do all the paper the work, army physical and stuff, then they took us to a "shity" hotel in San Juan right across 2 strip clubs, then we flew early Tuesday morning to Fort Jackson S.C. for Reception and 4 weeks of BASIC TRAINING. Then they took us in a bus to Fort Benning GA(long ass drive) for 8 weeks of Infantry 11B AIT... then another 3 weeks of Jump School(Airborne) right after finishing AIT. It truly was the best experience of my young life, since I was only 17 yrs old at Basic Training, then turned 18 when I was finishing AIT. THE BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE WHERE IN THE ARMY, Especially when I was stationed in Neu Ulm, Germany for 18 months! Until this day, I can honestly say that I regretted leaving the ARMY after only 4 years of active duty.... The Biggest mistake of my life! I TRULY LOVED THE MILITARY LIFE.... AND YES, I WAS PART OF THE FAMOUS SPECIALIST 4/E4 MAFIA FOR 2 OF MY 4 YEARS IN THE ARMY.

    I was Regular Army. I was living with my parents. My recruiter picked me up and took me to downtown Pittsburgh with my parents following where they witnessed me taking my oath. We were all walking out the door to the airport and I was called back. In classic Army fashion they decided to change my orders and send me to Fort McClellan instead of Fort Jackson. So they cut new orders and processed a new airline ticket.

    Awesome video and thanks for sharing your insights into what life is like in the army! One question though, now that you've commissioned, how come you have the NCO sword on you wall? Was it a gift from a subscriber or your personal one from your days as an enlisted soldier? Also, do you know why the culture around wearing sabers/swords has diminished in popularity in recent years to the point that only the armor brach currently does it while other services use them much more frequently? Thanks again!
