This was my first Dead show.....17 years old at the time....bought tickets off a scalper right before the show, ....12 rows back, mid floor......walked in just as Jack Straw started. Fantastic
Jack Straw openers always bring a lot of energy and this one is on fire. Bettha had me really amped. Most importantly, you can hear the playfulness in Jerry’s vocals on Bertha. He was really feeling it this night, great to see him into the music.
The Dead said that they loved playing the Garden and always were "on" at these shows because the NY crowd gave a lot of energy to the band. I live on long Island. Every fall was a ritual to get on the LIRR and have "one long party from start to end" on the way to and from MSG. It was literally up stairs from Penn Station. Miss those days. The energy was definitely more present at MSG than at Nassau for some reason. But that was always a fun spring time ritual too. I was at MSG and Nassau shows every year from '79 to the end. Like Lolo Yodel, I download shows that I've been at too. Thank you GD family for letting us do this.
Jack Straw and Bertha are their two best openers. What’s better than playing them both? Lol Thinking more about this, there are obviously a ton of candidates. But none are indisputably better than these two. Music Never Stopped, Half Step, Stranger are up there as well
Bravo everyone! You brought a chestnut back to life.i especially loved the vocals in this performance They sounded very sweet and tender; a rare thing these days. Much love to all of you In all areas of your lives...🎼🎶🎵🎶☮🌈🌈🌈🐻🐨🐼🐨🎸🌷⚘🥀⚘🌷🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲.
Bruce was there because Brent was dead. This was a hard time for everyone. Hornsby stepped in again with the Other Ones when Jerry died. The music never stopped.
Brrrrruuuuuuuuuucce!!⚡!! Tough times indeed. The silver lining of Mydland was the new Energy of the band following Jerry through... None did it better than Brent imho.
Was at this show….well on tour and that nite the boys were straight clicking on all cylinders and delivered us some magic especially in the wake of Brent going on to the next phase of his cosmic journey. Thanks for posting this. A lot of memories and tons of fun
Brent died a few months before, Bruce Hornsby stepped into his empty piano, and he fuckin killed it. That took massive balls. Vince is on the electric keyboards, up in the middle area. At that time, Hornsby was about 36 years old, and was a professional musician for about ten years. He played about 100 Grateful Dead shows from late 1990 til early 1992.
there are many types of music: rock, blues, classical, jazz, hip hop, country..on and on and on. Or here perhaps-round and round...The Grateful Dead had their own brand-FUN. It was FUN music. It made you smile and even gave you time to do a bathroom run (during drums)-just like the theatre! What a band. TY
spring of '90 was the peak of the last peak starting in '87 and finishing arguably in '91. There were several peaks, a different one for each mood you might be in. Miss them badly. mold broken.
oh my lord is this great and bring back some awesome great memories. Music was so much better back than no matter what anyone says...wow is this awesome
Dennis Campbell~I concur...as good as it gets. the mix is absolutely fantastic, the playing is deliberate, confident and f'ing cranked up. The Garcia/Hornsby vocal pairing on Jack Straw is a real treat. Bobby says it all like he means it and Phil is driving a sled of heavy Detroit metal...THANK YOU EVERYBODY THAT GOT ME HERE
Saw all my dead shows in the 90’s. 13 times. Saw them with Hornsby & Marsalis. Some epic shows. Saw Attics live. My only 90’s beefs are Carina followed me every show. And Jerry Died. Bit white haired Jerry wind blowing singing…So Many Roads to eaaaaaase my soooouuul. Yup! Phil Zone forever!
Omg sooooo good. I miss these shows..this makes me feel a deep part of something that helped me shape myself, and my entire life. Dead to the core, and soooo grateful.
Bruce does a great job filling in for Brent. What a hard time it must have been for them all. Bertha was the first Dead song I ever heard on the radio. Loved them ever since.
That closeup on Bruce around 1:30 is the total money shot...his first Jack Straw as a member of the band, and they’re in MSG....you can almost get the goosebumps he’s obviously feeling
was at show first I caught after Brent passed was a hard time but also we were titillated at the energy Bruce pump into jerry an he had that natural play off each other like he had with Brent fire show for sure !!!!!
This was right around the time I saw them for the last time too -- in Denver, also with Hornsby. 12 years before this I saw them for the first time, also in Denver, at Red Rocks. What a difference. What a long strange trip it was!
I was at this show. Phil talked about MSG was propped up on steel cables, well as Jack went into Bertha the place was literally moving up and down. Everybody was channeling Brent energy, especially Bruce and Vince, great night.
Still my favorite Run 9/18>9/20! Bruce gave Jerry and band the melody they sometimes lacked….some of the longest jammed out versions of their career! #EPIC
Even if you know nothing about the Grateful Dead, please give this a listen and let me know if you like it, I was in attendance, Bruce Hornsby had just joined the band. This is as good as it gets from them.

