Old Top Gear - Toyota Supra

- This is NOT FIFTH GEAR. If you believe me, then don't waste your time reading the next part. If you don't, then read on...
This is not Fifth Gear...nor is it Top Gear. It's an exact copy of a classic Top Gear segment that was created by an extraterrestrial government established by President Obama and the IRS to convince the nation's population of brain atrophy victims into believing its a Fifth Gear segment (politics). I haven't any proof but it must be true; President Obama himself told me so right after I chased a hallucinogenic fortune cookie with a bottle of bong water.
Moral of the story: It's fucking Top Gear.
DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT CLAIM THAT THIS IS MINE IN ANY WAY NOR DO I CLAIM OWNERSHIP OF IT IN ANY WAY. THIS IS COPYRIGHT OF THE BBC (and blah blah). If you want to download this video for yourself or whatever, frankly I couldn't care less but you are responsible for whatever happens to your own copy of the video. Авто/Мото
Crazy watching this because back then nobody had any clue just how much of a cult this Supra was going to make as well as the tuning capability
Well spoken sir😊
Not no one but it wasn't in public as well
and all the fanboys it would have gotten
@Dusty Wanvig @Darian Tommy fuck off you bots
All thanks to F&F really.
Little did he know, that "spongy" transmission can hold 800+ lb of torque out if the box!
CognitiveDissonance didn't the supra in the early 90's have a 4 speed auto?
Liam S 93.5 and up
CognitiveDissonance what was the model/name of that transmission?
The auto or the 6speed?

Supra, Skyline, RX-7, 300zx TT, WRX STis, Evolutions, Silvias, MR-2 Turbos, 3000gt VR-4s, Eclipse Turbos. Japanese 90s sports car wars were a wonderful thing.
Can the VR4 Galant fit in there too? oh wait that is a sports saloon so i'm guessing it don't count.
Will Burdette skyline gtr, not just skyline
@bobagopaaa shut the fuck up
Why were? It still is!!
Yep, I think the 1990s are going to be for imports what the 1960s were for muscle cars
“This is not a future concept car set for 2001”
Oh where did we go wrong
aerodynamics
enzo might be an asshole but he might have had a point when he said only people who can't design an engine go for aerodynamics
As wrong as he was.. since he hadn't seen 1000hp engines... and that 1 mercedies car in le-mans trying to become a car of the future... for about a second before its flight became free fall ...STILL..vision matters i'd guess
0:54 before fast and furious was cool...the supra already had the underbody neon glow haha
neons were all the rage in the 90s!
Duke Nukem Off course it was cool, that's why the movie was made. Haha
Whatever Name no just no the neon is cancer
@@EVAN-kl1gg no its not you're just one of those blokes that prefer having cancerous camber, stupid flares and ebay counterfeit deepdish rims on your car
The Max Power crowd were in it well before the first F&F was even written!
Supra, GT-R, NSX, and RX7... the four gods I worship from the 90's
Man I miss the 90's... The most powerful and reliable car came from this era... Too bad with got shitty plastic cars nowadays.
you forgot lancia delta integrale
evos, 3000gt
+NEOBAE77
850 T-5R, 9000 Aero, Swift GT-i, Sunny GTi-R, Impreza 22B.
***** Too much sexiness to be included on this list, its a good list don't get me wrong but that car is on a whole other level.
"The handling is one of the Supra's strongest points"
Yet it's given drag slicks and huge turbos 90% of the time...Nothing wrong with it but it feels like a waste of engineering since people think of when they think of the Supra is a big fat drag car and nothing else.
Good to know their are other people who feel the same way
only americans think supra is a drag car, in japan is used to drift
ALIENdrifter66 but you're an alien so how would you know that
Drake1416 i'd say that's just an indication of how amazing the toyota supra is.a large amount of them are modified for straight line racing because it's a good platform for doing so, yet it's capable of more than that.
Drake1416 The supra is a known drag car now because it can hold over 800 hp on the stock bottom end... i'm not going any further with other reasons why its a drag car, because you obviously don't know a lot of about the supra platform.
