    I'm firmly of the opinion that the theft of a wheelchair, walking cane, cane for visually impaired people, hearing aid, service animal, etc, should carry a mandatory prison sentence of 12 months at the absolute minimum, as in addition to theft it also includes an aspect of abusing the rights of a vulnerable human being who is less able to defend themselves. That would also make it a predatory act.

    • @Silverwing28
      @Silverwing28 7 месяцев назад +52

      I think a lot of these items would count as "Grand theft", due to the cost of these items. Idk what the prison sentence is for grand theft, but at least its something?

    • @brendanboomhour7606
      @brendanboomhour7606 7 месяцев назад +50

      Nah, make it 2-5 years minimum, cause all of those are extremely important to someone who's blind, deaf, etc. and someone deprived of those items could get hurt, or worse, without them

    • @Bubaiel
      @Bubaiel 7 месяцев назад +57

      I would go as far as to say that it should count as assault I mean really most disabled people think of those things as extensions of their own bodies

    • @tinydancer7426

      Excellent point. I know if someone put their hands on my cane, they would be receiving the handle end of it over their head if I was able to switch it around fast enough. You don't put your hands or me or my cane, which is an extension of my arm.

      OP should also inform her mother that stealing a wheelchair is actually a federal crime, because taking a medical device such as a wheelchair for example from a disabled person is a form of discrimination and potential harm and assault on a disabled person. The penalty of attacking a disabled person is a maximum of 10 years in prison.

    I worked at a fast food place where we charged for everything, a woman came in once with three kids and she seemed really stressed, her order for a salad and three taco meals came out to just under $30, I threw in sour cream, salsa, three brownies, and two sodas. The woman freaked at the $30 and asked for my manager. As soon as my manager came out she started yelling about the price, my manager looked at the whole order, asked why I didn't add everything else, I told her the mother looked like the was having a rough day so I was going to go without my free meal to cover what I didn't add up, the manager loudly told me to never put ungrateful jerks above myself and rang up everything I didn't which added another 10 and turned and stormed off. The woman paid the new total and never said another word. I got written up for not adding everything and never again gave up my meal to cover guest.

      Getting a meal for 4 people under 30 dollars would be a pleasant surprise for me. Makes me wonder if the ingrate uses this tactic at other places in order to garner sympathy discounts from more bootlicking types of managers.

      A long time ago I worked at a certain fast food place, run by a bunch of clowns ....
      We were told not to give stuff to friends or we'd be sacked for theft. So a few of us would get back at a couple of really crappy managers by giving stuff away to strangers. They always got more than ordered, rarely queried, we'd just "apologise" for getting their order wrong and ask them to keep the extra.

    Last story: It's not about the food.
    OP said he doesn't cover her car payments or gas, which means the girlfriend does have savings or an alternate source of income, otherwise the car would've been repossessed. Therefore, she can buy food for herself if she wants, and OP would've caught her buying extra food.
    Like in the lockbox story, this blatant disrespect of OP's boundaries is a power play. It's pretty obvious from her "let me live my life the way I want" rant at the end.
    OP doesn't need a lockbox or a fridge lock, he needs a new girlfriend, and to change the house locks.

      The county where my father lives in borders Oregon so oftentimes people from Oregon will flash their state ID so they don't pay sales tax. Recently the state government I believe stop allowing Oregon residents from being exempt from sales tax. In the county my father lives in is approximately 8.5 percent. I remembered years ago when I was helping my mom out at a vendor event in the northern part of the state where its higher and the residents would flash the ID and demand no sales tax. My mom lost out cause she had to pay sales tax when she purchased the items based on her county taxes and she is a small business owner.

    Delivery story: Not only are there semi and box truck delivery vehicles, let's not forget about those semi's that pick up and deliver a whole house's worth of goods when people move.
    Returns story: The dumb one was Debbie. Even had the coupon still been valid, what she spent on gas (or charging an EV) for a 3,000 round trip would have been a great deal more than what she "saved".
    Salad story: Proving to Karen she didn't want the manager after all? Priceless!
    Customs story: Customs agents are among the very last people in the world ANYWHERE that you want to play games with or piss off. They can LEGALLY hold you up for hours, search your person (up to and including strip searches), your baggage, and your vehicle including removal of panels or anything else that might hide a compartment filled with contraband. And ALL your paperwork had best be in order because they can and will go over it with a fine tooth comb.
    Wheelchair story: Mom is definitely out of line. Wrapping the injury and using a pair of crutches is more than adequate for an ACL injury. Well, that and staying off of it as much as possible. I'd be talking to dad as he (thru his insurance) paid for the wheelchair. I have no problem with OP having "hid" her wheelchair in the meantime. Mom can pony up the money for crutches.

