I love how you specify the ethical differences between husbandry between pet keepers vs breeders. Arguments get started over what that "standards" should be all the way around.
Thank you! I think it’s an important distinction and a conversation worth having. I spend a lot of time thinking about it and trying to be the best breeder I can be. :)
I’m really happy to learn about this beautiful species! I was introduced to the lizard world when I rescued a baby green iguana - but unfortunately they’re not allowed here in Palm Beach Florida… so I’m really stoked to find out if you have any blue male babies available because I really love to get into this specific breed… thanks so much for sharing your experience and advice and have a wonderful day 😊
Here in Spain there are under protection by the goverment, gald to see that there are people outside Spain and portugal that breeds these iberian species. i dident even known that the ocelated lizard was in the market.
Pretty cool lizards. I like the idea that they eat a variety. Adult size seems to be manageable. Great video. Any other animals on your list you would like to work with? Thanks
Really enjoyed this video. I've played with the idea of getting one for a couple years. I'm just over the county line in chester county and will definitely be hitting you up when I eventually make the leap. Beautiful healthy animals. Well done.
Great video as always man. I’m excited to see more videos especially with your animals in the leaps! Do you always keep those lacerated pairs together or just breeding purposes?
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne that’s awesome man i have a blue tongue he is awesome but I’m thinking I might have to get a pair of these haha I’d love to do a 5x2x2 or a 4x2x3 I don’t mind giving space when they’ll use it I’ll deffidently be watching your website for there availability
Hey Frank, this is cool. I just happened to stumble onto your video after just looking at your Morphmarket store lol. Would you recommend a pet keeper like myself, not a breeder, to keep these in pairs or better off single? Thanks man
Jewelled Lacerta/European Eyed Lizard or Timon lepidus, formerly Lacerta lepida (Lacera simply means lizard in Latin) come from Spain and Portugal which has pretty much the same climate as California, i.e Mediterranean climate, when you want to compare it to the USA. That means very hot and dry summers often 40C or more at day time, and cool wet winters, rarely frost (although it happens sometimes). What temperatures do you brumate them in? More info on that please! There is one guy I know in the UK who keeps them outdoor all year round, in a greenhouse actually as our British summers are rather cool and damp, winters are sort of similiar to Mediterranean, I.e. cool but not freezing and wet. Much linger though
That is correct. :). I have brumation temps and set up in the video. I will talk about it a bit more in the future when I do a breeding video for this species.
I know you said to remember that you’re a breeder, and not a keeper, and have to make some sacrifices as far as tank size, but really… what you do, regardless, is lightyears ahead of most! The fact you actually think of the animals’ space utilization, plants, enrichment, etc. shows that. And your enclosures are far from inadequate.
So I’m thinking about getting a jeweled lacerta and would prefer a male, would getting one old enough to be gendered make it significantly harder to build trust than a baby?
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne my male shows som cloudiness on his left eye when I saw him after some time in brumation mode. But it can also be a trauma to the eye after he ate a dubia in his underground cave and shaked his head in the side of the cave. Just the middle over the black pupil that has a slight bluish tint. Consulted with my rep vet and he said that this is normal and should clear up on it's own when he get out of brumation and his immune system is strong again. Will keep an eye on it.
They aren't particular about humidity at all. In fact they do better when it's on the dry side. Having the humid hide will give them what they need for shedding and staying cool as needed. I do occasionally mist the enclosure down heavily to simulate a rain but it's not a frequent thing.
Great video. i have a 5 yerr old male named Spinky. just love him and his tame as a tegu. worked alot with him from baby. hangs out and are a sosial guy :)
I fell in love with Jeweled Lacertas on Clint's Reptiles. I'm pleased that there's a good breeder like you relatively near me.

Can you show us more on your Outdoor enclosures please
Just came over from Dillon's podcast. Great info and thanks for introducing me to a reptile I didn't know I needed. 😉
Great video, awesome setup. Everyone should strive for this level of care!
Really stoked to get some hatchlings from you soon. I'm saving my pennies!

Thank you! I do always keep them together. However, if I feel the females are being pestered too much I will separate them.

Hello! If you aren't interested in breeding then I would say to just get one.

Hi, do you keep your Lacerta viridis outside all year round? If so then how deep do you dig their hibernacula? I'm asking because I'm also in PA.
I don’t. I bring all my Lacertas indoors during the winter into my garage. There it stays cold but above freezing.
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne Okay thanks. I will probably do the same because our climate is annoying lol
Really could use the breeding vid 🥰
Another great video thanks !
Any updates on the Peter's banded skinks?
nothing new to report at this time. Hopefully we'll see some breeding in the spring and summer!
I have been looking for a lacerta baby, they are hard to find where Iive. (AZ, but I am a PA native.) Great video ! I
Thank you! I will have plenty of babies this summer and shipping to Arizona is no problem. :)

So I’m thinking about getting a jeweled lacerta and would prefer a male, would getting one old enough to be gendered make it significantly harder to build trust than a baby?
It would probably be harder with an older animal. I would recommend a baby.
have you experienced that they post-hibernation will show corneal opacities/minor bluish tint on the eye?
I haven't noticed this.

Ive heard that they are fairly particular about humidity. Do you mist the enclosure? Or does the humid hide serve their humidity needs?

Would you consider them a good first pet reptile?
@@waaahhhl2614 Absolutely. They makes for great first time reptile.
@@ThomasAAT that's great I didn't think jewled lacerta care was that simple
How often do you feed your jeweled lacerta? And at what month do you start to hibernate your lizards?
Two or three times a week for adults. I usually hibernate them from beginning of October to Beginning or end of January.
May I ask what state you are in?
Pennsylvania
Just found your page. Your collection and setups are very nice. I Look forward to new content when it comes. Keep it up frank.
