    I'm leaving AIT in 2 days, this is all great advice. The change of lifestyle at first is scary, but you adapt to it over time. Yeah, there are shitty times, but there are also amazing experiences. It's weird, at the time it occurs basic sucks, but even now while I'm at AIT I miss parts of basic. If you ever want to quit remember this:
    1) It's highly likely you'll be there longer than you're supposed to if you quit, you'll even have to watch your friends graduate.
    2) whenever I lacked motivation, I pictured Hilton field at Fort Jackson, marching through the colored smoke to see my family waiting for me in the bleachers.
    3) you did this for a reason, whether it be self improvement, college, a career, or simply to find purpose. Hold onto that reason
    And lastly, embrace the suck. BCT does come to an end.

When he found out I was one of his privates, he said sweet, you must kick ass. And moved on. Being mister 65% really worked! I was in the reserves and my buddies in my unit gave me the best advice, shoot to be from 65 to 75% and they will leave you alone. It worked!

But I had one drill sergeant on my ass straight to graduation then he meet me and my grandfather at family day and his attitude changed and congratulated on what a fine soldier I was to stick with the same mindset my grandfather drilled into my head since I was 9. I was honored to introduce my grandfather to my entire platoon 1 of a rare 70 guardsmen that were shipped off to Vietnam during the war

      @@imjustsaiyan5165 In the military, telling potential enlistees the truth about basic is like filling an inside straight. Most recruiters will not be straight with you because they do not want to risk an enlistment. The first day of basic is enough to cause second thoughts. Lord knows that basic is about YOUR REACTION to the chaos. My advice: find an actual military veteran/professional that will tell you the truth and properly gauge how you react. If you have a relative that qualifies, that is the one you make an appointment with.

    There a couple of questions that I forgot to ask in an earlier video, and I would be very grateful if you would answer them for me.
    1) I cannot remember what the term getting smoked or getting your platoon smoked refers to. Would you give me quick rundown on what that is. I had a head injury in 2004 and there are gaps in my memory.
    2) Medical discharge: I do not know if they still have them, but it is an A shaped wooden obstacle with just enough room between the slats for you to get a toe hold with your boots. When you get top, you swing your leg over to desend the other side. Now say you lose your footing, you lose your grip and you fall in such a way that when you land, you jam 4 vertebrae together and you are unable to move because it is like liquid fire running up and down your legs. Now, lets add to the equation neurosurgeons operate on your back 4 times and are unable to repair the damage enough to permit you to complete military training. what is the procedure is followed at this point and what type of medical discharge are you given and how does that affect your future, I.e. employment etc? Thank you much for your time and any information you are able to provide.

    Matt, you are bringing back memories for me. I went though basic training in 1984 at Fort Leonard Wood. Nothing much has changed in 34 years. My son is at reception station at Fort Benning (11B) and will be going though this in a few days. I never forgot the bus ride ( some of us rode in cattle cars as well) to basic training and the shark attack ( back then there was no term for this) that occurred afterwards. All was quiet as the one drill sergeant boarded the bus in silence. Once we stopped he lit into the group and then we were swarmed! The rest of the day is how you describe it to the letter. The next morning was the scariest. I remember that wake up, feeling so vulnerable and shocked out of a deep sleep as the drill sergeants trashed the barracks, flipped mattresses and had a "gaggle" of shocked privates stumbling down the stairs into the front leaning rest position. Thank You for the great detail you provide.

    There is one huge obstacle nobody talks about much . Lack of sleep. Coming off the street you are used to getting a LOT more sleep.
    The alarm goes off and you hit the snooze. No more of that. You get woke up once and you get up now. Then from time to time you have some kind of security guard or fire guard in the night...2 hour shifts usually. As a civilian how often do you get woke up, stand there for two hours, then go back to bed ?? This lack of sleep affects how you feel while going through this totally new routine.
    There is nothing physically hard about basic really. Any healthy teenager or twenty something can get through the run and push ups. One of the best things to be aware of going in is that you will be tired. Plan for that and you will be one up on those who totally don't expect it...Good luck !

    • @mcoleman6893
      @mcoleman6893 6 лет назад +32

      That first day, drill sergeants latch onto anything that presents itself. Physical imperfections, being tall or short, crying (I can empathize, but for your own sake... DON'T LET IT HAPPEN), too slow, too eager, too loud, not loud enough, being the last one off the bus (do not look for logic. It is a mind game.), not working as a team etc. All of that, plus much more, not to mention when you screw up (it will happen no matter how hard you try. Embrace the Suck.). Get past the first day, stretch the soreness away before you go to bed, and try again tomorrow.

    Ft. Knox 2004, the drills picked us up at reception and we had to run all the way to the barracks with all our gear. We had 1 guy piss himself and another one pass out while running. Then the shark attack started at the company building. In between being smoked, they'd make us dump our gear, very stressfully inventory it. Then more smoking. This portion was probably about an hour. Then we went inside. Inside, they lined us up in front of the bunks. And we had the holding our bags up thing for about 45 minutes. Then a proper smoking with front back go's. After it was finally over, we had to make our bunks. Everyone had their bunks tossed a few times and had to start over. Don't remember what else was on day 1 but it was really stressful while it was happening. Didn't seem so bad after it was over though. Low crawling at valley forge for 6 hours straight was definitely worse.
