    It makes me so happy when I see a new up load from you Doug and Pat. Nice to know that your still around and kicking. Wow all the pick-ups sounded great and I could tell by how Doug was playing the he was enjoying them very much. To my ears the Amber's we're just a touch better to me but they all sounded impressive. Hope you do that Tele part 2 you talked about and even though they are inferior to Gibson (just kidding) maybe a strat part 1 would be great.

    I Have a set of the amber spirit of 59 pick ups, they are in a recent Les Paul I bought from Greg's Guitars in Germany, was very pleased to see this episode as I've watched all the shows and already knew they hadn't had the Doug and Pat test run, they really are amazing sounding pick ups .. and glad they liked em best .. so glad whoever owned the guitar replaced the originals with amber 59's .. recommended .. thanks Doug and Pat .. greetings from N. Ireland .. 🎸🔊🎵👍

      These are the alnico V magnet model too...they are now available with alnico 4 which gives a richer bottom end which is basically Oscar. Very impressed with these. Nothing on this channels came close in my opinion.

    For my ears the Amber 59’s sounded very close to Oscar. The other pickups were close but not close enough 😊. I liked the post show interview it was very informative and the German concept of good design backed with building it right was brilliant. Thanks Doug and Pat for another great show. Ken Australia

    Wow great sounding pickups, all of them! I thought the Ambers had a little something extra, so hard to tell, though. As for the one who shall remain nameless, I guess he's forgotten his humble beginnings and is just too fancy to hang with us "commoners". ;) A dirty shame, too, because it would be great to see him here. Oh well, Doug's playing is just fine with me! Thanks again! Happy Thanksgiving, all!

    I think it would be interesting not only to see the resistance value of the pickups, but also an impedance graph. Because the impedance is the resistance over the frequency spectrum this would be much more meaningful and could visualize the sound character of the pickup much better than a single resistance value. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland (Regards from Germany)

    Pretty good comparison! I've played all these pickups in person and all of them are good PAF's, the häussels are very bright and can be pretty thin and fizzy sounding in many guitars, the Ambers are the exact opposite, very compressed and juicy. Kloppmanns are kind of a happy medium and probably fit most guitars quite well... There are many other great German pickup winders that make PAF's that are as good as in the comparison, e.g. Area59, David Barfuss, Leosounds, Midgeyard,...

    How do you find the correct pickup height?

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  5 лет назад +3

      We use the same height with all the demos on all the pickups which is holding the strings down at the end of the neck closest to the bridge and leaving a little less that 1/8th space for the bridge pickup and a little more for the neck pickup. In real life you should experiment with your pickup height with your own amp and find the "sweet spot" for you. D&P

    I play the Amber '59 in a couple of Gibsons and Maybach-guitars. Their sound is fat and juicy with a lot of "transparency". You can also hear a very little twang tendency when they're played clean - that helps the fat LP to cut better through a mix. Best choice of PAF replicas by far. Not to mention their P90-models... great!

    Amazing tone that you get out of that Vox. I actually thought the the last Pups were really sweet and had a heavier bottom end and came very close as far as duplicating the sound of the O.G. That said, I actually did prefer the Amber and I just wanted to say that with the leather jackets you guys look like maybe you could moonlight as a Ramones tribute band on weekends ? No ?..... Are you fellers in PDX ? 2nd time viewer and now subscribed. Last time(1st time) I saw the show was about 1957 Les Paul Jr.'s one of my favorite Guitars ever. We used to get them out of a local rag called the Recycler here in So.CA.in Excellent Cond. for 500.00-600.00 Bucks in around 79-'80. Crazy huh. The old pawn shops in Vancouver had some doozies also on Main St.? around '79-80 when I came back up to my moms and we moved to Camas,WA.I actually lived my Jr.High and Sophomore years up there in Kelso,WA and Camas,then came up as an adult in '82-83 I believe. Shit, I'm losing my memory and don't care anymore. What was I talking about...