This was a good MSG run after Bret passed. By '92 I sensed Jerry was done. He did some good stuff with Grisman but was spent by '93. That's OK ol'Bear you did good!!
Ultimately, when ASKED back out on tour Bruce declined.Partially due to the 'HOT SEAT" Legacy of ALL prior pianists...Fact: Hornsby was spooked & also decided that the Range (His band) was going to continue, due to tour date conflictions.
Cool how they changed things up as the years went by. Just listened to Jack Straw from '72. It was certainly rougher when they just did the three-part harmony themselves without the accomplished-singer guests. But it's all cool. Whoever filmed this I guess didn't care for Phil. Bertha is rockin.
in my opinion, not a criticism, the music doesn't need, and is better without, the added visuals. I appreciate that you put in extra work adding the visuals to the video, but I'm perfectly happy with just the band onstage playing the show. while the additions are fun we loved the show as it was performed. it's probable that Grateful Dead shows had some of the least theatrics back then. It wasn't needed. the boys did just fine standing (or sitting) and playing
LoloYodel nothing wrong with having a little fun. no offense intended. And in case I've not said before, THANK YOU for the posts of all these shows. They bring a little light & joy in my life and many others as well. God I miss Jerry in this world.
Did Bruce and Jerry have good chemistry or what? One of Bruce's first shows, third I think. This is nice to have, I did not get in 'till Bertha. This Jack Straw smokes.
Well, I think I finally figured it out, Jerry was actually showing off and having fun with Bruce in there. It was the only thing going for him at the time, God Bless Brent. .... and of course Jerry. 🤣
You should get on that and fix it, right? I mean otherwise, why complain?? It's kinda funny considering the dead were never really the best when it came harmonic vocals... Ya got the whole crowd singin' along... and just yeah, get to fixing that, wud-ya...
This was my first Dead show.....17 years old at the time....bought tickets off a scalper right before the show, ....12 rows back, mid floor......walked in just as Jack Straw started. Fantastic
I miss going to shows...but the memories shine bright.. good ole grateful dead
July 3rd, 2019...still here...R.I.P. Jerry, Brent & Pigpen ✌💚🌞
Don't forget Vince and Keith
I want to meet the 81 people who give this a thumbs down, never ever.
Sick people!
Surely you don't want to meet them?? 😅
The intensity of the song Jack Straw and it knowledge o trains to ride and aspects , jus5 a way to know things you never learned until.

Well said....!
Jack Straw, Bertha live.... It's in these moments that all is right in the universe. I love this shit, it saved my life.
The paradox is, that it killed Jerry and Brent.....and...............
Powerful! Im resisting the urge to shed tears. Life is worth living.

Always Remember being at The Shore in Jersey in 96 and Hurricane Bertha coming thru !! The Grateful Dead is a Hurricane to me !! They are Missed !!
Bruce was there because Brent was dead. This was a hard time for everyone. Hornsby stepped in again with the Other Ones when Jerry died. The music never stopped.
That appears to be Vince on keys in Jack Straw. Too early? My memory is sketchy.
There are definitely two keyboards, organ and piano, in Bertha.
That's Bruce on piano. I'm sure.
bruce is on piano so vince can learn the tunes

The whole show is sick. H>S>F to end the first set. Crazy good.
I love how Phil is turned up for this.
Poor Vince gets lost in this mix. He was so affected by Jerry's death that he formed a group called Missing Man Formation.
I always wished Hornsby played full time instead of part time. He added another dimension to the boys.

The Dead were never the same after Brent died. I was at his last 7 shows.
That howl he had.... the hum in that background...not sure if it was his boards or just him... unique and never the same without it.
TOTALLY AGREE
They were never the same. That was the beauty
Bobby in prime form. Bruce Hornsby was one of my favorite keyboard players for the Dead. I wish he had spent more time there.
What a night! I remember oh so well. Thanks Johnny letting me stay on your bus!
always enjoyed the hornsby piano style. i was VERY surprised when he didn't really step out at the 50th send-off.
Omg sooooo good. I miss these shows..this makes me feel a deep part of something that helped me shape myself, and my entire life. Dead to the core, and soooo grateful.
Thanks for this. The energy from the shows on this tour helped heal some of the sadness.

Outstanding! That just gave me the chills. :)
MSG Also has springs in the floor.
Gotta luv shows at the garden !!
The fireworks at the end of Jack Straw are a nice touch.

Jerry's awesome solo on Jack Straw... oh my goodness gracious!

Vince is doing an awesome job on bertha
Still my favorite Run 9/18>9/20!
Bruce gave Jerry and band the melody they sometimes lacked….some of the longest jammed out versions of their career!

Agreed - that 9/16, 9/18, 9/19 and 9/20 were consecutive shows is nothing short of miraculous. And I was at all of them. Good times.
A stressful time adjusting to life just after Brent. The band members forced to up their game. They responded brilliantly!
Bertha, Ramble on Rose and Scarlet/Fire are habit forming and i'm totally into it....
That was beautiful. Thanks a lot.
This was so great, thank you so much.
Even if you know nothing about the Grateful Dead, please give this a listen and let me know if you like it, I was in attendance, Bruce Hornsby had just joined the band. This is as good as it gets from them.
Agreed, Brother. This whole MSG run was off the F'n charts. I was there too!
Dennis Campbell This is absolutely fantastic, love it man!!
Thanks for posting! I was at this show, a little bittersweet for me, since it was my first show without Brent, but it was fantastic!!!
LOVE THIS!! Thank you for posting!

No worries of 'younger folks' gen here, ALL loves. Scarlet Begonias to US Blues. All good.
goddamn that was beautiful.
no brent in jack straw is quite sad. mid 80s jack straws with brent were amazing.
yeah, jer is just tearing this up though...
10/10/80
I agree, even Bobby delivered it differently. This is a an all time great story telling song tho. Absolutely no disputing that fact.
Jerry is on FIRE!!!!

Did Bruce and Jerry have good chemistry or what? One of Bruce's first shows, third I think. This is nice to have, I did not get in 'till Bertha. This Jack Straw smokes.
I'll add these tracks to my running compilation, the rythm GD gave to their music is almost like doping.
