Definitely in my plans now. I have 3 sets of 862's and 2 actually cc'd at the chambers with 61.5cc and the other set at 65cc's. I have flat tops sticking out at .010" so I will start with the bigger chamber heads and have em resurfaced and valve job. But I will be doing the porting and have em flowed.

Yes Richard I believe it can AND will IF, you do the necessary things to go along with the head change ,running a cooler thermostat( 180deg)
a better radiator to control not only the engine but transmission as well, also a heat range cooler spark plug, along with proper cleaning g and polishing the head and piston tops

Richard, through you discussing this topic so much, I refreshed my 400,000 mile lq4. It had a lifter causing excess KR. I put a Truck Norris in, TBSS intake, and 862 heads. So far I've noticed a substantial difference. The stock lq4 leaves a lot to be desired down low. These nicely add some 2000-3000 rpm towing power for my 2004 2500HD. Less downshifting while towing my cars to the track. I appreciate the dyno time and talk on this subject!

  • @AdamOpheim

I was the one talking about compression. Running a 5.3 (short rod) in a 4.8 will put piston .125” or so in the hole. I’m told that this is so far in the hole there is no real “quench effect” so no detonation issues. On the MS3 ECU you basically run the car in a known knock free environment to get the “normal” amount of noise. Then you set this as the base. Any additional noise is then easily seen. Knock is usually a giant peak and easily seen in my experience. Very similar to the old AEM software.

I have a 6 litre with 317 heads and I did put a stage 1 cam in it for day to day driving , I found it makes great power for towing and pulling with out having to worry about detonation and over heating I also reprogrammed for torque management as I have a drive by wire throttle body ,I found by pulling out 60% of torque management really wakes up the engine with out killing it.

I didn't want as much compression as 706 heads on my LQ4, so I went with 241 heads. Same smaller port size as the 706, but the combustion chamber is just a little bigger than 799s and it has 2" intake valves. 10.1:1 so I have some forgiveness when I use my truck like a truck. I do run 91/93 of course.

I have a L33 that I put 706s on because one of the 799s was busted in a wreck. The engine has a 2000 ls1 cam and a stock tune. It pulls hills still in OD where the old 5.3 would downshift. Running 87 octane under load it will detonate sometimes but that is also me being cheap lol.

I built an LQ4 for towing in my 3/4 ton a few years ago. 706 heads, Vinci 210/218 .551 cam, LT's. Unloaded it was awesome. Towing was a different story. I had to reduce timing drastically to get it to not ping. Even with good gas and some octane boost, on hot days, towing 8000lbs 5ht wheel it would ping. So I got a bit milled off the 317s and put them back on. No more worries. Less snap driving around empty for sure, but that's not really why I had a 3/4 ton truck.

Obviously, the more duration the higher the operating rpm. I’m considering a 224/23x .604/.604 cam and it seems like it would land right in the sweet spot but might be tickling the limit of the 706 heads rpm range.

They had that black sticky crap in the intakes,Getting.020 decked, these will go on a LQ4 ,my 04 crew-cab you answered my question about the 317heads about the bigger flow numbers but different chambers shapes. But. Decking the 317’s to a 62cc chamber size wouldn’t be a better option than a 862 or 706. Or is the entire intake and exhaust that different and not better than the 706. What was gm thinking toward flow if the 317 had more volume than 706 ?? Can’t wait for warmer weather.

Hey Richard I have a Lq9 with a sloppy stage 2 cam 799 heads with pac 218 spring upgrade trail blazer SS intake and 90 mm throttle body with a terminator x max computer. I have twin 3582 turbos. My questions is is that a good combo for some daily driving and around what could the horsepower be and should I put the 317 heads back on or would the 799 heads be ok? And looking to boost around 8 to maybe 10 psi.

Hey Rich, I have a refreshed .30 over flat top forged piston 6.0 and some Wilkes Performance CNC’ed 62cc 706 heads that flowed 303 cfm @.600 & 305 cfm @.650. I plan on daily driving with a little street racing now and then. What would be the ideal cam for this setup? I also plan on using 91 octane for dd and e85 for street racing if possible. Thanks in advance!

I have an LQ9 on the stand now. I also have 706 heads, 243 heads and the stock 317 heads. In addition to those parts I have an LS7 camshaft. I'm not in love with the 120 LSA of the cam but the lift with 1.8 rockers is decent and would give a nice bump up high. Would running the 706 heads help compensate for the torque loss down low from the cam. Is it worth it to port the 706s. I'm concerned about the static compression of the LQ9/706 combo vs todays crappy fuel. I can buy a different cam but this one is lying around so it would be nice to use it. Engine is going in a 65 C10 with a 5 speed, 2.95 first gear with 3.73 rear, just dont want it to be a complete dog off the line. Thanks Richard for any insight, Paul.

What recipe would be good to use with 317 heads like if I build a 408 from my 6.0 would a ported 317 work good or would a 243 or ported 706 be better

    • @richardholdener1727
      @richardholdener1727  21 день назад +1

FOR A 408, PORTED 243s CAN MAKE THE MOST POWER. The question is how much power are you looking to make. Any properly ported stock heads can support over 600 na hp

  • @stephenhodge6441

We talk a lot about e85 vs like 91 octane. I'd bet the vast majority of people modifying or swapping LS engines are not running e85. It would be interesting to see a poll on that. Richard mentioned twice about situations of running 91 octane he would just run 317 heads. So does that mean most of us should be running 317 heads?

I have a 2006 Hummer H2 with a 6.0 Lq4 That is a daily driver. What would you recommend for a head and cam combination to get 500 + hp and keep everything as stock as possible. I want 500+ hp but a tight budget. I want to keep stock torque converter and fuel injectors. I was thinking a sloppy stage 2 cam and 862 heads. Please inform me on any components I would need to buy to go along with a proper combination like high volume oil pump or a double timing chain and gear. I would like to tear it down and build it one time with the proper combination of everything all together to make a complete motor. I plan on doing ARP bolts and studs on everything in the motor so far.