    Hi guys, To my ear, nothing comes even close to Oscar (apart maybe Gib's CustomBuckers or SD's Antiquities). I've had Ambers on a Collings City Limits and wasn't convinced. To me, they were too high output. Regarding German PU's, you should give a look at LEOSOUND pickups. They have a "Vintage Player PAF" that has a good reputation. Greg Hilden, the guitar dealer/musician seems to like them. Also, they are not THAT expensive (abt. 200 € a set). My favorite remains the Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck and SH-2B in the bridge (not the hot rod set with an SH-4 - much too harsh). Thanks for all your vids and good luck for the show. I dig it !! \m/

      This is one of the things we love about doing our little show is to get this exchange of ideas, experiences and preferences from players who are serious about it so thanks for that. For ourselves, we are reacting to what we hear in our little studio comparing sounds to Oscar the Beast and yeah, this guitar is going to be hard to beat and we don't know why. That said, in our space through our amps the Amber in this case has serious harmonic overtones that we aren't getting from other great sounding PAF clones and that's why we mention it. Everyone should be aware (as we discussed in our "Where Does Tone Come From" show that your tastes, choice of amp and pedals if you use them are all factors too. There is no arguing with what one's favorite color is and the same is true for tone, we all get to choose. D&P

      @DFraserHomes  5 лет назад

      We always set the pickup height the same for all pickup demos which is, while holding the strings down at the end of the neck by the neck pickup we adjust the bridge pickup a shade less than 1/8th inch from the strings and the neck a bit more than 1/4 inch. For real life we suggest experimentation depending on your amp etc. Where we adjust them for demos is where we leave them for real life. D&P

He describes his two 58 Flying V's (we know, gag) as one sounding sweeter like a Les Paul and the other one being louder and brighter and in his words more aggressive. That's how we feel about these two pickups, at least through our amps in our studio. The Antiquity is sweet and the Amber is brighter with more "scream" I guess you would say. Is one better than the other? Of course not, that's up to the player, their taste in tone combined with what amp they play through and their own playing technique. Hope that helps. D&P

      The Doug and Pat Show
      Yavult! Thank you, that’s why I asked. In the tube I hear the ant’s as having a bright top three strings, And the Amber having a bassier crossover underlying the strings and I hear the steely attack floating around the upper register.
      In other WORDS haha, it sounds as if the 59 has a beefier sound

    They all sound good. Is the guitar straight into the amp? sounds killer.

      We plug straight into the amp, never use pedals for pickup demos. D&P

    are you guys posting these on the "Chasing Oscar" page!? so far, RCs are my number 1 out of the PAF clones, with ThroBak A2s number 2, really want to compare those to the Amber PAFs

      Hi Charles. When you say “RC” do you mean Rob Conley’s? That makes me wince. I ordered and paid for a set of his Bloodline ‘59s a year and a half ago. I believe he had some health problems but he assured me multiple times that the pickups would be coming soon. He has stopped responding to emails altogether now but the website is still active. No updates on the Facebook page for a year though. I fear either his health problems have got the better of him or his workload has overwhelmed him. Very sad. Also sad for me as I was very keen to hear those pickups. He wound me some Tele pickups that I think are fantastic. They were what prompted me to order the Bloodlines. Of course...you may be referring to a different “RC”...

    Heres a question Id really like to know the answer to. A brand new 1958 les paul in 1958....How much different did they sound then compared to a 1958 now? Also a brand new 1958 original back then vs a brand new 58 Reissue now? Will an R8 sound like a burst 50 years time? How much of the magic is the affect of time on these guitars? This cant be objectively answered but Id like an opinion from somebody who has experience of both 🤔

      aasou the use of sunburst Les Pauls was in the 60s and 70s when the guitars were only 5 to 10 years old. The difference in those old guitars is mostly the old-growth woods used, and the non-mass produced craftsmanship of the builders. Newer guitars will never be quite the same as those, but I think we have more and better PAFs then we did back then. Check out Throbak pickups, or Sheptone for instance.

    All I can say is that because the amp is beyond phenomenal, it kind of makes it all irrelevant. This particular amp is 95% of the tone we hear in this video.

      Its only an old vox ac10. I dont think it's a big deal. Just not my favourite, when they used the old fenders that was great
