If you're looking for memoirs about people's professions, I'd recommend Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty! It's about her experience working as a mortician in a crematory when she was in her twenties. It's got a lot of dark humor as well as a really interesting critique of how Western societies deal with death compared to funeral practices in other countries.
I read the Silent Patient & thought is was okay, not great, 3/5 stars for me. You are gorgeous & charming, and you have a brilliant insight into the books that you read. I love hearing your take on these. I'm ready for the LilyCReads merch 😍
Ambulances are soooo expensive (in the US) even for people with awesome health insurance. I cannot imagine someone consenting to an ambulance ride unless intestines are no longer where they're supposed to be, a limb is hanging on by some sinews, or severe trauma about the face and head.
That 'it takes courage to be disliked' book sounds amazing, if you do further content for it I'd be keen. It's on my radar now so in future I'll hope to get it from my library! It described perfectly how people from my prior toxic environments would blame external factors and shirk responsibility for their actions so it is definitely being read by me for even more perspective and validity.
My ex used to answer the phone for the ambulance in the UK and she said they had regulars that would call all the time. Protocol dictates that they have to send ambulances out to them and eventually it all goes to court so they can essentially get permission to not send ambulances to these people. Which is all good until they actually need an ambulance.
I feel the same way about “The Girl On the Train” as you said. I ended up really disliking the main character, not because she was alcoholic, it was more that she had absolutely zero tendency in her to even TRY to make a good decision once in a while. It was a painful read. I’ve read “The Silent Patient” and I remember liking it because it was actually captivating. Glad to see you posting more videos :)
A recommendation on books related to other professions: Breaking Through by Katalin Kariko. It's a book about researchers in science (read: biochem) and Kariko's experiences on how the journey was and what are things she had to go through. It's very interesting and Kariko actually ended up winning a Nobel in 2023 despite all the hardships and drama in the field. I think you'd like it!
Girl, drop the lip products! Also, welcome to the cozy mystery genre! You should check out Agatha Christie, she kind of founded the genre and is still super popular if you have not heard of her.
Smoke Gets in your Eyes and other lessons from the crematory by Caitlyn Doughty is a great book from a professionals persepective that you would never think about. It's from her yours as a mortuary assistant, she is now a mortician and actually has a yt channel as well.
When you are in a relationship and the person breaks stuff when they are angry... Do they break their own stuff or exclusively yours?... People can still be in control when they are angry and will use it as an excuse
speaking of paramedics, i know someone who called ems because of a tummy ache and i sat there like, do you know where we are??? this isn't free, sir! they didn't even try to take tums or gas-x or some laxative. just felt like getting a ride to the hospital. i was so embarrassed, i couldn't look at the paramedics
All That Remains: A Life in Death by Sue Black (Professor of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology and she’s a Dame! Very interesting and eventful life) goes into what it’s like working with bodies that people donate for science and education, amongst many other things ❤ Also would love a video on The Courage to be Disliked! x
Adam Kay's "this is going to hurt" and "undoctored" about the experience of healthcare professionals in the UK. Very well written, funny and makes you furious at tomes
Talking about different professions in books, I would recommend Just One More Question: Stories from a Life in Neurology by Niall Tubridy. It's written by a neurologist and he writes about many cases throughtout his career. I found it very interesting to read and I think you might enjoy it, too.
I feel like we went through this phase where it was super popular for authors to write alcoholic mcs because they thought addiction was the only way to make someone interesting or different to avoid having perfect protagonists and it ended up making the protagonist super unlikable and frustrating to read about
Hello idk if you’ll see this but i’ve been watching you since you reviewed one of those cheesy romance books with dramatic covers (enjoyed that era of your channel btw), i was really into reading then but somehow got busy with life so i forgot abt it for years. Quite a full circle moment for me haha happy youre active again lily!
Your ambulance rides are free?? In my area, we avoid it at all costs, because it's an automatic $5K you get billed later. People actually Uber because it's cheaper

"take some panadol and shut the fck up" will immediately enter my daily lexicon

I was thinking to do a reorganisation video potentially since the books aren’t organised on there at all 😅
Shes got a mid year boost 👌 we are blessed
Blood Has a Voice: From the Autopsy Table by Hestelle van Staden - South African forensic doctor. super super cool
I would love to hear more of your thoughts on "the courage to be disliked"!

Awesome, thnx for the recommendation!! 🙏
I like to see the different books you choose to read lily
You either LOVE milk fed, or absolutely hate it there is no inbetween 😂
I totally agree with this haha, I’ve seen zero indifferent reviews for milk fed
I feel like we went through this phase where it was super popular for authors to write alcoholic mcs because they thought addiction was the only way to make someone interesting or different to avoid having perfect protagonists and it ended up making the protagonist super unlikable and frustrating to read about

Your ambulance rides are free?? In my area, we avoid it at all costs, because it's an automatic $5K you get billed later. People actually Uber because it's cheaper
Only if you have private, cover or in a job that covers.
I would recommend War Doctor by David Nott for books about medical professionals I think you would really like it
Meanwhile in America we Uber to the ER because f*ck paying for an ambulance lmao
I was wondering if you've read Green Dot by I think Madeline Grey (?) - it was really interesting because I've seen very different opinions on it!
are ambulances free in australia? they’re like $3,000 in the united states😭
📚📚
💕💕
Some people get ambulances for free??? What do you mean???? 😭
Have you read 'Fresh water for flowers'?
No I haven’t, who is the author??
@@LilyCReads10 Valérie Perrin! Cracker of a recent French writer
I would lovee a review of courage to be disliked!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
At 7:08 since you said the story took place during a baking contest I heard “one of the judges is a massive crepe” 🫠
😂😂
I added If I Had Your Face, and The Courage to be Disliked into my TBR!! My recommendation for you would be to read No Land to Light On by Yara Zgheib 🫶🏻
Thanks for the recommendation!! 🙏
