Don’t cheap out on the designer. Good advice. An experienced designer knows SO much more beside how to make thinks look nice. We can help you avoid pitfalls, work with a printer, make recommendations on the final product and save you a ton of headaches.
This is a great insight into this process. I'm starting a photo project that I was thinking could lead to making a book and this really makes me think about the ins and outs of self production. Can't wait for your kickstarter and to get a copy.
I think you are misunderstanding the run on cost, I work in a commercial printing company and the run on is so you can work out additional quantities that are not covered in the qty’s quoted i.e 1100 copies or 1200 and so on. I doubt it’s the cost of overs.
Great video as usual. What makes this so good is that you put out important information we can't get anywhere else. Looking forward to this launching on kickstartet.
Man Jared!!!! You just continue to level up & level up!!! Let the haters hate!!! This is a huge next step for your photography!! This is killer great news
Mazel Tov on your self publishing venture!! I wish you all the best. However, as the owner of a US printing company, I am not thrilled that you outsourcing work that can be produced by many capable companies here in the United States. Seeing this is your Bernie book, I am wondering how Bernie feels about you using an Italian company.
Dear Jared Thank you so very much for doing this for many reasons : 1- Bernie Sanders is my favorite American human / politician in the 21st century. 2- I'm a photographer from Djibouti and I have being following your channel for the last 3 years and I learned a lot through out your videos. 3- I love photo books and learn a lot from them vs screen view: Papers quality, the choice of color vs B&W, the commentaries of course and the layout designs of photo books. Many other reasons that It will take quite a while to mention.. This is going to be a successful project based on Passion and transparency from the start, I Know it will go big and 10 k are going to be all around the world within the first 5 years maximum - with Berni's story and your name on the book. 60 USD is a good price and I would really appropriate it if you keep it on that as for the first 2,000 copies and maybe go to 50 if all goes well and you got over 10,000 supporters on the kick starter campaign to be accessible to people from all over the world, and hopefully soon to international public libraries as well' I know a lot of people in my age who wanted Bernie to win both 2016 and 2020 election'. I did signed up to the website and looking forward for this project to start so I can be the first to participate 'at least the first from Djibouti' Thank you again to you and to your wonderful team on the channel.
Your honesty and transparency is admirable, Jared. While I don't care about politicians nor the plot of the book itself, given the fact that you have been so open about this and it seems really important to you, I actually got excited for this project. I'm down with everything about it, especially the fact that it'll get printed in Italy. I mean, even the profits aspect of it is exciting to me. Print more, earn more profit, because the price per unit goes down considerably. It all makes sense, spending more initially but saving money at the same time AND earning more at the end. There's a big chance that I might buy it just to support your vision. Never done a Kickstarter before, so this being my first time would be so cool. I just signed up on the website. I'm down for supporting something that has so much passion behind it even if I don't care about the subject of it.
Thanks for showing the business side of things. These prices are pretty decent, but can you move that many books? These things will hopefully not take too much time to sell. Don't forget storage fees will need to be applied if you can't keep the pallets at your place. Customs fees and transportation fees of the books should also be added to the price.
I don’t live in US, so I don’t care about politics in that country. However I would love if you “self publish” a book that is not about a politician. I mean the market of that book is mostly for people who knows Bernie, and that is only a specific group of people in US. You will get a lot more clients if the book is of other, more universal and less controversial topic. Lastly, if you want to be transparent, you need to maybe explain your financial relationship with the politician, and maybe his payment to you to make the pictures and book? Isn’t that a part of your profit that potencial buyers will want to know? I would expect Bernie to self founding the book himself and hire you to do the pictures and handling the printing. He is the main character, is his book, you just the photographer of his book. Somehow this feel like using your followers to sell more of a politician’s book. It just feel weird. For more you try to make it look like a photography book, for me is more like I follow you for years, I want to benefit you, instead I will benefit a politician that I don’t even know. Again it is not your book, you asking for support for another person book, a politician book, in a channel that is about photography, not about politics. Bernie doesn’t have 65.000 and need to go Kickstarter to founding his own book?? I don’t get it.
