I never saw Frank as blaming anyone for his issues besides himself. That’s a huge piece of this album I think, he realizes his own self destructive behavior and patterns and is unsure of whether or not he can escape them. This is most evident on February 15th “the problem where all of this lies, I’m just an unstable crazy fucking guy” he knows it’s him who creates his problems and it’s the way he reacts. It’s friends and girlfriends alike that he keeps pushing away time and time again and he’s aware that this likely won’t be the last. “You know my new friends are starting to know Why my old ones don't talk to me anymore My ex knows why my last one's my last one Hey, guess why? It's all my stupid fucking actions” I want a dog comes down to the idea that even the perfect life will never be good enough something will always be missing. I did not expect an 8 from a guy who everyone was clowning on last year
He's made alot of progress, I still enjoyed his previous projects, but this has way more polish
I despised his first projects, but I was pleasantly surprised by his newest album, I personally gave it a 7/10
as someone who liked hobo johnson's earlier stuff, (and supported him through the clowning) this album was a hot steaming pile of shit and borderline unbearable to listen to.
Me and a group of friends who listen to new albums together were actually excited for this and it was the first time in 2019 we straight up just said "not even gonna finish this one" and watched netflix instead. I've even relistened to see if it was a bad first impression but wow it's just so cringy and everything is so surface level. and that's coming from a FAN. I watched the review and it's like Melon boy heard a different version or something cause this album was awful for me.

Personally I love Hobo Johnson and this album, but I can 100% understand why his sound is so polarizing. Everyone I’ve recommended him to has either hated him or loved him.

Ive always felt like it's not fair to trash on artists who are up front about their emotions. We all have a natural desire to be understood and to express ourselves. Anyone who pretends they haven't had many of the feelings Hobo Johnson expresses in his music (particularly when they were as young as him) is just trying to seem way more "put-together" than the vast majority of us are

I'm so surprised how many people hate this. I just listened for the first time, and I'm listening to this review after listening (I watched this review years ago, but didn't check out the album). It's just an honest portrayal of this depressed guy who wants love, but has growth to go. This was a really great, unique album

"Sorry, My Dear" was largely skipped in this review and isn't being talked about in the comments so here's my take. Also thanks to anyone who reads this I know the videos is 9 months old. I've been a fan of Hobo Johnson for about a year now and I can honestly say I feel like I know this man more than I know any other artist. I feel like he's my friend, like he would understand what goes through my head and like he would talk to me when I am sad. I think his ability to connect with an audience at such an extreme level is incredibly beautiful. As Melon said, he has left himself vulnerable as an artist by being so faithful to who he is in his music and I think that is what makes it so beautiful. Now, "Sorry, My Dear" is a ballad of the rawest feelings. It comes directly from the heart of Johnson as he address the personal repercussions he faces in regards to his romantic past. Johnson's music has always conveyed the hardships he has endured in his life from jail to drugs and being homeless; however this song, although pertinent to those portions of his life, is much more directly stemmed from within Johnson's own self. Before I go further, I will say this song feels incredibly personal to Johnson and I am not trying to tell him or anyone else what he feels, just my opinion on the meaning and depth to this song. Johnson has always faced hardships mentally, which may be the cause of the negatives paths his life has traveled down. These hardships have stolen the love from him and forced him to act outside of his true emotion. He was never able to truly learn what love is as seen through much of his music and his past relationships. However he has learned so much over his life and through his struggles that the emotion he missed out on has come back to teach him a lesson. He has been blessed by trauma as it now shows him what he missed, it now shows him how he will grow and learn. "Sorry, My Dear" is the culmination of a lifetime of latent emotion. It is a song of pure agony and pain as he calls to be heard by anyone who will listen. He wishes to share an apology but does not seek forgiveness as he lives with undying guilt of who he is. He feels a need to not exist, as he has been given a gift of life and feels as though he has wasted a beautiful opportunity. Johnson wants peace yet accepts the agony he faces. Never will he forget his actions and his past, but in the lowest moments of his life, he will always remember what it means to be alive. This song is an apology, not to another person but more so to himself, to life itself. If he doesn't "feel better in the next ten years, then, Then sorry, my dear". On his path towards contentment, he has left behind a wake of unapologetic agony fallen on deaf ears.

I cried listening to 'I Want A Dog'. To me, this song is about how we're in a generation that can't really have anything. The song starts out with some fairly reasonable requests (dog, house, family, community) then gets really wild with its requests (a child who's guitar prodigy, a wife who's a successful singer, a dog that can talk). You think "you're delusional, these requests are impossible. Be reasonable" but when he goes back and says "I just want a dog" you realize that for thousands of young people unable to afford a house and relying on renting a house/apartment they aren't allowed to have even a dog by their landlord; much less "a house on a hill on a street in a community with other people just like me".
I knew nothing about Hobo Johnson before. So seeing a notable dis/like ratio for a yellow flannel vid is interesting.

Knew that Melon liked Hobo Johnson and his stuff for a while now. And I'm so glad he actually reviewed this.
I say that this album has less of the "cringey" vocals than there were on his first album.
And I say that people that "hated" him before MAY see that Johnson isnt that bad if they listen to this. But there is tracks where people can say hes doing the same cringey stuff still.

I think it might be part the genre. mewithoutYou, Listener and La Dispute are all very polarizing, and I kinda see Hobo Johnson fitting into that realm.

I agree that he’s quite relatable, not just on heartbreak, but in the same way that Pat The Bunny is relatable. Just that completely raw realness, and like you said, the way he reflects a lot of the struggles that most people are dealing with these days.
I’m not going to pretend that I love every track he puts out. But the ones I do enjoy I think are pretty brilliant. I first discovered him through his Tiny Desk performance and the video for Romeo & Juliet, and pretty much everything from that period is fantastic. I haven’t listened to this whole album yet, because the couple of tracks I heard released off it before it came out weren’t totally for me... But he’s the real deal- he’s making his art the way he wants to make it, it’s all genuine, and if not all of it is for me, it’s just not. I have a lot of respect for the guy and he’s so young- I’m psyched to see what he’ll drop over the rest of his career.
Also, Jeffrey Lewis- these are the folks whose music isn’t about high fidelity, it isn’t about making everything melodic and traditionally poppy... It’s just one person pouring their insides out all over the place for us to take as it is. Either you enjoy it or you don’t, but nobody can claim he’s not an artist.

Paulo probably no more than remo drive he might boil to the top of his genre and be a favorite for a while but will fall back down by the time another album is out. He’ll still be liked but I don’t think he’ll break out of his own genre

He’s improved his sound, but like to a basic non-cringe level. Now it’s just like mediocre.
I wont personally relisten to this album (because it's framed SO American) but critically I have to say, it is pretty good. He actually does say quite a bit of substance (even though his accent is unbearable and I wanted him to stop YELLING a few times on the album). I think it comes down to how much tolerance you have for spoken word stuff and the really manic lyrics. But these elements dont make hobo's music inherently bad and you have to at least agree with that.

This is what Twenty One Pilots was trying to be.
Nah, very different vibes both lyrically and musically. I kinda see what you mean with awkward flows and wearing their hearts on their sleeves, but Hobo's instrumentals are much more skeletal and raw, more punk kinda. Also, Hobo's pursuit of love is a dominant topic in his lyrics while Tyler in a 10-year, 5-album span only wrote 2 songs about love (Tear In My Heart and Smithereens). Not to mention the fact that Tyler, while having a great sense of humor, rarely uses it in his poetry. Hobo, on the other hand, jokes and laughs histerically at his own jokes every other second on this album.
