Don’t forget to thumbs up the video guys
they also did The things we do for love
You found a good one here buddy! Lol
Love Your Reaction but this is a masterpiece of Harmonies and Wordplay and chord changes that IS MUCH LONGER, my friend!
What happened Jayvee ?
This group will give you 20 songs ALL totally different. Master musicians :)
Thumbs up before you started.
They played this in the movie Guardians of the Galaxy
This song is a straight up masterpiece no question about it
The words "big boys don't cry", was actually sung by their secretary who was surprised by the request! Genius!!!
That line makes the song a classic. What an inspiration.
Cool fact. Thanks!
I didn’t know that
Thanks - I didn't know that!
I’m gonna embarrass myself here..... the first five years I heard this song I didn’t realise it said ‘big boys don’t cry’. I thought it said ‘requesting quiet. Requesting quiet’. 😂😂😂
I always thought that this song had a dreamlike quality.
I always thought that too :-)
Yes! That's it! Love your comment.
I get you. It might help that I often listened to this late at night in my teen years during the 80's :)
Same here
Yes.🥰
10cc is one of the most underrated bands of its era. It blew away contemporary song-writing and orchestration, and was at least ten years ahead of its time. This is a group of musicians which cannot be simply called a band. They were revolutionaries in musical composition. Still mind-blowing a whole lifetime later.
Idk about underrated. That song was on the airwaves forever. Great hit.
Absolutely....best, well, most creative band of the 70's. Fkn LOVE THEM.
Fun fact: synthesizers of the time were unable to create that human voice "aah" sound, so they made tape loops of themselves singing it, used tape speed for different pitches, and then played the mixing desk like a keyboard.
The mellotron, did have human voices, both oohs and aaarrs. The mellotron 400 had them both, and genesis used the sound a lot from 1973, to late 1978.
I saw a video about the song, the way they did the background vocals was so cool.
@@dalebaker9109 They didn't use a mellotron
@@dalebaker9109 Yes, but Mellotron choir tapes sounded crap! 'Dead men singing' they called the sound. Never a convincing substitute for properly recorded voices.
@@alanmatthews9945 the mellotron, is like marmite, you either love it or hate it. I have seen Rick Wakeman twice, and chatted too him twice, he loves them. One very rare sound, the Russian choir does sound brilliant. But the best sound, you will get is a real orchestra, no getting away from it.
Try to imagine how much of this fantastic music and more of the 60s and 70s you have yet to discover. I was 16 when this song came out and it was everywhere. And the brake is legendary.
Huge song back in the day.
Yes it was. It was in 1975, remember it well.
He's in love but is hard for him to deal with the feelings because growing up he wasn't allowed to show emotion, hence big boys don't cry.
I always thought it was him calling her up , and she (his ex) was telling him not to cry.
@@TheInfurnos yeah, that was my initial thoughts as well for quite a while, actually. But the way the woman is talking really isn't the kind of voice that an ex would use to a guy. It wasn't until I saw this version of the music video where the singer actually voiceovers those words, did it make sense that he's most likely remembering something from his past that his mother told him as a little boy. In the other version of the music video, they don't show an "ex" either, but just use a montage of the band, which also implies the voice is internalized and not from someone else.
I like the line ,,, 🎶“ I keep your picture,, up on the wall. It hides a nasty stain , that’s lyin there🎶 So don’t you ask me,, to give it back. I know , you know,, It doesn’t mean that much to me 🎶🎶🎶
One of the greatest lines ever written. My favorite.
This is a song that you don't take the words literally, he's keeping his feelings coy and he means the opposite of what he sings. The man doesn't want to show his true emotions in fear of being hurt... that simple.
Great song!
Genius, I'd say.
-The point of the song is that he really is in love with this woman. He doesn't want to let anyone think he loves her. In reality, He's head over heels in love with her. He'll never admit it, even to himself.
and thousands of women have had their hearts broken for this very reason.....sigh
That has always been my understanding of the lyrics. He was denying his true feelings for some reason.
@@katherinejoseph7133 Ironically the same is true the other way around. It's not good for developing relationships when you're taught to repress emotions as a child.
Yep! As I’ll always said about this song- he’s definitely in love folks! Lol love this song! Strong denial- 🤷🏼♀️💟☮️✌️
Agreed. I always felt he was definitely in love.
@richard nitsch One of my favorite vinyls ...still on the shelf for listening.
Hey I know you.
That boy lying. He fo sho loves that girl! He ain't fooling nobody.
