I live in Italy. The Mediterranean diet has changed my life. I enjoy my food, I love moving, and I realize how essential true connection to my fellow humans . I eat loads of beans, greens and nuts. I love to walk and cycle. I sleep a lot. Of course I work, amd fortunately I connect with my students on a heart level. I nap! I dance and sing and I sit still. I connect with those with whom I resonate. I limit my exposure to social media. I just love to see people face to face. I walk rather than drive. I cycle every day. I don't go to the gym. I have real friends and we would do anything for each other, plus I really enjoy the connection to my students during my work. I eat plant based. I rest when I am tired. I listen to my body and soul.

Just live a great life as much as u can. Living to 100 doesn’t mean a great life. U want a life that is filled with quality as much as u can. Quality can be simple things,
like having a loving cat. Or a vegetable garden. A swimming pool. But living long should not be the goal. Living a life that u enjoy is much more about happiness.
Many old ppl are not happy cause they can’t enjoy the things they loved to do. They don’t get yo see enough ppl side all their friends r gone. So, just live a nice, enjoyable life of what u like and stop worrying about reaching 100, cause 100 may not be the quality u need. U will need 2 caregivers usually. One is not enough cause u beed exercise. U need the other one to stay up and watch you cause u might need help at night for incidentals. Many capable centenarians can help themselves, but they really shouldn’t be left alone.

    • @ube4856

The cities of Europe and Asia are very walkable since they grew organically slowly over time. A lot of cities and places in the US are planned and many are built around the car. I wish they would change their whole approach to City planning. I came across this one guy who talked about making micro communities that were walkable instead of the traditional suburb so people didn't have to rely on the car and they'd be better for tighter communities in society.

Hard to have a sense of purpose in your life when you have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to pay the bills. The Okinawans have good health care too. If you don't, you might be stressed. I struggle to figure out how to apply this kind of information to my own life. Gardening and making all of my food from scratch simply adds hours upon hours upon hours of additional labor to my days. It also costs quite a bit of money. I have a colleague who lives on 2 acres here in North Texas, and he spends thousands on his garden. He eats from it. And preserves a lot of the food that he grows from it. But he puts far more time and money into the soil than he gets out. So for me, these are things that I can really only consider for my retirement. I simply don't have any more time to get up in the morning before work, or come home after work and basically farm on my property. Kudos to people who can prioritize this, but I don't have the time or the money.

Trying to replicate a lifestyle that contributes to longevity by distilling it to a diet plan is reductionist and careless. So many more factors contribute to the length, or shortening, of telomeres than simply eating a particular way, i.e. cutting out meat. Dan's M.O. has always been veganism, which the Ikarians were NOT. Some ate little meat, and those are the ones he pushes to the front of the line to bolster his arguments, but the reality, just as with the China Study, is that ancient cultures ate animal protein. PERIOD. There has never been a vegan culture anywhere on the planet that lived long enough, or sustained veganism long enough, to leave anthropological evidence of themselves. There are good reasons for this, as the deep wisdom of our ancestors knew.

Generalizations are harmful. Many people want to live simpler. Many would prefer not to pay 1/2-2/3 income in rent alone. People here leave their home towns so they can support their families at home.
It doesn’t mean there isn’t greed in the U.S. and there are Way more people in lower working class, and poor communities, created by the gov, who just want healthcare and quality education, than there are who control who gets access to wealth.
And thank you for bringing that up. It’s called lateral oppression when working class people blame other working class people for the situation that they were All in (not enough resources to live easily). It’s one of the most powerful tools of the ruling classes.
When we step back and look at the bigger picture, we can then begin to assess what we as working people need to do in order to create the experience that we want to have, which for many includes more time with family, access to healthcare, access to time off when sick, access to vacation time, not having to choose between cooking and buying gas for your car.
      Generalizations only cause harm!
I appreciate your comment, it’s important to talk about this stuff. We can’t change it without it!
