  • If you are a veteran who is housebound due to a disability, you may be eligible for additional compensation from the VA. This benefit is known as special monthly compensation VA benefits and is designed to provide financial assistance to veterans who need the aid and attendance of another person.
What is Special Monthly Compensation VA Benefits?
Special monthly compensation is an extra payment that can be added on top of your regular VA disability payments. It is meant to provide financial support to veterans with severe disabilities that require ongoing care and assistance. SMC is not a stand-alone benefit, but rather a supplement to your existing VA benefits.
Who is eligible for Special Monthly Compensation VA Benefits
To be eligible for housebound SMC, you must meet the following criteria:
Have a disability rated at 100% by the VA or have combined ratings that equal 100%
Be confined to your home or immediate premises due to your disability
Require the aid and attendance of another person in order to leave your home
If you meet these requirements, you can receive an additional monthly payment as part of your overall compensation from the VA.
How Much Special Monthly Compensation VA Benefits Can You Receive?
The amount of monthly compensation you can receive for being housebound depends on your individual circumstances. SMC is paid in different levels, with each level corresponding to a specific dollar amount. The VA will determine which level you are eligible for based on the severity of your disability and the level of care required.
Special Monthly Compensation VA Benefits for Aid and Attendance
In addition to housebound SMC, veterans who require the aid and attendance of another person may also be eligible for an additional payment under this category. This means that if you need assistance with basic daily activities such as bathing, dressing, or eating due to your disability, you may qualify for additional financial support.
How to Apply for Special Monthly Compensation VA Benefits
To apply for SMC, you will need to submit an application to the VA. You can do this online through the VA's eBenefits portal or by filling out a paper form and mailing it in. It is important to provide as much evidence as possible of your disability and how it affects your ability to leave your home and care for yourself.
It's essential to note that if you are receiving SMC for being housebound, you may also be eligible for other benefits such as healthcare coverage through CHAMPVA, educational assistance, and vocational rehabilitation. Additionally, if your condition worsens over time or you develop new disabilities that require additional care, you may be eligible for an increase in your SMC benefits.
If you are housebound or need the aid and attendance of another person due to a disability, it's crucial to explore your options for special monthly compensation from the VA. This benefit can provide much-needed financial support to help cover the costs of ongoing care and allow you to live comfortably at home. Be sure to speak with a VA representative or accredited veterans' service organization for more information on how to apply and what benefits you may be entitled to receive. Remember, it is always best to keep track of your medical records and any changes in your condition so that you can accurately document your eligibility for SMC benefits.
Keep in mind that as a veteran, you have served our country bravely and deserve to receive all the benefits that are available to you. Don't hesitate to seek out assistance and support from the VA if needed. They are there to help you access the resources and support you need to live a fulfilling life after serving our nation.

I SERVED IN A HAWK MISSILE UNIT AND WAS EXPOSED TO RF ENERGY FROM ALL THE RADARS, AND YET, THE VA HAS DENIED MY SYMPTOMS THAT I BASED ON SCENTIFIC EVIDANCE.
IS THERE ANY EXPERIENCE YOU KNOW OF REGARDING THIS ISSUE. I WAS IN FROM 1967-1970 US ARMY

  • @saaugie

I have been requesting SMC-s for 2-1/2 years. I keep getting denied. I was dumb enough to let a state VSO talk me into submitting a CUE claim. Big mistake. My rating code sheet from Mar 2022 says I qualify for SMC-s on the ratings requirements. So, I requested an audit of my decision claim file. I also qualified for caregiver program on Oct 2022. You have to be unable to perform at least one ADL to qualify. According to Matt Hill, you only need one ADL shortcoming to qualify for SMC-s under housebound status. Since then, I have 3 more ADLs I can not perform. So, l sent a 4138 to the VA to let them know. In case they did not understand the first two times I requested housebound status. See where it goes. Now it is a waiting game. Oh, by the way, I ask for congressional oversight because I am done playing games and low and behold the state VSO disappeared. Imagine that.

It has to be 1 disability rated at 100% and one condition rated at 60% or more OR multiple conditions with a combined rating of 60% or more.
For example In my case I have one rated a 100% 2-10% 2-30% 1-40 and 1-50 which is one 100% plus 90% combined rating

SMC-S: the veteran needs to have one service-connected disability rated at 100 percent, and a second or more disabilit(ies) that results in a combined total rating of 60% or higher.
