- Most of us would count ourselves lucky to live to age 80. And yet, there are places on Earth where people regularly live to 100, suffer virtually no chronic disease, and live life with a sense of purpose.
These "Blue Zones" are the focus of Dan Buettner's work. He's a National Geographic explorer, an author, and a documentarian. He spent years traveling and studying the Blue Zones to understand why these 5 places on Earth produce some of the happiest, and longest-lived, people in the world.
Dan and I discuss why happiness is the key to longevity, creating Blue Zones in our own lives, and how a longer life can begin with simply rearranging your kitchen.
This...is A Bit of Optimism.

One of things I like the most is Simon’s genuine curiosity! What a great interview! Congrats!
Its nice for me to see this interview as I have studied the blue zones for 10 years and have been working on longevity and biohacking concepts where social interactions, purpose, gratitude but also nutrition and movement are combined . I agree that the social element is not regarded enough and technology is more in the forefront. There is another element that is very important which is lack of toxins to achieve longevity. We are mostly surrounded by toxins from air pollution, cosmetics, nutrition and also the materials that surround us. To extend our lives and health-span we need to consider all aspects.
Loved this show and tell everyone about it. My only wish...more episodes.
Stress is killing us. Simple lives, walk to your neighbors, laughter, and love. Best medicine ever!!!
Thank you both for a great podcast.
The largest Blue Zine population in Loma Linda area is Seventh Day Adventist, who carry a "health message"
Im Okinawan. Living in the dc area and I have been building a blue zone project here on a small scale testing things out joe and trying to figure out how money can be generated. But that’s the second thing. First we have been creating the culture and showing up and it’s been reality altering.
This conversation offered a brilliant insight: environment is everything in behavior change. 🔥
Living joyously….love it! Great interview (which I admittedly watched at my desk eating alone)
Mr. Dan Buettner: type-2 diabetes has become epidemic in the US and the world. How are the incident rates in the Blue zones and the cities in the Blue zone projects ?
Coolio..I'm on board the blue train 😅
Superrrb Awesome Fantastic video
Loved it!
Great stuff - got to learn more about this.
This was fantastic! My mind is also popping with ideas, and I'm going to do it, create an ever expanding tribe of Blue Zone Happiness Longevity Moai Connected Friends. Think I need to do some research on Dan's site, then start small, start with family, then friends, then do a silver buckshot approach to all the people I know and as the tribe builds others will do the same. Why not! What's to lose - zero!
Pop me a message if you have any ideas for me please.
Sardinia, Okinawa, Crete and Island. They are all islanders. I wonder....?
@12:40 Apparently, radiation is one category that is good for long health, right? Japan had 2 atomic bombs dropped on it 80 years ago.
