I have always felt the music of the Dead like the current of a river, sometimes calm and wide whose strength we feel and sometimes impetuous and powerful in its torrent of cataracts. Thanks to share
If you haven't already, check out David Crosby's '71 album "If I Could Only Remember My Name" for some incredible Lesh bass tone, it's amazing. pretty much the whole band backed Croz on that record.
I agree. I love their feel when they just have a standard piano sound. Don’t get me wrong I love a good organ and some Brent years, but that piano just edges out.
When my brother who is 12 years older than me moved out, I was still a kid, and one of the items he left behind was Europe 72… I played the hell out of it when I was little and even now After four more decades of listening that era remains my favorite
I noticed that Weir is singing all of the lyrics in the song on this version rather than Garcia "jumping the watchman"; "catching the train to Tulsa" or needing to "settle one old score". I believe it was sometime during the Europe '72 tour that they began to trade off verses which in my mind tells a better story.
Great early version. The harmonies on this song are sometimes a little troublesome and I never care much when they do it slow, but spot-on here. Phil really having a great time.
We can share the women We can share the wine We can share what we got of yours 'Cause we done shared all of mine Keep a-rolling Just a mile to go Keep on rolling, my old buddy You're moving much too slow I just jumped the watchman Right outside the fence Took his ring, four bucks in change Ain't that heaven-sent? Hurts my ears to listen, Shannon Burns my eyes to see Cut down a man in cold blood, Shannon Might as well be me We used to play for silver Now we play for life One's for sport and one's for blood At the point of a knife Now the die is shaken Now the die must fall There ain't a winner in the game You don't go home with all Not with all Leaving Texas Fourth day of July Sun so hot, clouds so low The eagles filled the sky Catch the Detroit Lightning out of Santa Fe Great Northern out of Cheyenne From sea to shining sea Gotta get to Tulsa First train we can ride Got to settle one old score One small point of pride Ain't no place a man can hide, Shannon We'll keep you from the sun Ain't no bed will give us rest, man You keep us on the run Jack Straw from Wichita Cut his buddy down Dug for him a shallow grave And laid his body down Half a mile from Tucson By the morning light One man gone and another to go My old buddy you're moving much too slow We can share the women, We can share the wine...
Yo. This is so close to when Jerry started splitting the kyrics with Bob, which really solidified the Steinbeck comparison. So fucking cool. Where is the first version of their sharing the lyric to be found?
What show is this? It must've been on a syndicated show on the boob toob. Letterman? Carson? SNL? Who else has a top three? Who was in the lineup? Did pig get the masters?
April 17, 1972. This clip as well as a good portion of the concert were filmed and shown on Danish televison as the show was in Denmark. If you search more complete and better copies exist here on YT.
Phil grinnin gliding his Alembic over the guitars and crushing on harmony vox. Tivoli is a killer Phil show, RIP my ol' buddy!!! 🙏❤🤍💙
Imagine if more shows were filmed in this amazing quality.... I'd be in heaven!

What a great jam!
So crystal clear, and melodic.
Everyone is talking about Jerry Strat, but this is my favorite of Phil's bass tones. Very expressive and melodic.
Alembic bass "Big Brown"
Yes! My favorite bass tone of all time, period. Grateful Dead or not. It's just too good 😎
yes abig part of the sound for sure

@@mfnpjparty I've been enjoying that record for decades! It's a great one. Cowboy Movie is one of my favorites.
These years in the early-to-mid-'70s with Keith and his piano were the best, along with the Pigpen years.

piano really adds to it
@@aquietsense3868 Yes, it's beautiful.
Totally
I love when Jerry played a Strat.
Loving his tone on that Strat !!!
Phil is having a blast, awesome stuff
Big JGB fan, but I always go back to 72' Dead☮️🌲🌍☺️⚡🍄❤️❤️❤️❤️
While the guitars are huge in this song Phil’s Bass playing is absolutely phenomenal in this song.
Love the trio of voices-Phil Jerry Bobby-the original guys always underrated their vocals, Pigpen excepted of course…
Best tones this era🙏
Back when Bobby sang all the verses, great early version
Yeah that didn't last long. Them trading verses is way better imo. ✌
thanks for the video my ol buddy!
Happy 71st Birthday Bobby!!! Love you!!!!!
Try 75
That last riff by Jerry and he does a little slide on the strat.. smooth
lovely playing- Jerry got some neat licks there
dead was on fire in 72. the dead really were at their peak in 72e
Unfortunately so was i

Some of the best!
Jesus
Just fantastic!!! I’m so embarrassingly late to the Grateful Dead. Man could these guys play!!!!
Better late then never!!
Great version. Those amps! 8-)))
RIP!
I like Jerry's tiger guitars but I like best his early 70's fat strat tone. gotta love it.
How awesome. This was on my first birthday.
Wow what a treat! Lucky you got to grow up in a sweet era. I got to grow up with computers 😢

Love it!
We can share the women
We can share the wine
We can share what we got of yours
'Cause we done shared all of mine
Keep a-rolling
Just a mile to go
Keep on rolling, my old buddy
You're moving much too slow
I just jumped the watchman
Right outside the fence
Took his ring, four bucks in change
Ain't that heaven-sent?
Hurts my ears to listen, Shannon
Burns my eyes to see
Cut down a man in cold blood, Shannon
Might as well be me
We used to play for silver
Now we play for life
One's for sport and one's for blood
At the point of a knife
Now the die is shaken
Now the die must fall
There ain't a winner in the game
You don't go home with all
Not with all
Leaving Texas
Fourth day of July
Sun so hot, clouds so low
The eagles filled the sky
Catch the Detroit Lightning out of Santa Fe
Great Northern out of Cheyenne
From sea to shining sea
Gotta get to Tulsa
First train we can ride
Got to settle one old score
One small point of pride
Ain't no place a man can hide, Shannon
We'll keep you from the sun
Ain't no bed will give us rest, man
You keep us on the run
Jack Straw from Wichita
Cut his buddy down
Dug for him a shallow grave
And laid his body down
Half a mile from Tucson
By the morning light
One man gone and another to go
My old buddy you're moving much too slow
We can share the women,
We can share the wine...
The glory days! 🎸🎸🇺🇲
So friggin good
Best opening line of any song...
It’s beautiful , straight outlaws. I love it.
😎thanks
This is so cool.
I was 1 when this was play 52 now still kin

Where is the first version of their sharing the lyric to be found?
I don't know, but the following month (May '72) they split the singing chores. ruclips.net/video/Xt7rCrxrccw/видео.html&ab_channel=GratefulDead-Topic
🔥🔥🎶🎸
God bless Mickey, but I have always enjoyed the less cluttered, more hard hitting sound of just Billy on drums. Just my 2 cents.
Keith is so underrated
Phil at his best 👌
Dot. forget to love
Thank God for The Dead!
Not a lot of views. I guess old school busses don't have WiFi.....
This whole show used to be up on RUclips, but it was taken down a while ago. I remember it had 6-digit views when I last saw it.
soupchicken89 If only it'd come up again
Just four days before I was born.
Rockin
Hey is that Bill Murray on drums????
Yes!
Sounds weird having Bob sing all of it
Yah I like the call and response in the later years , but this is just as good
Jerry Strat Heaven.......
Trip much? One of my favorites.
What guitar is Jerry playing here?

Sounds like Europe 72.
