Ever thought about trying Hyrox? Well I did last weekend in Glasgow and I thought I'd share the experience of my first time taking part, to give you an idea of what it's like.
Thanks to the Hyrox team and all the volunteers for making the event absolutely fantastic!

SUBSCRIBE 😊 Thanks to Sarah Holden for training me for this (check out Sarah Holden Fitness online). Have you tried Hyrox? Let me know!
This happened to show up on my RUclips feed and you were the judge for my walls balls! I don’t think I said it at the time but thank you so much, your encouragement really helped me over the line!
Ah hi Laurence! Thanks for watching and well done - hope you had a good race! 🎉👍
I think I was holding some sick in my mouth while watching this 😅 😐. Haha, well done mate what a fantastic achievement 👏. You really captured that even and atmosphere so well.
Thanks Stephen! Haha you and me both 😳 cheers
Absolutely brilliant mate! I came for the story but stayed for the thigh close ups 😂 You absolutely smashed that mate it really did look like a lot of fun. I really appreciate the insight into the events and you captured the atmosphere really well mate. Huge kudos to you for getting involved with supporting others at the event too mate. This world needs more people like you Mike! 😎🤘
Thanks Ben, that's really appreciated. It was a fun experience and I'll do it again for sure. Trail running is still my favourite though :) thanks for watching!
Great video! I’m doing my first Hyrox in London on Sunday (30th April). I’m 60 and I’ll be doing women’s open.
Thanks!! That’s awesome - good luck and enjoy! 💪🏼💪🏼
I just watched this and wondered if 'more mature' women could give it a go. How did you get on?
@@carenhojbjerg1465 they can. I was in London April 2023 competing in 40-44 age group and there were older competitors. Also noticed that when I was a volunteer. If you want to do it you should!
Great video, some very good tips and insights. Thank you
Did a homemade version today
8 x 1 km runs and all the exercises
Jesus it’s tough !
Nice video
Well done for doing that - I had a go at a test run on my own and it’s definitely harder without the other competitors there 👍🏼
Great stuff Mike, this was a really good insight into Hyrox. Didn't know much about the event before but looked like really good fun. And also pretty tough! Excellent job 👍
Thanks mate! It was great fun. It’s no South Downs Way, but it was fun in its unique way 😂 all the best
Fab video Mike and great achievement! Loved getting an insight into this event! Looks flippin tough but great fun too!
Thanks for watching Elena! I imagine Arc is several times harder, but it was fun to do something different! Back to running now for a bit though :) all the best
Amazing, well done! 🎉
Thanks for watching TJ 👍 all the very best
I'm going to be there in October for my first hyrox. I am taking part in women's doubles. Im 54 and picked up my first weights in April. Wish us luck.
Fantastic - good luck and I hope you have a great time!!
Very helpful video to help visualise the whole race for someone preparing for their first Hyrox. Thank you
You’re very welcome! Hope the races goes well!
Really interesting watch, Mike. It's put ideas in Dawn's head!
I'd love to see the Brooms smash Hyrox!
Great video. New to your content, really enjoying your videos
Thanks John, I hope this was helpful. All the best
“Cup of tea yeah”😂😂😂 love this well done
Thanks again for your support and the excellent coaching programme! 👍💪🏼
Good effort Mike! I’ve had my eye on Hyrox workouts for a while.. I’ll definitely try it out now.. looked painful fun 😂
I can't recommend it enough. It's all about the running, lunges and squats in my opinion! Thanks for watching John!
That looked HARD, fair play Mike! These events are insane with the amount of exercises in one session. Would defo be out of my comfort zone. Still enough energy left over afterwards to smash out a 100 miler I bet! 😅 Hope you recovered well 🙏
Thanks Craig! I think if you have the running element down, the rest of the exercises you can just pace through. It was great fun! Hope your running year is going well bud
Awesome video dude! Got my first hyrax in march and I’m really nervous and your video has made me feel better for it! Many thanks 👍🏻
Ah that’s great to hear! Good luck with it - don’t worry it’s good fun 💪
Brilliant video Mike. It was probably the most in-depth video I’ve seen of actually everything involved. I can see exactly how it would be really popular. It just puts a new spin on fitness challenges and takes in strength as well as cardio. Bit like an indoor Tough Mudder. If time and other commitments weren’t a constraint I’d definitely be up for training for one and giving it a bash.
Well done on completing your first Hyrox Mike 😁… and I would have felt exactly the same walking into a big event like that.
Thanks Rachel! Yes indoor tough mudder is a good comparison actually. It really is great fun 👍🏼 maybe one day you could try one in crocs?? 😂
@@30somethingmike - don’t put ideas in my head, I’ve enough stupid ones already 🤣
Very good Mike … well done. I have great admiration but I also have watched the Mark Lewis vids too and nothing as yet tempts me to follow in either of your Hyrox footsteps 😂
haha thanks Michael. Mark has done it better but I thought I'd share my experience too. Thanks for watching and all the best!