Eric Stewart (the singer) wrote this "Tongue in Cheek" song in response to his wife's constantly telling him that he didn't tell her that he loved her enough times.....In reality, as you point out, he loved her very much. The band searched high and low looking for the perfect voice to say the words "Big Boys Don't Cry" when their secretary/telephonist/tea maker etc. popped her head around the door while they were recording this, to tell them that they'd got a phone call and they all instantly knew that her voice was the exact voice that they were looking for.
To translate: It is obvious that the gentleman is in total denial about his true feelings for the lady in the song As Shakespeare would say " Me thinks he doth protest too much"..
"No chance, no way, I won't say I'm in love! Get off my case, I won't say I'm in love!" XD
@@walshaw2 Yeah, apparently he felt like saying it all the time would cheapen the sentiment, so it gave him the idea of finding this roundabout way of saying it by not saying it.
You can imagine the guy sitting in a dark room looking at her picture of her with a gun in his mouth.
They layered their voices singing "aahhh" on different notes and made tape loops of them and then fed the loops into the mixing board so they could bring in the notes they wanted by bringing up the sounds on the mixer channels. You can hear how they fade in and out. 10cc were studio wizards of the analog era.
Classic of classics. The wall of sound background is groundbreaking.
A good song by them was called "The things we do for Love".
Yes, brilliant, one of my favourites by 10cc
that’s kind of an ordinary pop song compared to this one. Looking for the video of the song that goes little by little bit by bit. Yeah I used to know the name of the song when I had the album 47 years ago.
Also ''I'm mandy, Fly me.'' taken from British Airways ADvertising Poster of the Period. showing a gorgeous Air Hostess in Uniform.
Climax blues band - I love You. 70’s greatest era of music of all time.
No doubt about that William. I'm nearing 6 decades on God's earth, and in my lifetime, the 70's has been the finest era for Rock-n-Roll and R&B. Hands down.
Tony Martinez I agree 100%
William Morton I agree!!!!!!!!! That song makes me MELT.
I couldn't agree more! We had the best music.
Class of '77
Deffo
10CC have made some absolute classic songs. The lyrics in most of them really need listening to as they have a great sense of humour in them.
James Taylor was a huge part of the 70s. This song is a good uplifting song right now
"Shower the People" you love with love
"Youve got a Friend "
"Fire and Rain "
There is a longer version. They barely used instruments here, it was just them singing "ahhhhhh" at different notes and so forth. Great song but do check out the longer version.
You can find the extended version on Itunes. It's 6:08 minutes long. Way better!
I thought it had cut off abruptly 🤔
Yeah, it’s the vinyl single version he’s reacting to here, with the start of the song cut, a really ugly edit at 4:25, and the outro faded out frustratingly soon. I hadn’t heard this butchered version for ages, and I’m pretty happy about that!
OMD used the same technique in "Souvenir". There were looped individual vocal notes on a lot of tracks, and they played chords by playing the faders on the mixing board! I love this stuff.
This band deserves to be better known, so smart and talented.
When I was younger and heard this on the radio. It was different and beautiful. Like nothing I had ever heard before.Love it!
Or since.
Awesome song. These guys had another huge hit with The Things We Do For Love. If you liked this you will like that one too.
One of my favorites too....I am so loving going down my memory lane with you....
Scoot over, I'm on the ride too! ♡
Love this song. Also "The Things We do for Love" by 10CC.
The word that best describes this sound is “lush”
Exactly!
Good word! Definitely. 👍
richard nitsch this HAS to be listened to on headphones, a shame it’s the radio edit and not the full version. If you haven’t slow danced to this, you haven’t lived!🥰
Gert lush
That’s what some called my uncle, but it had a different meaning. 😂
10CC, Feel the Benefit, their best song.
This song brings back so many memories. That's why I love your channel so much. You always bring it!!
He does!!! I look forward to his reviews. He brings it every single review.
I get lost in my memories with I heard this! Great times!!!
Me too. Hanging out with the gang back in the 70s. Thankfull that fb has connected many of us again.
I just found this channel 5/21 and i I am hooked! I am a senior who is addicted to great music! Love this song! More to come!
1982 has some amazing British records. My favouriite year.
you've gone down a big rabbit hole with 10CC bro.
They are one of the most inventive, clever bands of them all.
so many superb tracks to choose from with this excellent band.
and i have to say it again jay,its the 70's super-era.
♥️10CC♥️ sooo many memories. Things We Do For Love, another hit from them 💙
check out England Dan & John Ford Coley - " I'd Really Love to See you Tonight" and "NIghts are Forever"
Absolutely great song 👍
And "Love is the Answer"
@@robinqueen2311 My favorite by them.
