    I thought the 2006 with stock pickups sounded alright, but once you started playing the 58 I noticed that the guitar has more sustain, more dynamics, better transients and does not compress as much. There is better note separation too. The pickups play a big part in the tone, but a guitar is a "system", everything has to align properly in order to create a killer axe. That Vox is also part of the system. The combination is awesome.

      I have no issues with Burstbuckers and think they sound fantastic, IF the guitar it's in already has a nice, resonant sound, it's set up properly and the player and amp aren't garbage. That said, Tom Doyle hit the nail on the head that creating a pickup is all about the end result: THE SOUND. Which is why companies like DiMarzio are popular with people who do not require "perfect vintage replicas" but want a particular sound, even if the pickup is 17k and has a brass baseplate and an undersized magnet disigned to not touch the poles, like their "Airbuckers". One of my favorite humbuckers is the "Air Zone" which is more than double the resistance of a PAF but still has a fantastic dynamic range but can push an amp hard if you pick hard. It's all about SOUND and FEEL, not specs.

      Gibson stopped using brass posts and thumbwheels on their "ABR1" bridges and went to steel at some point. As strange as it seems, it matters. They also were using cheap zinc tail pieces as well. So upgrading those two things actually can make a difference in terms of tone.

      @@srh361 Oh sure, for example please watch
      I Made A Mistake Buying A Gibson Custom Shop R0 Guitar on Philip McKnight's channel
      1) Custom Shop Guitar cost him around $7000
      2) Upon onboxing, the silver volume cap was missing on one of the knobs.
      3) There was a 1" scratch UNDER the clearcoat in the finish. Viewing a full guitar shot of the back, the scratch in the neck is clearly visible. That is how brazenly bad QC at Gibson is.
      4) The fretboard edges wasnt rolled/rounded, and the frets ate into his hands.
      5) The action was high and because of the seemingly too-low neck angle and slightly higher pickup rings, The action could not be lowered. He mentions it was barely playable.
      THIS is for $7000 Custom Shop guitar NEW.

    I suck at Sheetrock/spackling, so I threw a quilt up on the wall. I never met Les Paul, but my Dad brought me to see him play at the Iridium in Manhattan. Tom Doyle rebuilt my Jackson Dinky, when I was in high school. I grew up with his son. So cool going in his shop. He had Les Paul's original 8 track in the corner.

    Just an idea for your A-B tests: While I realize that the show is about capturing that vintage tone could you guys play these rigs through more everyday amplifiers (Fender Hot Rod Deville and the like) and then A-B them against the vintage amps like your AC10, etc.? I get that you're typically trying to isolate for one or two specific variables but most people aren't playing through 50 year-old amplifiers and I think it would be eye-opening to hear how pickups like these Tru-Clones sounded through a more common amp. Just my .02. Love the show guys.

    I have a pair of early Tom Doyle 'rails' humbuckers in a guitar. The controls and wiring harness (volume, tone, and a rotary pickup selector switch) are all Doyle-made. No idea what year these are from; the coils are encased in a plastic box a la EMG and have 'T. W. Doyle' heat stamped between the blades.

    My friend (now 80 yrs old), purchased the very 'Mary Ford' Les Paul Model used, from Manny's Music Store on 48th St in NYC in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Prior to him selling it to a famous guitar dealer in NYC, only he and a few close friends were aware of its existence. Once it surfaced I am told Gibson borrowed and copied it for a limited edition. As far as I know, there was no official 'Mary Ford' designation, yet that is how it was referred to even way back when.

    hello again, i thought it was interesting that how high the moon was recorded in the first week of jan.1951 the les paul guitar was debuted at the namm show in june 1952 evidently it went through a lot of prototypes to arrive at the 1952 gold top.
    les paul was playing and changing the instrument until the release in june 1952.

    • @TomDoyleLP
      @TomDoyleLP 7 лет назад +1

      Les used his #1 “Clunker,” to record “How High The Moon” and all other Les Paul and Mary Ford hits (36 hits in total) from the late 1940s and early ’50s… and NOT a Gibson Les Paul guitar. Les had told Gibson that he would play his clunkers until Gibson came up with a guitar that sounded better. Gibson did ultimately produce its first solid body, which did rival the sound of the clunker. In the 1940s, Gibson even offered Les any guitar he wanted - including a gold plated L-5, but Les wanted a great-sounding solid body, and Gibson refused to give him one. Then in 1952 Gibson and Les Paul were finally able to agree on what would then become the solid body Gold Top that Les would endorse and put his name on. So in short, those songs were not recorded in any way whatsoever with what we now know as a Gibson Les Paul guitar… Gold Top or otherwise.