Such a good video! Doing my first Hyrox in Glasgow next sat and cacking it 😆 had said I’d be pleased with sub 90 mins… now I’m thinking sub 2 hours!!
Good luck! Don’t worry it’s genuinely great fun 🙌 glad you enjoyed the video. All the best!
Well done
Very interesting concept. I was watching it with my son, he was keen on trying it. This type of thing is not for me personally because I get a bit claustrophobic with so many people indoor and I don't like weights, my womb would probably fall out. My son is 18 at the end of August. I will look it up for him and some friends. I like it how detailed your video is. Thank you, Mike.
Thanks Olga - it’s really great although it is pretty noisy and claustrophobic if you’re used to outdoors running trail races. I’d definitely recommend it to your son if he likes high intensity workouts and weights 💪🏼 all the best
Your wall ball judge was Wanda and she doesn't give those hugs out lightly 😂
Oh wow I’m honoured! She was excellent!
That looked suitably tough but you smashed it mate. Well done! The video came out brilliantly, as always. Not enough thigh though. Maybe have a dedicated thigh cam next time 😁👍🏻
Haha thanks Mark. I'll save that for another video! Cheers and all the best
Loved this! My brother does CrossFit and I’m in awe of what they do, but it always seemed out of reach for me. This looks slightly more achievable but maybe you just made it look easy! 💪🏼. Do you train at a gym that has a Hyrox setup? I don’t go to the gym so need to work out how to train some of the exercises. I’d love to give it a go and may well see you in B’ham in October. 🤪
Hi Francois - thanks very much! I would say this is more accessible than CrossFit, as the movements aren't very technical. I just trained at my local PureGym but the training programme I had through the trainerize app with Sarah Holden Fitness was brilliant. Essentially, Hyrox is lots of running, lunges, squats and burpees. The only thing you really need to practice in the gym is the ergs (row & ski) and push/pull a sled. Definitely give it a go! All the best
Thanks for this video! I’m doing my first hyrox in 2 weeks! This was a great way to see what’s going on. Did you film this using a chest strap GoPro?
Thanks Ferguson and good luck! It’s great fun 👍 yes I used a chest mount and a 360 camera. Apart from the burpees (took it off) and all the thigh shots on the rowing machine it was fine 😃
Very interesting although it got my bad back complaining to me for just watching it!! 🙂
😂 I haven’t ached like that for a while that’s for sure
Great run and video lad.
Problem i have with hyrox is that you dont get anything if you win.....won mixed doubles with my partner last weekend and all you get is a cheap tacky flag
Thanks and congratulations on the win! You must have been absolutely smashing it! Haha yes that tea towel does seem like a bit of a wooden spoon prize, although to be able to flex that when you’re drying the dishes would be pretty awesome 🙌
#GameforanythingMike , good job mr all rounder. As a former Spartan racer (who is transforming into a happy jogger) , I would say to attempt to run ultra's and compete regularly in Hydrox would provide you with a high /very high level of standard fitness.. That being said the two sports contradict physical needs at some point and you would suffer with having too much weight due to required upper body strength and high salt /glycogen needs on the ultra's.. or tire out due to lack of strength and lactate tolerances at Hydrox or similiar event. I must say It's great being able to be an arm chair general and just watch you peeps play 😜
Thanks John, I've definitely been tempted to try Spartan Race too one day. I agree with you on the focus, albeit Hyrox seems to be mostly lower body strength based so I found a lot of the training was similar to strength training that we might normally do to support running. It was a lot of fun and I'd definitely recommend it. Thanks for watching JBS!
Out of curiosity, could you post your 'standard' (strict) times on the ski erg and rower, and compare them to the time you managed at Hyrox (which, as you mentioned includes being in the station, and not just doing the exercise)!??
I row at about 1:55 / 500m pace when rowing easy-ish (rate 22). In the race though I took it slow to rest on the rower, so about 2:10 pace (4:20 for the km). It’s a good station to rest if your technique can get you a decent pace.
Ski erg I did in about 4 minutes but it’s earlier in the competition so you generally feel fresh
Hope that’s helpful!
@@30somethingmike yeah, that’s well beyond what I can currently do on the rower.
Thanks for your reply!’
hey what did you use to attach the go pro to your body? and did it make the race more difficult?
Hi Matthew. I used a body Mount from GoPro. I had thought about using a shoulder Mount but it wobbles around all over the place. It definitely made it more difficult but I figured my first race wouldn’t be very quick so no hassle 😂 next time I’ll be racing for time
Thanks for your reply, I am thinking of wearing one for the barcelona hyrox next week. Did you use the super wide lens? and what did you use to edit the video? thanks !
@@matthew4549 I used a 360 camera so it was a bit easier to stabilise. But super wide on the hero should be fine I reckon. Good luck!
Is 1hr 26 mins ok first time 47
That’s great! Better than me 😂 I think the average finish time in open waves is 1:30. Nice one
@@30somethingmike was just wondering I just tryed it if my on back