I think the Supra has aged really well and looks just as good as it ever did. A mate had one and he loved it.
And then Antilag was paired with the turbos later on, and boy oh boy
Ah yes, the Toyota Supra Mk.4 . One of the best cars ever made. The time period in which this car was manufactured really was the Golden Era of Japanese sports cars. You have Supras, Skyline GT-Rs, RX-7s, NSXs, Lancer Evos and Imprezas, the lot. Those were the good old days.
+ZeroStriker426 and don't forget the GTO's
+mrjaywilliams when did gto's become Japanese?
Mitsubishi GTO = Japanese
ZeroStriker426 thanks i dont need to write a comment now couldnt have said it better myself
Let's not forget the S15
man... pink floyd really makes this video look even better.
I honestly lost my cool when it came on..
@@esoteric1213 same!!
Can you blokes tell me which song it is?
@@nafeeahmed6191 have a cigar
This was such an underestimated car, too bad when looking for a used one it's hard to find an unmolested original
Disagree respectfully. It was all hype and no go. I had one. And while at the time i thought i was the shit, once i grew up i realized i was a tool. furthermore, the reason you cant find an unmolested version is because it's only virtue was and still is that it was easy to modify and indeed easy to make it better... So everyone did....
DAGATHire
What are you talking about? The 2JZGTE is by far one of the best inline 6 of all time and it came with a GETRAG 6 speed transmission which is absolutely fantastic. Perhaps you had the N/A version which is a LOT less powerful. You can get over 500HP without even touching the internals of the engine...
ThePapyJay Hey. Like i said "I disagree respectfully". It was and is over hyped and as i said, ill repeat it for you so you understand "it's only virtue was and still is that it was easy to modify and indeed easy to make it better... So everyone did.... " If that's your thing, modding cars, then this is a great car. (no argument there)
If you however couldn't care less about modding cars (ME) then it was a bit shit. ANd Making an engine produce 500+ horse power without making the chassis/suspension better is a bit stupid. Anyway, I was talking about the off the shelf car. Not it's modding potential. Or any modded versions regardless of how much or little modding was done. Furthermore, I disagreed respectfully with the other poster based on my own considerable experience with an unmodified car. So why are you asking me what im talking about. It's blatantly obvious what im talking about. Don't be butt hurt because someone doesn't like a car that you like. It's called having an opinion. It's like assholes. Everyone has one.
If you say the stock 2JZGTE was shitty for a 30 grands car at this time, I have no idea what may satisfy you.
As for the 500+hp being stupid without modifying the chassis... Well that shows some seriously lack of knowledge about the car.
All in all, this car was most probably the fastest and most reliable in his category, as well as being an extremely good car for people into car modding.
Have a good day and good luck finding a car that will fit your seemingly unsatisfiable requirements.
DAGATHire
If you are talking about the fact that many people who drive this are idiots, i can partly agree. There seem to be many people who think they are "the shit" when they own one. But on the other hand, these people always think like that, be it a civic, a Benz or Golf. If you really think the car wasn't good however, i cannot agree with you. Even in its stock form it is a really fun car do drive in. I do not know if it was the "best" back then, but i certainly know it is really fun to drive and looks very nice in its stock form ( i dont like most bodykits at all, BUT thats an opinion). The engine is really really reliable, i know people who have driven the 2jz in stock form for more than 200k miles and ongoing without any problems. I think overall its a really great GT-Car. It is not really a sports car, but i personally like it even in stock form. Hell, even the N/A models have enough power to get problems with the police. Plus they sound mental with just a catback exhaust.
I would still love to see Clarkson test one of these, even though they are old cars they have everything he likes in a car....
Big straight 6 up front, 6 speeds in the middle and power at the back. Add the right hand drive and the two fat slugs under the hood, he would enjoy it for sure. Ive seen him test the R34 but ive yet to see him in an MK4
Car parts sound like pornography now
Love MKIV Supras
Why is everyone hating on Tiff? He doesnt bother me
Because he is a prejudiced dick who can't ever get over his preconceptions of brands when reviewing cars.