Not sure about that. I have photography books about subjects I have no interest in because of the photographer who made the photographs. Jared will be selling to two audiences (with some overlap) - his fans (who watch this channel, many of whom won't care about the subject matter - they're fans of the photographer) and Bernie Bros.
10:18 H&T's are Heads and Tails.... it's the string that is in the binding to keep bugs out of the binding and eating the glue... you usually can get H&T's in different colors, but usually people just pick black or white...
oh.... and if you get it delivered to the garage... pay extra for "liftgate delivery" then they bring it on a semi-truck or straight truck and the driver will be able to unload it to the ground without having to unwrap all the pallets and you can just push them in the garage still wrapped...
great to see you doing this just wondering - did you need permission from Bernie to create this book or what photos you can print? or what kind of deal in general where you get access to follow him as a photographer and be your own editor for which photos are good? Just wondering since maybe im not sure, that there would be other people looking through the work and curating what can and can not be posted?
Nice job of describing how to go about self publishing you photo book. Love your photojournalism it always looks great. Not a fan of Bernie but loved the photos and your video showing the sessions. Plan on buying one for my Nephew who is a big Bernie fan...maybe one for myself (because of the Author/Photographer). Thanks for all your work...
I did one a few years ago...wow it was a lot of work...We had to do a lot to get it done but the main problem after the YEARS of work was the selling of the book ...I wouldn't want to repeat this adventure. Printed in the far East rather than Italy which was a little more expensive...the price per book was about the same as yours...But I did most of the behind the scenes work with about 4 companies helping me.
This was super helpful Jared! I will definitely support your book. The part of color correcting I was a little confused. Wouldn't you want to edit the photos yourself and send them a final high res jpg version in Adobe 1998 color? Don't you want to do the sharpening as well yourself? Just curious about that. Everything else made sense and was very helpful. Looking forward to hearing more about this project (and I'm not into politics but love your enthusiasm and info you're providing)!
I want to create an art book. I have about 8 paintings more or less. And have written down all the concepts behind the paintings, but now I'm stuck trying to figure out how I'm hoping to get the paintings to images and layout of the book.
the second cover looks awesome, its an amazing story and even though i cant buy it i will definitely listen to the podcast. you have taught me a lot about photography. I love your content.
So I'm in the process of self publishing a coffee table book, but don't need as many edition or pages. Do you have any resources for something smaller scale? I'm trying to do maybe 500 first editions on the top end. Anyways, I appreciate you making a video about this. Thanks and happy Hanukkah.
Great video, very insightful! Have you thought about a QR code with each image in the back of the book that would link you to one of your videos that talks about the image?
@@froknowsphoto that sounds like a much better idea! I was trying to think of something that would bring you to your RUclips for the non RUclips followers buying the book. Excited for it to come to fruition.
quite interesting and exciting. the lower costs show us marginal cost and economy of scale in action not to mention good old fashioned supply and demand. did you actively seek out a US or Canada-based printer so as to minimize shipping? or is this a classic case of quality at a higher cost being better than lower cost with lower quality? You're giving a real world demonstration of both Adam Smith's and David Ricardo's ideas: division of labor and comparative advantage. Way to go analog in our suffocating digital world.
Love the idea & will support. I just think the book should be made in American. In a union shop. That’s what Bernie would do. Also buying a Bernie book on Amazon don’t sound right.
True on the Amazon part but I’ll still put it there so people can access it. The union shop thing we def considered, but the type of bringing and binding I wanted to do, is done really well at ebs.
When factoring in the shipping from Italy to the U.S,, isn't there a company in the states that could produce the book as cost efficient or even more so than having it printed overseas? Obviously quality of the final product should be taken into consideration, but I gotta believe there are companies here that could meet the aforementioned criteria.
First Kickstarter I backed was a photo book by JEREMY KORESKI a Canadian photographer from Tonfilm, British Columbia, called ‘This is Nowhere’. It’s a great way to get a product to market.
In the shipping is included the custom fees? I'm use to the opposite way (US to Italy) and the custom fees is equal to ~25% of the cost of the shipped item including shipping (as a private, not as a business)
You might want to look into the story of Brian Schul and his book Sled Driver. Which appears to be the collectible. He is a retired Air Force pilot who is known for his time of flying the SR-71 Blackbird. His love of photography allowed him to collect one of the world’s rarest collections of the black jet. His lectures on his career, overcoming being shot down and badly burned to once again flying one of world’s most advanced jets for its time.
