Excellent break down of the ds roll. Beginners are often confused about the technique. I sometimes struggle with when to throw and catch and when to squeeze out the faster double.
There is literally millions of amazing musicians in the world who never take it further than their room and will never record or even play a gig, taking this into account it’s very important to remember that it’s for fun - not perfection - just fun 👌
hey jeremy, i was wondering if you could break down the song "kosciusko" by midnight oil? my mum loves them and i would love to learn it, thanks jeremy :)
thanks i started studying drum performance and you helped me alot in all of your videos to enhance my drummin' in a very good way! The only thing i miss here is where do i use them in a musical situation? i struggle with this alot... do you have fills with doubles?
Great question Roman! That is best answered by having a live drum lesson with me. Is this something you'd be interested in? There are definitely fills where double stroke / bounce can be used.
ok but how that approach fits into combining the doubles with rudiments? what do you think about the approach of some teachers where you accent the second note on slower tempos and slowly reduce the difference between two hits and the speed increases?
sometimes teachers will ask you to try and accent the second hit of a roll to help you make sure its not weaker than the first one. Personally, I feel its a case by case basis depending on the student.
Great question!!! You certainly don't HAVE to use all three of these grip techniques when doing a roll, you could just do a bounce roll the whole time if you like, but it's better long term to learn all three.
@@E7MusicSchool I would do, but I live in australia, 700km from the nearest city :( Next time I travel their I'll bring it to be checked out at a music store, cheers.
Hey Professor! Can you do a drum tutorial for either Alexisonfire's "This Could Be Anywhere in the World" or "Young Cardinals" ? Both have great drum tracks and I think you'll like them, and your tutorials are the easiest to follow ❤️
Hello Drum Professor- I embedded your video on thedrumrudiments . com on the doubles stroke roll page. It will help you with some more exposure. I might do it with a few other videos that you made too.
There is no reason to squeeze the stick at all on a double stroke roll. All of it is done via the wrists. You follow through and play through the drum, not stroke the stick with your fingers. At 120bpm and higher you don't have time to do that, and it's just wasted motion anyway. Your fulcrum should be on the middle finger if you want to avoid tension or carpal tunnel. An even bounce can happen without any secondary accent, snap or squeeze.
Hi John, many people do use the middle finger as the fulcrum, however there are major advantages for using the pointer finger. As for squeezing with the back fingers that is exactly how you develop speed and control in your rudiments. When playing rolls for a song, you certainly don't have to squeeze.

Thank you. You teach well
I love your all videos sir
So, the faster I get, I change grips like wrist>finger>bounce or is that just like a preferred way of doing a double stroke roll

@@E7MusicSchool ah ok makes sense, thank you, I prefer the finger method more than the others
I'll be scheduling a lesson soon.
I love your lessons! Can you make one for Waking the Demon by Bullet for my valentine? I love the song and want to learn it long time..
I got it..Thanks Buddy..
my pleasure!
Nice lesson, subscribed!
Awesome thanks Chris!
Off topic, but what do you use to mount the Tom to the far left? Do you have to worry about if the pole arm won't fit inside the drum?
I use a J bar mounted to the cymbal stand. you would need the correct sized j bar yes.
@@E7MusicSchool How do I check if the size of the arm is the same as the size of the hole in my tom drum?
@@shamicentertainment1262 Id recommend bringing your drum to guitar center and ask a sales rep to find you the arm that fits.