@Rashidul Karim but that's why there's 3 of them. To get each other to admit what the car really is like, putting their brand preferences apart
@@MD-uu5nt Most people who drool over the supra can't lmao
@@MD-uu5nt
Yes cars have always had a brand so are you trying to say cars should have no brand.
@@MD-uu5nt So Chris Harris then, though he's just totally out of touch with anything the "normal" person drives.
All these kids thinking this is Fifth Gear :')
Not to offend you but you sound like a boomer 😂

Lol, it's like watching Dr. No for the first time and be like "Wait! That's not Daniel Craig!"
That last part--such a commendable display of intelligence and reverence towards other car enthusiasts. May your wisdom be immortalized for future inspiration or demotivation.
lol, futuristic concept car from 2001.
Anthony Suarez oh my goooooooooood! thankyou all mighty powerful one. i would never had KNOWN! it's almost like i was laughing at the extreme increase of technological advancements
You do realize the Supra is still better than a lot of current 2015 model cars, right?
Rob Luce it depends on what mk, what condition, if it's stock or modded, street legal or not, safety equipment. if you were to highlight how it's better that'd be great.
Gotta love the comedic value of youtube comments.

the only comedy is stupid on youtube.
The effects and music in the intro, HOLY SHIT.
Can't remember how many times I've been rewatching this just for that intro, damn.
That lift up underground garage was amazing, and the neon installments on the supra are pretty sick too, but I lost it at the deployable spoiler, but the damn US spec model didn't have it if I remember right. :/
NJTCOMET
Yeah, that lip was JDM only as far I know.
And me 😂😂
in the future of the year 2001, WOW !!!
+kicksoffs lol :DD
By then it was realized the Supra was so expensive to make, it was priced out of existence. Then 2001 comes along as does the F&F franchise :D
Old Top Gear is just too fun to watch
the first line got me about 2001, shits still more impressive then most cars today
All people are too wanting and stock supra are super rare now.
Ahhhh I hate it when people close the trunk from the spoiler!
there's literally no other way with a classic scooby lol
Ummm yes there is. Youre supposed to close it like there isnt a spoiler there. Thats what every bodykit specialist will tell ya when you fit one.
Tommy Orr Jr no, I use it on my sti spoiler everytime. it says it in the manual, "close trunk with spoiler..." I swears it do
the inertia and weight does the work, you will not damage it by doing that.
This mainly applies to fake, esthetic spoilers in ricer body kits. Any real spoiler capable of a couple hundred pounds of down force (or well over a 1000 pounds in say the Viper ACR) can handle 15 pounds of pressure shutting the trunk.
Absolute beast of a car, even in 2014. Had my first one in 2004 and recently bought my second one back in November.
why do you need 2 supras ???
Saric Milan - I had to sell my first one as it was too expensive to run at the time, but always told myself I would get another.
you lucky boy
You sure made one hell of an investment
You got lucky in buying it in that age
The Supra's the Delorean of the 90s.
yeah I can see that
how in any way if Delorean failed in every way?
The Delorean captured the spirit of the 80's, even if it didn't fully deliver it, the Supra not only captured the spirit of the 90's but delivered upon it as well.
+CockatooDude okay makes sense
The countach and testarossa captured the spirit of the 80s and the diablo, Mclaren captured the 90s.
Clarkson looked so different lol
hich11111 he is Tiff.
Nah that was hammond
Can't be, he's too tall
No no no it's James May you muppets
thats not Clarkson you moron, it's the stig
That description though
this car is still a competitor with a lot of the supercars built today and sports car
Didnt realize 275 whp was considered competitive with supercars nowadays.
no
somethingtough - Where did you get 275bhp? The Supra is 325bhp stock with a top speed of 171mph. Yes, that's faster than the most recent M5.
275 wheel horsepower, check dyno vids of stock Supras and youll see what I said is very much true.
somethingtough Generally cars aren't quoted on rwhp though. The Supra is 325bhp.
