seat out of a 72 monte carlo that i used for my 70 chevelle

Thank you for making this video. Literally got 4 estimates for my 69 fairlane 500 yesterday. Shops wanted $550,$680,800 and $1200 just to replace the foam on my bench seats in Miami fl. Definitely doing this myself.

Hey Chris! Thanks for the video. We just installed an upholstery kit from Sewfine for my 1963 VW Beetle and after watching your video, realized we could’ve saved a lot of cheddar by making our own seat cushions using poly foam. Seats look great.

Awesome work guy. I like the idea of using different material other than the high dollar restoration stuff that's way overpriced.
it is WAYYYYYYYYYY over priced..
ALWAYS put those new skins outside in the hot sun for more than an hour.... Do this OUTSIDE in the HOT SUN.... HEAT IS YOUR FRIEND while doing this... I promise you, it is 10 times easier... 2. Put some plastic over your foam, before STRETCHING new skins on your bucket seat backs... they slip on a lot easier, otherwise, pulling those new skins on a seat back is like pulling a pair of pantyhose on a 600 pound woman.
these were easy.. ive done a few seats in my life so far.. the front buckets kicked my butt.... foams were not made right....

yeah at 1:19 I see the crinkle listing wire as your going across marking the places for the hog rings. I missplaced the listing wire so darn it I had to order more. It got smokey and is bad air right now so it worked out won;t get the wire for a few days. I m going to recover my 76 Silverado seat next summer or if I have time before fall.

Ive recovered several seats by now. A couple of good tips.
1. put your new seat covers out in the hot sun for an hour or more before starting, that softens, loosens up the stiff vinyl... Better, if you have a black or dark colored car, put the vinyl covers on that hot car in the hot sun for a hour or so, as you are disassembling the old seats.
2. Use some plastic, dry cleaning plastic works best, but a plastic trash bag will work too, pull the plastic over your foam, then.. that warm pre-heated vinyl cover will slip onto your seats like warm butter.
After hog ringing on the new skins, I like to let the seats sit out in the hot sun for another hour or more, for the new vinyl to soften and take its new shape. The corners and every where that you have STRETCHED and HOG RINGED, the stitching and thread will be stressed and weakened somewhat, by letting the finished product sit in the hot sun for a while, softens and gets everything to stay in place, without ripping.

Hey GT I just used some Rust converter Ultra on my 64 SS Impala rear seat frames. It’s a tedious job with a 2” chip brush and a Lot of time!!! It looks good and it’s protected when you are done. You can topcoat in 48 hours if you want to.

Chris or anyone that knows: Of the 3 ground wires how do you tell which goes to the back of the cluster, the dash support frame, and the emergency brake assembly? Thx
By the length.. it doesn't matter which one goes where they are all connected

Hey Chris.. I know this instructional video is a bit old but I just came across it today. So, with this video, PUI upholster recover kit, 2" foam, burlap, hog rings, etc., I should be able to do my 1964 LeMans rear seat.. right? any suggestions please throw my way.. thank you
yeah, your seat is just like mine.. the green foam is more firm but white is like couch cushion
@@chriscraft77022 thanks for the reply chris.. glad you are one of those who follow up with your correspondences.. a lot don't. ok, so just look for or ask for the green foam or look for a particular density rating like 2.9 or so? not too many folks will ride in the rear seat I'm sure but I guess it's good to get a more dense material.

Research electrolysis on RUclips to remove all the rust from the springs and seat frame. Then use a por15 rust paint. Brush it on.
Where can I find the seat covers for cars that are not in a catalog? For example, a 1967 Buick Wildcat?
+Psycho Dad you have to take the old covers to an auto upholstery place.. that's all you can do...

in 2019... it you can’t find them on the internet they don’t make them... I can’t find any for my 1988 G20 Chevy van either .. I got mine from chevelle places so they don’t apply

take your old covers to an upholstery place and they will make some new ones.. using the old ones for templates.. should not cost that much more than new ones

Yeah, doing upholstery isn't rocket science. Experience makes everything easier and jobs come out better, but if you've got the patience, you can save money by doing most things yourself. This mind set applies to a lot of things. Upholstry, roofing, deck building, landscaping, painting, bodywork, drywall, engine building, brakes, lift kits, electrical....you name it, a lot of trades can be accomplished with 10% of the pro's tooling if you have patience and are willing to learn. .

for the foam.. no.. I show it in the video somewhere.. $119 was for the batting only.. the covers were like $179 and burlap like $20
