Great game! Those gold leaf things increase the speed of your axe recharge if I recall. Also, there’s a secret spot on 3B where the logs float down the waterfall, take them down and jump right.

I remember seeing the Ad for this in a magazine as a kid and drooling over the Graphics of this screenshot fighting a giant boss in a jungle zone.
These graphics are very good for 1988
The main character's name is "Gogan" who is searching for his captured lady "Flare" with his legendary axe "Sting". Didn't see anyone mention, so there ya go!

I remember this game frustrating the hell out of me when I was a kid. Had the sequel as well and enjoyed it more than the first.
Legendary Axe was my favorite launch game on Turbografx-16 beside R-Type, Blazing Lasers and Vigilante
This game deserves a re-master with scrolling 3D backgrounds and improved sprites

This game is similar to the arcade game ;The Astayanax.
I think there are relations I believe the same people worked on it. Astyanax on NES is one of my favorite NES games
This made me pull out my PC Engine with everdrive. Also made me remember why I only ever play halfway through Legendary Axe.
L Axe is a nice game but L Axe 2 is fantastic. Played 2 back when it first dropped and 1 much later on. Don't know if the nostalgia affects the way I remember them but great little series.
The holes in the trees remind me of the holes in the fences in Total Recall. I was waiting for fists to come out of them.

Trip out. I discovered this game right around the same time as Mike (a couple weeks ago). It took me a week of playing it but I beat it. It's the kind of game where it's easy once you know what to do but impossible otherwise. For example the Punjobs AKA the guys with spears (that really is their name in the manual) are easily defeated with one jumping attack at full charge. The last boss in this game looks hilarious. You can see him at the end of my playthrough I uploaded.
Love this game. Main character reminds me of greendog the beached surfer dude but with an axe.
I've always wanted to get farther in this game than what I have played and I think when I get home today I'm going to give it a shot and not give up for a good couple hours and see what I can accomplish

I've played a game similar to this on the NES, called Astyanax. Similar mechanics at least.
I always remember it as the game that had a stage called Rent lol.
The same developers made both games. Arcade Astyanax too 😉
NES Astyanax is one of my favorite NES games. Love the gameplay, music, and even the cheesy story. Cutie the fairy :D

The 2nd one is fun but extremely easy in comparison.

Spock could still be recovering from 3 and that’s why he acts that way in 5. (And it’s explicit in 4 that he isn’t fully recovered.
McCoy even says grumpily he liked him better before he died.
Also 4 made a shit ton of money and was funny so 5 was trying to carry that on. And even succeeded I’d say.

It's one of my favorite TG16 games.
Very similar to Astyanax on NES. I used to own both as a kid.
Astyanax also had an arcade version. The final level had a funny twist.

I like Joyce Dewitt more than Suzanne Somers, and I just turned 32. Oh and Don knotts is the better landlord, Norman is good but he can't beat Don.

It's pretty much the same game made by the same people I believe. I think changes were made for Astyanax though from the arcade game. Different story and such but to me Astyanax is waaay better with better music and story.

this game should be called Ultimate Tinnitus Simulator. Imagine the guy thinking that putting in that sound effect was a good idea. Other than that the music is pretty excellent

Games like this that have randomized pickups always piss me off. Its like some times on that waterfall level the game will hand out health to you like candy when you dont need it. Then you do need it on a run at the boss and you just get bad luck where every pickup is a blue points gem instead of health. Its almost like the game is saying "fuck you, you're going to die. Start over"
I like this game too, but I couldn't get too far in it.
The axe of the main character is legendary in the game. The title isn't saying the game is legendary.
Is my explanation as to why that one dude didn't hear of the game while considering it is named Legendary Axe.
Oh Shit! I was just thinking about how this the other day and it would be a good game for you to play. This game and Silpheed for the Sega CD.