The description is pure fucking gold !!!!!!!!!! hahahaha
+vGannon - It's true though, this is quite obviously from the old TG, FG didn't exist until late '02 AFAIK.
1990s Toyota was really something with their MR2, Celica, and Supra.
...& today the Supra still killing Lambos, Mustangs, Corvettes, etc, etc, etc...
stock supra cant kill any of them, and put turbo on corvetta or lambo and supra will see only tail lights.... spra is awsome car but as a stock kar she is not good as a lambo corvetta or porshe, btw cant wait new supra.. giulia and corvette are my favourite cars.... alfa romeo ftw
Ill Pill There is plenty videos of 1200-1600hp supra's against Corvettes, lambos, and Mustangs with the same, sometime more power and somehow the supra comes out in front 😉
Supra is lighter, and you can get more hp from v8 than straight six (2jz). And lighter car with same hp wil win... And supra does not have character.... There is lot of videos of corvette beating supra... And I would rather drive any of this cars (lancia delta integrale hf, audi s2, rx3, rx7, evo 789, alfa r montreal, alfa romeo 75, ae86, i could go forever) than supra. Stock supra is not that fast, and with enoug money you can beat ferrari in yugo.... Supra is fanboy car because ff franchise...
Ill Pill Well I can't comment on how they drive as I've never been in one never mind drive it! That is true, stock they are slow but they were around way before F&F came about and were setting records then, so to me anyway they aren't fan boy car's, the R34 is more of a fanboys car in my opinion! Yeah a V8 has 2 more cylinders plus at least 2000cc more displacement, but the fact that a 20 odd year old car can still compete with big V8's with the stock crank, to me that gives it character! but I do love supra's so naturally I'm more biased toward them haha!
Ill Pill dude, you are comparing a 6 cylinder to a v8, that's comparing a potato to a pumpkin, besides, odds are you cant boost the fuck out of an LS on stock internals, thats one of the reasons the 2j is popular, you can make 20 pounds of boost on stock eternals with no worry
i like how he said '2001' as if it was some fairytale time :P
wow, still an amazing car
By far the best era of automobiles. So many amazing vehicles that came of the drawing boards then. Pretty fast for being stock which made everyone want to find one of the many tuners! Even now the end 2021 people are still trying to find 90s sports cars so they can toss 5 or 10 thousand in it and have a car that does 165+ mph. These vehicles are what i fell into love with
I remember exactly where I was the first time I saw one. It was silver and looked to me like a spaceship cruising by. Such was this car’s impact on petrol heads. Hence the weird intro here, I wasn’t the only one. You have to remember the dominant styling of the time - sharp corners and high glass houses, wheels that didn’t fill arches, squarish headlights, harsh sounding engines..This thing was really fresh.
MMM The 90's cars were the best cars we have seen in decades, probably since the 60s! Sucks because I was just a teen then, now that I am older there is very few cars to pick from. Sad, miss the good old JDM days of glory!
Acc0rd79 - couldn't agree with you anymore. 1960s styling and 1990s driving would be the perfect combination.
Faisal Rahman the 90's to people of my age were the golden age of cars, where as the 60's were the golden age before the current one. No one says OMG the 70's, 80's, and 00's had some amazing cars....all bleh.
none of your business and the point of calling him that is?
90s supercars were cool. 90s everyday cars were just a step up from being the worst with the 80s taking that prize.
Cannot believe he referred to the legendary Getrag gearbox as disappointing! They are such capable boxes.
It was a new car , he is talking about the feel of it
This is the top gear I miss. Clean, simple, no gimmicks.
that opening scene is just so 90's
so can the BMW inline 6 N54 engines also.
Just amazing on the engineering!
wow a supra without a huge fart can on it? neat
are you dumb ricers cant afford beauties like these
Asim Rahaman google image "mk4 supra exhaust" and literally every result has a giant cannon under the rear bumper.
+Corkoth55 but they actually sound good, it's a 3 litre inline 6, not a 1.6 4 cylinder.
Daniel Champion you are very much missing the point.
