  • 2020 July The Comet Trip
Out in SE Oregon to see the mustangs during the comet NeoWise which this time would be visible in the NW skies after the sun set and the western sky was dark enough, we watched the weather closely and knew it to be a doozy with temps in the mid 90's. There was no moon so the stars and the comet were very visible and in our camp chairs it felt like we had the best seat in the house. But boy, I don't think I've ever seen the stars, Milky Way, and planets so bright. Alice and I as we were sitting in our chairs enjoying the night sky and planning the next day, decided then and there that the next new foal we find and hasn't been seen before would be named "Comet" to celebrate this amazing celestial even coming around every approx 7,000 years. So we set out on our mission the following day... having two vehicles parked each on opposite ends of our cross-country trek starting at one and ending at another. Her fit bit logged 14-15 miles, which included much zigging and zagging, crossing river canyons going from bands spread out by miles in this region. Read the full journal on my page Mustang Meg/July 2020.
I am not a videographer, so my apologies for the unpolished footage, as much of the camera work is handheld, and quickly toggled from stills to vids, often dealing with winds which cause a shake or wobble.
A big Thank You to Jeanne Kuhns for allowing me to use her music.. she wrote and sang the song "Edge of the World" in the video.
I hope you hit the subscribe button to my channel, Mustang Meg, and get notified about other videos! Thank you!
Keep the WILD in our WEST and our WEST WILD!
    Mustang Meg

Dear Meg, I have only seen a few of your expert videos so far. I haven't seen any cattle; does this mean there aren't any in these areas or do they just come through at certain times? I certainly don't see any degraded land nonetheless. Are your subjects under particular threat of removal? Thanks.

Hi Karen. All HMAs in our ten western states are subject for gathers- typically every 4-5 years. This range in SE Oregon has had small 100 horse bait-trap gathers in 2016, 2017, and 2018, taking out horses between 1-6 for adoptions while leaving the important nuclear family intact for the most part. While all public lands out west are multi-use, but 'Herd Management Areas' are with mustangs and burros as the *priority species*... so if there are concerns for forage or water for example, mustangs and burros will be the priority and livestock removed. Oregon balances wild horses and livestock very well, only having cattle on the ranges (HMA's) for four months at a time- May to Sept. Some of my videos you'll see a few cows, but I also I don't position myself where they are photobombers, if there are any LOL. Here in Oregon, they've established a very good multi-use balance on the range- a model for other states.
What is confusing, and why many read or hear of debates/arguments about cattle, mustangs, and ranges, there are various land types that have a wild horse population. Besides the HMAs (which I used as an example above, they are the "Official" areas), there are also HA's (Herd Areas) which are not official but areas outside of HMA's which mustangs may have migrated out of. There are also mustang/burro populations on other federal lands (ie Fish & Wildlife, etc), and also private lands. Management of wild horses are different for all those areas. Just remember that HMA's (herd management areas) are the official identified and protected lands where wild horses/burros were found in 1971 when the Wild Horses and Burros Act was written in law.

I am in love with your videos of wild horses. I grew up in the willamette valley of Oregon nearly 80 years ago dreaming of wild horses and the Oregon trail. I now live near Reno, NV., where there are also many wild horses but nobody has documented them in the artistic way you have done in the Steens. During my childhood my only access to seeing beautiful horses was from books and mostly Lone Ranger comic books. I drew pictures of horses for my friends but didn’t see them in person as I grew up on a strawberry farm. I am now an artist painting landscapes but I would love to paint horses and would very much like to paint some of horses from your beautiful photographs. Is there any chance I could have your permission to do that? If not I understand.

The link that appeared on my Facebook feed has a typo. It reads muatangmeg, instead of mustangmeg. I corrected it, and got to the site. :)