Both beautiful, heartfelt songs, love them both. 🙂
Sad to Belong is another beautiful song from England Dan and JFC.
Slow dancing song.... oh the memories...💚💚💚💚
Always loved this song. Calm and soothing with angelic background vocals and instruments.
Try to listen the longer version. One of my favorite songs of all times. Like the very first time I heard this song, I still find it magic, dreamy, etereal... The guy is trying to deny at all costs he’s in love with someone. Those vocals are still amazing. And, yes, I do love the “Big Boys Don’t Cry” moment. Top of the night! 🌟😍
In high school always waited for this song to come on the radio.
Such a beautiful song, check out how it was made it incredible
Classic denial song, amazing how they made this song with overlapping voices. They have another song that is entirely different called 'dreadlock holiday' which is very catchy and then a really upbeat song called 'the things you do for love'
Love 70's music !!! My heyday...my teens !!!
There's a Doc. on here explaining how they recorded the voices..The backing vocals that you're hearing is only 3 voices, recorded on multiple tracks for each note of music over a 3 week period...Very creative for the time...The Doc. explains it much better than I can...Always loved this song, and I love it even more today, knowing the painstaking process they applied..Should see them do a recent live outdoor version, too...Fantastic!
Yeah well worth a watch to see the insane amount of work they put into the production of this.
So strange to finally put a face on the singer I loved so much as a teenager! Thanks, that brought back memories.
I remember when this came out in 1975 the background vocsls were so different like nothing I had heard before.
Jayvee, you're so sweet with your lovely smile and your happy disposition...
All the voices you hear are programmed into a synthesizer. The voices are notes on the keyboard, BRILLIANT!!
Jovaughn, a couple other 10cc recommendations are Dreadlock Holiday and The Things We Do For Love.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
but I don't like reggae!!!!!
@@jimcarlson6157 you probably also don't like cricket or Jamaica. Lol
@@KandKs_GGdon't mention the fine inhalables
@@jimcarlson6157 "Would you like something harder?"
Such a lush song. No. Was a woman who said Big Boys Dont Cry... Meaning he was about to cry or was crying because of his love for someone which he was fighting back. Such a classic love song. All the overdubs done one after another on tape. No fake voice boards. Am enjoying your channel. Glad to share our wonderful 1970s music. Have you been able to get any friends or family to listen who have never heard these?
It was their secretary singing "Big boys don't cry".....watch the mini documentary on the making if this song....amazing!
There is a longer version of this song that you need to listen to. This is a horribly edited radio version. By the way there is also a Documentary about this song because all of the voices had to be recorded individually at the time since it was 1970's technology which meant no computer/digital engineering back then....Great song still!
Cool. I'll have to check that out
Yes, the documentary on RUclips about the making of it is really interesting!
This song is soooooo much better than this edited version Lisa C ! :)
This IS a hugely EDITED version. What are you talking about. THe original is truly beautiful and MUCH longer....
One of the first groups I ever saw in concert!
I heard this song for the first time in decades today... instant time travel.
I still love this song so many many years later i was just 12 when it came out absolutely beautiful the feeling of loves euphoria with the sadness of it being unrequited.I dreamed one day i would see them live and I did a few years ago and they were just as good as ever.
This brings way back, wonderful memories. Great choice thank you 🙏♥️
His words said one things but his eyes told another story. We were young and thought it would never end. Album version is a must.
Just so you know-- he really IS in love. ;)
Your face in the middle! Priceless!!
You are on a roll today! Keep em coming!!
This song was the first song that we heard in Guardians of the Galaxy I think.
Good Morning Judge is my favourite of theirs. Or possibly I’m Mandy, Fly Me.
I was in the Army in 1975 and every time this came on the radio, the whole billet would get very quiet. It was like magic.
The most beautiful song for ever.
Written by the lead singer Eric Stewart. He was a member of the band, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders in the 60's. Memories flood back when hear the music of my youth.
You'd like "Dreadlock Holiday", it's not such a sappy love song.
I second that, and I think I’ll go listen to it right now! I don’t find I’m Not in Love sappy, though. Too beautiful, too real.
Yeah, great suggestion!
So soothing and relaxing. I never get tired of listening to 10 C.C. or this song. 😃
I havent heard this in years! Thanks!
One of the greatest songs ever composed. Check out the making of. Pretty amazing and innovative.
This is one that you NEED to be wearing headphones. This was actually the shorter radio version. The longer one is way cooler.