+Corkoth55 My point is racecar. I didn't disagree with you. lol.
never seen such a great idea description...
"With a car this fast it would be better to have the speedometer in the middle" LOL.
the most beautiful car ever made, wish i was fortunate enough to have one
HAHA! I love when years like 2001 are mentioned like some distant crazy time!!
Thanks youtube for the recommendation. Still on after 11 years!
The sickest part of this old video is the underground garage
A timeless classic.
Way overhyped and overpriced. Better off with an 03-04 terminator cobra. Less money, faster stock for stock, responds just as well if not better to upgrades, and capable of handling massive amounts of power on the stock block.
You fucking idiot. These cars are sky rocketing in price as they're in demand and no one is selling.
@@jrvbamafan1 lol
Holy crap, I love this car!
At this point this was just…a car. No one had any idea of how massive this thing would eventually be. No one imagined you’d get 1000HP out of one on stock internals. No one imagined 3000+ HP monsters running around on the street. No one imagined how iconic this car would end up being.
This car had the better promotion ever by being one of the stars in fast and furious. Every time I see one I remember that movie and smile.
Best. Description. Ever.
Steven Fitzgerald ........okay...?
Have a Cigar :)
Kyong Hansen For extra credit, name the vocalist on the track. (It's a bit of a trick question)
I was looking through the comments to try and find the name of that song and it sounds like Pink Floyd and when I read have a cigar I figured it out! Thanks
hiphopaddict007 I know I’m 3 years late but the vocalist was Roy Harper. Gilmour and Waters has both had a go at it but they just didn’t like the results.
2017 and we all still want one.
Really doesn't seem that long ago this Top Gear was on at around 4 in the morning, during the BBC broadcast that took over til local tv resumed for the day on this side of the planet.
Always enjoyed this show but never expected it would become as popular as it did
the description haha
Turbos are a crude way of making horsepower. XD
So you can have massive displacement make a lot of horsepower out of a 8L v8 say 700 n/a or you can make a 3L v6 with a turbo just one make 700 hp
The host said this in the video, I didn't mean that seriously at all.
+iCloud Enjoy your 10000 mile rebuild interval with your v6
what v6? What 10000mile rebuild?
+NoRealPotential icloud's 700 hp 3 litre single turbo v6.
I was born in 1991 and I am grateful to live in era. I love that period and all the cars made till 2000. We should have stopped to simple phones with camera and buttons...miss those times
its over 20 years later and we still haven't had a Toyota Supra ever since
omg that bitch at the end was looking cool as hell
She looked like she was in Monaco too, doesn't get much cooler then that.
2019?
For the time it's made that was the only one engine block, that can be pumped up to 1000 bhp.
Impressive engineering.
i think the supra has aged very well, looks better than most of its competitors now
Haha vintage street glow..
This was before efficiency and emissions restrictions crippled modern cars.
+Walter Black and your mom
+Mike Labonte back in the 80-90's big hp was possible, ( group B WRC cars had 500+ ) it just wasn't necessary because cars were lighter.
+gracedjam LOL @ comparing Group B to production cars. Yeah, the Group B cars had ridiculous amounts of power, but their production counterparts were making around 200 bhp. Also, contrary to popular belief, a lot of cars from the '80s weren't all that light.
Modern sport cars are both things efficient and powerful. How the fuck are they exactly "crippled"?
better cripple those cars and all than humans and animals being crippled by smog and pollution.
Years ago when the Japanese had 100% design control of their automotive products, their cars proved to be the true essence of beauty, reliability & affordability. Their customers were very proud. I cannot say the same for today.
Old top gear beats new top gear. Even when they’re racing a clio against a skateboarder in Estonia for no reason
Toyota please make a comeback :(
They did it's called ft86 . Prayers answered .
Steven Fitzgerald you mean gt86 and its got he heart of a subaru
Hamed AL Wahaibi Toyota answered your prayers. They’re bringing the Supra back in 2019.
Well
@@andrewbryan9363 you mean the bmw lmao
These cars came at the perfect time when dedicated online forums were just kicking off. This is what the 90s needed from the what was mostly a "conservative" 80s from an hp standpoint. $1500-2000 and the Supra was beating 100k+ cars. The rest is history.
