Unfortunately, waistcoats are some of the most underrated attires in a man's wardrobe. They enhance both casual & formal appearances effortlessly with their wide variety of fabrics & styles. I appreciate them specifically as a doctor for their functionality where it allows unrestricted arm movement(unlike a suit), which allows for performing a physical examination on a patient & for dressing a wound without any hindrance.

Love it, reminds me of the training I received about etiquette when I was 40 years younger.. As investment manager I had many occasions where this helped to select a good tailor... In practice this type of cloth worked really well in a colder climate. Since we moved to the tropics, its all too much and on board our boat I hardly ever even see long trousers. Would be good to have some advice in the leisure cloth, maritime area.. what other than a decent short and a Polo shirt?

Anton, 34 y.o. Russia. The waistcoat is my favorite item of clothing. Its elegant and practical. Personally, I strongly against waistcoats with collar. Collar on shirt, on waistcoat, on jacket - for me this is too much. Waistcoats with lapels are fine. But you need to be careful - lapels on waistoat and lapels on jacket can look cluttered. I adore waistcoats: singlebrested, no lapels, no collar, hiegh closure, four welt pockets, linen back, dark colour.

How do you feel about wearing a Cardigan as an alternative to a traditional waistcoat, to convert a 2 piece suit into something resembling a 3 piece suit? I admit that I don't own a complete 3 Piece Suit. Although in the fall/winter I'll often wear a fine knit Merino Wool Cardigan under my suit jacket, mostly just for some extra warmth... I feel it's at least a better option than the slightly tragic 'Siskel & Ebert' Crew/V-Neck sweater look.

Waistcoats fell out of favour due to the depression the depression caused people to just wear what they had and even in the 40s when things started to go up and running alot of people were still fearful of being that poor twice so even if they had decent paying jobs (lower/middle class) a lot of people were still quite frugal in the 50s people wore blazer and trousers in England not full suits you would ask them way back then and they said it’s because blazer and trousers made more outfits three piece suits were for the elite and wealthy but when the windrush generation came and saw how black people dressed the three piece suit started to come back in. But the fall out favour was people wanted to stretch there wardrobe and most people simply couldn’t afford a wardrobe full of full suits even on RUclips they always get it wrong by saying the 1900s was the peak of formality it wasn’t how can you dress formal if you have no money? You wear what you can tuxedos were rarely even seen a lot of people didn’t have them or if they had them didn’t wear it often interestingly it was the 1920s onwards that became more formal

@@AskOkeyInc yeah I feel like what you can learn from is don’t believe everything you see and if it says it was the peak of formality you have to question for who for high society yes definitely but for the rest they wore what they could the sack suit for reference was seen as very casual and a middle/upper class man would only wear it to really casual outgoings but a lot of poor people it would’ve been there Sunday best (best suit) some people back in those times couldn’t even afford a shirt collar because shirts were detachable collars to save on laundry it makes sense because the neck is the only part that gets dirty even if the shirts clean so instead of washing the whole shirt you just change the collar

Do a little more research on your morning dress. It was quite acceptable to wear a single breasted waitcoat with morning dress. The only exception was if you were part of a envesture or other highly formal event where the only attire was the black morning coat, than yes a double breasted was expected.

Just for you guys to know why we in Britain have our last waistcoat bottom button undone: Leaving the bottom button of your waistcoat undone is the ultimate style myth. The tradition likely dates back to the early 1900's, when King Edward VII first started the trend. Apparently, he grew to be so rotund and fat that he was unable to fasten the bottom button on his waistcoat😂😂😂.