Good luck with book Jared!! If you publish a book about your photographic history, I will definitely buy it. But a book just about Bernie, is not so interesting for me as a viewer from Europe. Still I think you will have no problem at all, selling those 2000 books!!
All high end photography books like Steidl for example, have sewn binding. That’s why most POD photography books, except Milk Books are junk since they use adhesive (glue)binding.
Very interesting video. I was astonished to see that the kickstarter only got about 483 backers given the size of your following and the size of the Bernie-sphere.
I wonder if other photographers put as much thought, heart and soul into their photobooks or they just throw them together for nothing more than a financial gain? either way, I'm excited to get my hands on this photobook when it's released!
Is still a risk. I think the cover image is very important... inviting, friendly... this what people see the first.... I wish you to sell as much as you can, you deserve it...even when it turns out different you may inspired other to do a book from them. .... and they may will help you with finance. I cross the finger for you ... a great start.... Sorry, my English is not my first language... I hope you understand.. By the way a honest video.... love it.... You have all my respect..!
does this company do one-offs? I'd like to make a coffee table photo book of my work for myself/for my parents. only like 50-100 pages, and id pay $300 for it.
I hate politics, and am not the biggest fan of Bernie, however after listening to him on Joe Rogan I got a newfound respect for him. It was nice that he was actually able to sit down and talk with someone who actually let him talk. I will be buying this book for the coffee table.
Very nice video and really interesting. And this said from a both your an Bernie fan in Italy. So I liked the information (I wish I could self publish a book with my photographs someday) I liked the subject and I like the fact that the publisher is Italian! I really wish I could buy a copy.
Are the costs and quality so much better in Italy that it's simply not feasible to have it made in the US? I could understand using China because the cost is drastically lower (though I see your point about the political situation), but Italy isn't a low cost country, and the costs for shipping are surely much higher than if you were shipping within the US. I think I'm just asking this: why Italy, why not US?
In my research and discussions with my designer and looking at a ton of photo books I own that were printed by ebs, I made the choice to go with ebs who’s in Italy.
@@froknowsphoto Thanks. That seems fair. When you're going for quality you've got to be confident you find a company who can produce great results. I like that you're not cutting any corners just to save a few dollars. Looking forward to see how this turns out.
You forgot to mention the inevitable cost of courtesy copies you'll probably need and the potential added cost in the Euro/Dollar exchange rate. Many of your followers live outside the US, making an even higher shipping cost and possible Custom's charges in the receiving Countries.
Could you possibly ship a few copies to a European Amazon warehouse so that people from Europe could also get their hands on the book. Would save on shipping costs for you and increase the amount of potential buyers.
Jared, I was interested in the topic, as I also dream about making own photography-ish book. Then you are talked aboud how many thousands of book to print, I start to think "Who the hell is going to buy them?". And I asked myself: Am I occasionally going to buy a book of this hairy guy? And there it starts to be strange: I found out that I watch your videos a couple of years and I somehow value your opinions on camera gear, but I actually do not know your photos whatsoever. That's strange: you are [allegedly] a photographer, but you never presented your photography work here otherwise than showing them as an examples of the some other topic: camera gear, type of photography, photography technique, etc. Based on your youtube channel, I never have a need to find you on Instagram or visit your personal web page to see your work and get inspired. Maybe it sounds harsh, but I'm trying to be constructive with my critique and address a gap in your communication. Or I can say it in Jared Polin's way: "What is the point of buying a photography book of this camera gear reviewer?"
Dude, you can do all of the work yourself except the binding. Take your text block ( the internal pages ) and take it to a book binder. You will save thousands. I've made my own books, bound them in leather. My books were over 400 pages.
ProTip: Publish a photo ebook. It costs next to nothing and will enable you to share your work and portfolio with the entire world, instantly and for free. Now all we need are subscription models for books, where authors are paid per-page instead of purchasing a complete book. We need that for art & photo ebooks to thrive.