+jpratx These cars definitely outdate online forums. BBS boards? Maybe not, but forums? Definitely.
Love the video description lmao
Little did he know......
Who opens and closes a trunk by the spoiler!?!?😑😑
BoostedSrt it's not a spoiler it's a wing
You can do that with the 928 though, it's strong as hell
Back then this car was well reviewed and so it should have been. I miss the days when this was regarded as a exceptional car, and not of mythical ungodly status commanding triple digit msrp’s…..
yeah man miss the days where japanese sports cars where just that stupid gen z influencers from tik tok ruined it

Old 90s top gear, still have this on VHS.
I can't believe how much hate this car is getting. It can make 1000whp on a STOCK block and I've seen the tranny/rear end hold 1400whp.. STOCK. Say what you will about this car, but it's pretty damn impressive. And no I'm not turning this into an import vs domestics battle.
You've seen a stock Supra tranny hold 1400whp....?
It would turn to dust on the first launch. The stock transmission is not capable of that kind of power. Most people get a new gearbox once they breach 400hp - after that, 99% of people recommend upgrades or you're going to blow your tranny very fast.
Same goes for the engine. Significant internal upgrades are needed past 600hp. It is an awesome car, but it is not this god car everybody is making it out to be. It may be fast in Fast and Furious, but in real life it's a 10+ year old car. It's OLD. I would wager that on a track a stock 2002 Supra would struggle to keep up with a V6 Mustang or Camaro.
Adeum Deus - No. Stock transmission can handle up to 1400bhp. It's a well known fact. Maybe not the diff, but the transmission can.
Adeum Deus You obviously don't know what you're talking about, so please shut the fuck up.
Adeum Deus Yeah but Mustangs and Camaros have horse & cart suspension invented in Roman times. You show them a corner and it'll fly off the road....
Adeum Deus Look up Ryan Woon. Most of his videos say stock transmission/rear end. Yes his motor is built, but there are several other supras making over 1000HP on a stock block. Do your research.
Also one reason the stopped making them was that as they came out of the factory, they were actually faster then most police forces without being tuned or fixed at all. The stock version was a beauty and still is.
the 1998 supra ..ahhhh i have a deep love for it... basically because it came along on the same year i was born and when i was about 7 years of age to about 10 i looked up to an illegal street racer who drove one...... i still remember how i felt when i heard the whistling sound of the turbo's from a long distance and the feeling i got when it took off and the thrill the brutal acceleration gave. the second im old enough and when i get enough money il get one.
awesome video! Nostalgia central.
Love the Floyd. Video was from ~1996. Good ole Tiff was saying that body style just came out.
this video quality is amazing! better than HD!
Well, I was sold as soon as the intro to "Have a Cigar" started.
I absolutely love those symplistic dials, just like i do for beamers :)
This plays more like a 90's softcore compared to new top gear.
They had no idea how popular that car would become 20 years later
Don't forget, this is the original Top Gear from 1993 when the MK IV Supra was released. All of the Supras were governored to 155 mph. Without the governor, the Supra would top out at 180 mph.
The RPM is in the middle because shifting is more important than knowing how fast you’re going. You’re ether going extremely fast or slow in this thing and the engineers knew that.
Thats the most early 90's intro as it can probably get xD
@VBSouthpaw I totally agree, and that is what the bloke says in regards to the Supra set up. Its the massive turbo massive lag setups that are "crude" in that they add peak power and not much else.
My husband had one of these in a previous incarnation. He loved that car.
Designer of the FT-86 actually stated this past week that the president of Toyota wants him to get a supra replacement out as soon as possible. It's only a matter of time now after the success of the FT-86. Here's hoping they make minor adjustments to such a beautiful and timeless design.
The good old days when Top Gear was all about the cars and not the egos of the hosts.
did those supras really have a button to control the rear spoiler? that's freaking awesome.
lol that back seat though
What I would give to go back to the 90’s