Help her make a plan of action to find another job, and discuss it with her and let her know he will help her all he can to get another job. Then make meal plans to EAT WITH HER. Make these meals high in protein and low in simple sugars or processed foods. Protein helps to give energy and motivation. And yes, I mean UNPROCESSED MEAT protein. She has too much time on her hands and it is very likely allowing her to sit and think about her situation rather than do something about it. If she isn't willing to take the time and doesn't respond to trying to help her, then either deal with her eating problem (endorphins are created by eating btw. Especially by eating sugars. Very addictive), or give her an ultimatum and carry through.

    I’m an IT executive for a large hospital system. Unfortunately my back went out and I required surgery. It was worse than the doctor thought so I spent three weeks in the hospital. Since some of my IT staff worked in the hospital they visited me with Starbucks coffee from the main dining area. Not free but so much better than what the patients got. Six months after discharged myself and about nine of my staff walked through the floor that I stayed on. Every pretty nurse said hello to me and then commented that they bath me regularly. Boy my face turned red. Everyone one at the nursing station received Starbucks coupons from me. And the nursing manager received a few computer upgrades. This was in response to them telling my staff about me. Apparently my staff and wife were in on it. The nursing staff did take great care for me.

    When I needed a wheelchair after knee surgery I just asked on a neighborhood community board if anyone had one I could borrow for a month. I had multiple people offers within a day. You'd be surprised how many people have one lying around, either from an older family member who had since passed or in anticipation of a condition worsening. It's ridiculous to demand a person who actively uses their medical device to give it up to someone else, no matter how temporarily.

Thing is we LOVED it when someone tried to grab a wrist because as a mostly defensive martial art that's using other people's strength against them, any wrist grab ends up with the grabber on the ground in a flash, and depending on the force they can also be in considerable pain and stuck in a hold. 😊
    Even decades later when I hear "grabbed my wrist" I still reflexively think of the hand motions that would put someone on the ground.

    A few years ago I had to go to the hospital for surgery after being diagnosed with "intestinal malrotation, which caused me episodes of pain I can only describe as being like having molten razor blades in my stomach. So I wasn't in the most social of moods.
    Anyway, the nurses were ALL the most incredible, patient, professional people ever. And while I was in a lot of pre-and-post surgical pain, I made sure to always treat them as nicely as possible, since they were the ones looking after me, bringing me medication around the clock, changing my hookups, taking my vitals, all that stuff. And while I know it's their job to do all that, I also got a good look at the more uncooperative patients- and their families- they frequently had to deal with. It made me respect what they do that much more.
    After I got discharged, I made sure to send a thank-you card to the hospital, listing the part of the hospital I was in and putting down by name all the nurses I could recall - at least 10 - who had worked with me. I hope I made them feel at least a little more appreciated.

    I once answered a call about play yard equipment. The lady wanted to know if we sold any pre-assembled. Our smallest one was about 8 feet tall, 8 feet wide, and 20 feet long. I told her that we did not but that she could purchase the boxes of the unassembled equipment and call one of our assemblers to have it assembled at her house.
    But no. She demanded, not asked, that our assemblers put together the largest play yard we had and then deliver it to her house. After a second or 2 of dumbfounded jaw drop on my end, I replied, "Ma'am, this play yard you want to buy is 12 feet wide, 35 feet long, and (with the climbing wall set up) 15 feet tall. I don't know anyone that has a trailer to accomidate something that size. I'm also sure that transporting it down the major highway that our store is on would be ok with this happening without a load permit. I also doubt the road that you live on it is wide enough to transport it."
    She finally opted to buy the play yard and one of our kind assemblers delivered the boxes and assembled the play yard for her. But he said she watched him like he was some sort of criminal the entire time.

    My husband used to work in a cafeteria and the people that made the sandwiches were only supposed to use 3 oz of meat and they were supposed to weigh it one lady complained that she got cheated and claimed that there wasn't enough meat on her sandwich and when the boss came over and weighed it they saw that it was double what it was supposed to be and so they removed half of the meat and handed it to her and said well this is what you're supposed to have she was pissed.

    I find it odd that the hospital won't freely supply a pair of crutches for someone incapable of walking. Do they expect the step-sister to crawl out of the building? Doesn't excuse the mom's abhorrent behavior, though.

    Coupon discount aside, driving “all day” to save $2.50 in tax hardly covers the cost of gas, wear n tear on tires/vehicle let alone just time lost is utter moronic logic.

      If you have an electric car, maybe the price for power. But the wear and tear would be a concern.
      I would rather not spend my time though, I could be playing games with friends wether video or tabletop, coding my fangame or real game. Or working on my modules for dnd. All more valuable than 2.50