Bro, don't understand, why you would do Kickstarter campaign to support your book. You are a millionaire, you make tons of money from all your social media, you have over million subscribers just here on RUclips alone that generates loads of income, and still, you want other people to pay for your business undertaking. Duh. That is grossly cheap from you, just to say the least. More over, you don't have to print in Italy. You can print in USA with JIT ( Just In Time production ) that requires no upfront investment. There are many high quality domestic self-publishing companies to choose from. I guess, the richer you are, the cheaper you become. Some people just make me wonder...
I could pay off my student debt and buy a couple a7siii’s with that photo book HAHA. This sounds so interesting, looking forward to watching it till the end! 💯✔️😎
There are many USA printers here that can so as good a job. Layout of a photobook without 10,000 words is very simple. I have been a photographer for 20 years and in printing for 8 so I know what I am talking about. 10.5"x14" is too big a book. Sueza's book about someone who actually was elected prez twice and 8 years of content did not make such a big book. Petes book is $24 on Amazon. Bernie was running for prez of America, not Vermont, born in NY. Green and gold is tacky unless it is an old British Jaguar car. I think a more lively colors (red and blue with the white pages) to the b/w art to pop and represent the USA flag without looking like July 4th parade, yet patriotic. I am self-publishing a photobook and doing the photos, writing, layout, proofing myself and will print in USA.
I would engage Bernie in this ride.. 1000 books high gloss high quality with personal hand written note from Bernie & his signature for $1000-2000 (perhaps 10000) or so per copy for special people.. Shared profits but huge exposure in political media for the future.. That's where u wanna be. U don't wanna crumbs u wanna piece of the pie.. It takes a time..
The Pareto principal says you should be able to sell to 20% of your subscribers. However, I would say you should be safe on selling 20% of your average view count. I bet you will sell 5000-10,000 easily.
Now this is content the inside scoop on the business side of things with real numbers.
Don’t cheap out on the designer. Good advice. An experienced designer knows SO much more beside how to make thinks look nice. We can help you avoid pitfalls, work with a printer, make recommendations on the final product and save you a ton of headaches.
Italian here, happy to hear you are printing here in Italy :D
@viewz best cars tell that to Japan. Sure spend the price of a mansion on a car that breaks faster than fine china
Yep Jared, it is 1 and a half because in Italy we use commas to separate the decimals
I doubt it’s the cost of overs.

does this company do one-offs? I'd like to make a coffee table photo book of my work for myself/for my parents. only like 50-100 pages, and id pay $300 for it.
You might want to try Printique in NYC... I've used them before and they're pretty good.
Does this company just print individual books as a Portfolio ?
Jesus! That’s a great eye opener mate 👌
I hate politics, and am not the biggest fan of Bernie, however after listening to him on Joe Rogan I got a newfound respect for him. It was nice that he was actually able to sit down and talk with someone who actually let him talk. I will be buying this book for the coffee table.
I'LL TAKE 2 PLZ
That’s really a cool project Jared
Sir review Pentax cameras
Excellent !.. And it's Historical too..
What is the name of the Designer you hired and how did you find her?
Great idea and I might see about getting one, if postage to Scotland 🏴 is not tooooo much of course.
@sean paul mac bahahaha. As we are not in Europe anymore, thanks to Brexit, it will probably be cheaper posting it from the USA than Italy
I enjoyed this
I’m a fan lover of camera D5600
Past Book through Facebook is easy and fine.
That's right Jared blame the calculator🤭😂 Very interesting video, if Bernie is holding a Canon R5 on the cover, then I'm in 🤣
Any extra import costs like customs, VAT or similar?
@Patrick Lyons And I specifically ment for Jared when he imports the books from Italy
Perfeclty in time, I'm about to do something similar and I'm fro Italy, so...
H&T's are HEAD & TAIL bands.
I’m watching
Have you factored in the cost of the photographer. Don't plan to retire just yet
I could pay off my student debt and buy a couple a7siii’s with that photo book HAHA. This sounds so interesting, looking forward to watching it till the end! 💯✔️😎
Great video, I am thinking to self publish mine book in future, so I would like to see how is your book going on< all the best for you :)