It is a woman saying “big boys don’t cry”. She was a secretary that worked at the studio.
Best feeling in the world to get lost in the song!! When talent was real!!! Yes!!!
It we're here... Champaign - How Bout Us... 11m views on youtube.. 1981 song, totally beautiful
Written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.
He's deeply in love but trying to deny it too much.....big boys don't cry......
I had years and years of Female friends , like at work, telling me I should cry which I,almost, never did so I DID one day..............and they told me I was GAY :)
This song is from my way back days and it's still holding it's own all these decades later. I had a transistor radio I carried around with me and I remember everytime this song came on I would stop what I was doing and just listen and dream about what I would be like when I really grew up. It had that mystical feel. Glad you enjoyed it! Now, you need to hear "The things we do for Love" by 10CC!
10CC were fixtures on the charts here in the UK through the 70's with such songs as The Things We Do For Love, Life Is A Minestrone, Rubber Bullets, Dreadlock Holiday, I'm Mandy Fly Me and many more. Nice to see you discover them.
The dub over with background vocals was dubbed over 626 times to get the sound effect. And it WAS A LADY saying "big boys don't cry".... it was their secretary for the band....they had no one else to ask, according to interview with the band.
One of my all time favorites. You did good J. Thanks. BTW, you were listening to the short version. There is a longer one available.
This one of those songs that gives you chills from beginning to end. Love it❣️
If you like this song, you might like "The things we do for love" that was another big hit they made back then, I was little but I remember
one of the few Goosebump giving songs
10CC. Brilliant! Enough said 😀
Jayvee, next 10cc song to react to "im mandy fly me" this in my opinion is their best song, simply CLASSIC😊
I agree it's their seminal track
Another blast from my past. Glad to see you appreciate the music I grew up with. Great reaction. 👍👍
Bodley and Creme were 10CC..they went on to produce and direct some of the greatest videos seen on MTV
The lead singer, Eric Stewart, was previously in a popular band called Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, who had a couple of hits.
There actually is a longer version of the song. Great song.
10cc were one of my wife’s favourite band’s. RIP to my beautiful wife xx
I HAVE BEEN DYING, 4u2 see this song, but much of my taste, is out voted, so I just hoped it would brought to your attn. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL SONG!!! Glad you were finally introduced to it!
I can’t believe I missed this post!!! I was so geeked and loved your reaction to it! I have loved this song from the very first time I heard it....🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽
Such an ethereal song. He loves her.
I'm so glad you reacted to this. I can't wait for the ad to be over. This song breaks my HEART. EVERY TIME.
Other 'denial' songs along similar themes are "What's Love Got to Do With It"(Tina Turner) and 'Missing You' (John Waite).
Don't forget " Come Along Please " by Bob Wallis and His Jazzmen
Your on a roll tonight great reaction to a good song
Always loved this song ❤️💗💙. They have another great one called The Things We Do For Love.
Remembering the good’ol days it’s beautiful 😍
One guitar, one piano, one keyboard and set of drums PLUS 53 sets of the bands overdubbed (is that the right word) vocals... and that is how you make a BRILLIANT song..!
Not quite right. They didn't overdub the voices. This song is a recording masterpiece, the first something like it was done. Each voice in the chorus is a separate recording of the band singing "aaah" at each note. Then looped. Then they played each voice/note/track on a separate channel on the audio board like playing a piano. Blown away
10cc..The things we do for love!! You'll love it!!
Huge hit for this band. One of the most unusual sounds!
10cc - so many great songs Dreadlock Holiday, Art For Arts Sake, The Things We Do for Love, Rubber Bullets, I'm Mandy Fly Me, The Dean and I, Wall Street Shuffle, Good Morning Judge. Life Is a Minestrone
That song is actually longer, There is a part of it missing from even the radio version, let alone the really long version. Look for the official studio version to hear the part that was cut out.
Godley & Cream were members of this group...and they had a cool tune in the 80's called CRY. Very reminiscent of this song.
" Big boys don't cry " always liked that part of the song, my growing time bands !! 😍💖👍
THIS SONG IS TOTALLY UNIQE! AND BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!
So happy you reacted to my favourite song of all time..still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it . Every song 10cc recorded is different, but most have a really clever play on words. I'm Mandy Fly Me and The Things We Do For Love to Dreadlock Holiday, all 10cc classics, and the band all sing great lead vocals on different songs. Love them
They are great live. Loved seeing them sing Dreadlock holiday.
Glad you are open to looking back at 10CC - from 1975. Great band!
