Living Art by Frank Payne

Добавлен 1 авг 2020
I'm Frank Payne, a biology teacher, reptile breeder, and former AZA senior zookeeper. I have been keeping and breeding reptiles for thirty years and with each passing year I learn more about the art and science of reptile keeping.
While I do enjoy keeping easy to keep species such as Leopard geckos I mostly focus on "cracking" difficult or uncommon species. As passionate as I am about keeping reptiles I am equally so about sharing what I've learned. I am not a breeder that likes to hoard his secrets. I know that the success of others is needed to keep this hobby progressing. That's what this channel is all about
I have my own website where I publish the articles that I have written as well as sell the reptiles I breed. I am also active on Facebook on my page of the same name "Living Art by Frank Payne".

Cophotis dumbara - Care and Breeding
The Knuckles mountain pygmy lizard (Cophotis dumbara) is one of the rarest lizards in herpetoculture and is also critically endangered in it's native Sri Lanka. They are a perfect species to keep though as they are small, bold, active, hardy, and breed readily in captivity. Care is very similar to an Abronia or Uroplatus although I have found Cophotis to be hardier than those other genera. There are currently only a handful of breeders of this species in the USA but that will certainly change as people start to catch on to how wonderful these little lizards are. They make a perfect display species and are very interactive with their keepers. Many of mine will beg for food and jump on my h...

European Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis) Care & Breeding
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.7 месяцев назад
The European sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) is one of the smallest species of lacerta fully grown around 6" including the tail. This makes them one of the easier species to keep due to their modest space requirements compared to their larger cousin the jeweled lacerta. This is also the most communal species of lacerta that I have kept where one male and multiple females do well together. Most lac...

Blue Beauty Anole (Anolis equestris potior) - Care and Breeding
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
The Anolis equestris potior is the crown jewel of my collection. By far the rarest and most beautiful species that I am working with. The number of people breeding them in the United States can be counted on one hand. That will certainly change in the future as this is a very hardy species that breeds readily under ideal conditions. They are one of the largest species of anoles and by far the m...
Jeweled Lacerta Care

In this video I briefly describe everything I do to keep and breed the Jeweled lacerta (Timon lepidus). This is probably the most underrated lizard species in herpetoculture but I don't think that's going to last. Look for this species to become one of the next big pet lizards. After watching, head to my website to sign up for availability notifications and to read an in-depth care article on t...

Intro to Living Art
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 года назад
Hello and welcome to Living Art! I’m Frank Payne, a biology teacher, reptile breeder, and former zookeeper. In this introductory video to my channel I share a little about my main projects and my plans for the future of this channel.
Do you breed these? I would love to study and potentially own a pair
Very nice video.
Also what about at night.. do they always have to have light? are there times to turn it off like day or night cycles?
They should not have a light at night, no reptile should. Following your local day-night time cycle is a good place to start.
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne I figured as much, lol but I had to double check
So.... I see you have two together.. How do you know if you buy them will they get along in their tank? two males is a no go.. but what if there is a male and female and they dont get along well.. or is it less likely that they wont get along if it is a male or female?
It's impossible to know if two animals will get along before being housed together or if it will change over time. Whenever keeping two animals together you must be prepared to separate them if needed. In my experience, one male and one female tend to get along but that is not a certainty.
Realy nice video man 👍
As adults do you ever keep them in trios or only as a pair?
sometimes trios work and sometimes one female bullies the other.
how about an update on this project
Would you say that the white background as opposed to black would be good to include for a blue tongue skink?
Yes! For any diurnal lizard.
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne Great tidbit of info, thank you!
@ something I wish I had learned sooner.
What do you do to simulate evening lighting with heat ?
I'm not sure what you mean.
Sorry. You spoke about what you ue for daylight and day time temps but didn’t talk about how you simulate evening lighting or heating. Do you use night bulbs or do you just shut the lights off. Keeping the lights off in my reptile room during the winter months will be too cold for these animals without lighting or a heat source. Can I utilize another dual T5 fixture with a high output night light to provide heat and night vision for the animals? What’s your suggestion ?
@@petera5179 Lights are and should be just shut off at night. How cold is your reptile room in winter? Down to 50 F is not a problem for the winter at night. If your reptile room gets cooler than 50 during the winter this probably isn't a good species to fit into the room. There are radiant heat panels designed for reptiles that can be used but placing them in conjunction with daytime lights would be difficult.
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne Oh that’s really good news, my reptile room does not go below 50 degrees. Thank you kindly !
Thank you for nice video. Please which temperature do you have ať night?
60-70 F.
@LivingArtbyFrankPayne Thank you so much
Do they ship well? When would be best to ship to north Idaho?
They do ship fine. Unless the temperatures are extremely cold it is fine to ship FedEx hub to hub for pickup.
Great video ! Excellent information. Definitely subscribed. Please do some updates !!
I absolutely adore this species! I'm getting a well started pair soon. I have previous experiences with chameleons, gargoyle geckos and crested geckos. I think I'm ready for williamsi. Thanks for all the information!
I'm looking for a melanistic jewel lacerta...I have nit seen one yet
How many morphs have you currently got? I'm all into that stuff. It'd be really cool if you posted some more vids about this type of lizard
Beautiful species , thanks for always making great content!
hey frank, Can you help me build the carpet chameleon? I live in the Netherlands or we can get in touch. Greetings Michael.
what is the brand of these terrariums ?
They are Leap habitats but are no longer being made.
At what age are your females ready to breed?
as early as six months old.
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne thank you! Have a pair of yours from Allen and I think they are becoming of age.
Such a cool looking Lizard! Just watched your video on blue beauty anole and wanted to say you put together some great informative videos!
This was a Super informative and well put together video! Im getting a enclosure put together for a Cuban false chameleon and have been getting ideas on what I want my setup to be
For months, I was wondering when this video would come out. Thank you for the info :)
New to the channel, commenting to boost! Wonderful little lizard, might keep an eye out for one since i was debating what species of lizard i want to get. But need some space and time first 😅
My reptile room stays 66-84. Would I have to drop these cooler?
Nope that is perfect.
New to the channel, but liking what I see. Awesome video about a lizard i never knew about
Love Lacertas. They always remind me of mini monitor lizards.
Great video!
This is awesome ❤
You said dragon and fish like scales 😂 way different
depends on the fish! lol
Pinecone fish. 😏
More videos like that
Dion put me on man
Great informative video Frank! I love my pair of Dummies, they have their own personalities. They’re always running around doing goofy stuff. I have a few questions. How many years do they live? At how many months do they start breeding? Thank you for everything Frank 🐉❤
I don't think anyone knows exactly how long they live at this point. Too new. But I would estimate around 10 years. They can start breeding as early as six months old.
I've been waiting for this!! I'm waiting on mine to come in the mail, I'm so freaking excited!!! 🖤🤍🖤🤍