    • @markcooper9063
      @markcooper9063 7 лет назад

      how high the moon was recorded in, jan1951 the guitar is a solid body les paul type guitar (in the film)but modified ,but a solid body none the less,so evidently gibson gave in and les used a solid body guitar as you stated.

    Just a passing note Why would Gibson make a 1958 Gold top? 1958 first year of the Burst

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  7 лет назад +1

      Good question. It's because the changes done to Gibson guitars were not like cars, there were no model years as such so the humbuckings showed up sometime in 1957 and the sunburst finish later in 1958 so there are both gold tops and sunburst Les Pauls in 1958. A cool web site is Burstserial (dotcom) which shows LP's by serial number with pictures so that you can see the chronological progression of the finish change. D&P

    Great show as always. A question first. What are your thoughts/opinions on treble bleed circuits on humbucker pickups. I installed a wiring harness with the bleed (resistor and cap) circuit on my Heritage H555, along with a new SD Antiquity Neck pick up. I'm not convinced that I did the right thing with the treble bleed. Does it effect the overall tone more than just retaining the highs when at lower volume?
    Now my comment; I find it ironic the you guys host the "Doug and Pat Show".....and your names are Doug and Pat, what are the odds?

    Hi great to see you again. Now tone can be a pretty subjective thing. When you played the R7 I thought it sounded great with the Burstbuckers. So when you plugged in Oscar I thought "well here we go" usually it's like night and day when you do this but it was not. I think a culture has grown up where spending lots on pickups, and I am guilty of this too, is the answer to your tone problems when a lot of the time it probably is not. I thought the Burstbuckers had a tad more midrange. OK sorry, don't ban me!

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  7 лет назад

      So correct-sound IS subjective so there is no wrong answer. When we were talking to Bonamassa he said that the difference between a good sound and a great sound is only about 5% and he wants that extra 5%. If we could pick a spot with the Doyles demo that we hear the 5% it would be the high note flurry starting at 38:30 and ending with the sustained note at 38:36 that starts to change tone and for the better. The stock R7 could not do that from what we heard. That's the difference that makes Doug want to play for an hour. D&P

    • @content-appreciator
      @content-appreciator 7 лет назад +2

      Tim Lilly In my experience it takes time, hours of listening, to catch slight differences in tone. Of course youtube, the video/audio compression, doesn't help. I know it's silly, but that's why tone "snobs" are rarely below a certain age. Disclaimer: I don't mean snobs in a bad way. It's just easier to type than connossieurs (not even sure I spelled it right).

      So I've finally got home and have watched this on the big screen with the Bose sound system. Yes, the reissue Goldtop seems to run out of puff further up the neck with the Burstbuckers. But also if it's 5% different is that worth the price tag for an original?

    • @glennevans5824
      @glennevans5824 7 лет назад

      Agree seems every nuance is debatable now.I think a lot of the tone is generated as you know by a great tube amp.Lots of boutique amps today....it’s almost overkill with how many products you can choose from and who makes the closest to a “real PAF”.....so many variables.Just plug in a good Les Paul into a good tube amp.I know from personal experience in a band mix a lot of micro analyzing goes out the window.

    Way to much compression with the stock harness. Much better with Doyle wiring harness.

    Gee, how about a mention for loaning you that first set last year that you used in a show(?). Guess not eh...
    Great show and comparison between Oscar and that R-7! The Doyle's were a big improvement. What pickups were stock on the R-7? Burstbuckers or Custombuckers? Sounded more like "Shitebuckers".....yuck, yuck...

      Yeah about that Don...we feel kind of bad but then we got to talking and now we're wondering what else you might have around your house we could use. And we'd mention you and everything. D&P

    Enjoyable video for sure but to actually compare you would have to try all the components being tested in ONE guitar otherwise it's kinda pointless xcept for entertainment value, plus utube kinda makes everything sound the same. Your 58 is a great guitar but there is no PAF tone as there were so many variables in those old pickups. Not trying to depress everyone but it drives me nut's when I see a PAF "clone" pickup. Do like your show tho, wife noticed that you also smoke a pipe, so when I do a video I'm not copying you. Maybe I started first?