Frank. First a great video. Second you mentioned trios, I assume 1.2, had you had any success with this? I attempted it for a couple of months, introducing one female to an established pair. The resident female acted very territorially to the new comer. They were approximately the same age. While in another group I had a female that was still juvenile with the pair and that female showed little to no interest. With regards to the territorial female she would raise her neck crest and body posture the subordinate female would retreat and then she would aggressively chase her. I watched them closely to make sure it didn’t evolve to bitting etc. It was basically color change and bullying but no biting, although she opened her mouth once and that is when I separated them. The enclosure was 24wX18dX36h so they had what I thought more than enough room for a trio at least but the aggressor would never let the other female have a break and she was always on guard. After about two months I felt it wasn’t going to change and separated them. Possibly if they grew up together, I am not sure. I too had thought about raising a litter and leaving them with their parents the whole time but fear once they come of age I might see the same thing in addition to any male issues with the father. I have never housed two males together but assume like most lizards they are very territorial.
I haven't yet tried to keep them in 1.2 but I didn't think it would be a problem. Based on what you observed it may not be a good idea though. I definitely wouldn't keep two adult males together as I've seen males really display to each other when they glimpse each other. I do raise them until nearly adulthood together but I haven't kept anything other than 1.1 once they reach sexual maturity.
Is this the Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka?
So good to see a video from you!
Awesome video frank, I'm obsessed with these . My pair is doing great
Excellent presentation! Love your work. What a fantastic creature.
Are you active in responding to comments here? I have a 9 month old carpet I have a couple questions about. She has been really dark in coloration for a week or two and I’m having trouble getting information on her
Crazy my friend just found a northern he really liked at a petco. He text me a picture of it and it is a pitch black line.
Very interesting! Would like to see that. Did Petco have it labeled "pitch black"?
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayneno sir. Just had it listed as a northern.
His is exactly like the second one shown in this video.
So I'm going to say after my friend has had his blue tongue for a while it is not a pitch black line. All the solid black coloration is turning almost to a chocolate color. It's definitely different but not sure what it would be considered.
I like your inclosers you can see your animals .
Thank you. :)
Who makes the enclosure that those adults are in?
PMHerps, highly recommend.
Can they have tank mate, like frogs and Geckos
not a great idea
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne why, I really wanna have them on twigs on top and the dart frogs on ground level
I live on Indonesia. Native place of these guy. Used to be alot of them in my backyard. Its all gone now. I plan to reintrodice them and currently have 2 female and a male staying on an open enclosure (my bedroom :/) to aclimate to the weather around my house. About the ant myth, its actually not far from the truth. I once caught some when i was young and they refuse to eat anything other than ants (tried giving it mealworms and cricket). And the current one i aclimating imidiately eat some ants that i gave. Not even an hour after i open them from box So yeah, they love ants
I have no doubt they eat ants but they do not require them to be healthy. For years people that they did.
We have these here in the UK, although I’ve never seen any as they aren’t present in Scotland. Thanks, I love your content, and your rep room is top notch😍
There is an introduced population on one of the western isles & I keep & breed this species successfully in my garden in the Scottish Highlands. I appreciate this video but I think he keeps them at way too high temps.
So you keep them a bit warmer than Phantasticus? Are they more forgiving on temperatures?
yep that's right
I need help, i have 2 PBS for the past 5 years. Recently i found 1 of them is sick, i brought him to the hospital and did an xray and found he have mbd. But how did this happen 😢 the other is totally fine, but the other is very weak. The vet asked me to soak him twice a day with vitamin water for a week and force feed him with crickets dusted with calcium and put a uvb light. What else can i do to make sure he is going on the right track or is this sufficient? 😭
Can they make a sound....like how they bark/sream ...i really like to know...coz in our place we din't really knew how they make sounds...
Do you keep springtails and isopods in with them or would the isopods try and eat the eggs?
I don't do isopods but there are lots of springtails.
