Dads - take note: This is what little boys need. Not money, not you working 80 hour weeks -- they need a dad. This old duffer is a dad. What an awesome story!
I hope Emmett still visits Erling!! I think Emmett helped Erling stay young and Erling passed wisdom to Emmett. May their precious friendship be blessed.
This used to be everyday America, a common story of the older and wiser of the neighborhoods imparting wisdom and great friendship to the young and eager to learn. That this is even a noteworthy story signals the decline of our nation's heart and soul. A heartwarming story it is though, and good to see. I do so wish the families would be able to work something out and stay neighbors. These two need each other.
That used to be the UK as well, ive been told that anyway. When i was a kid, i used to play out front and the neighbours would have a go. They put their foot out when my sister was on her bike and she fell off and i was called a bitch. We were really young and werent doing anything to their property or to them but they were, at times, absolutely horrible. I have heard it was better before that though. Nothing is the same anymore, its so sad.
Down here in the southern US, during spring and summer, we slept with only the screen door shut and with the windows open save for the screens there to allow the cool night air to circulate from early evening until around lunchtime. We didn't really use a/c much. Going to town , we would shop and never worry about locking our car doors or rolling up the windows for fear if theft even when we laid merchandise of obvious value in the seats. Everyone on the streets spoke with you and asked about family and the like. All of our neighbors knew one another well , and our parents would play bridge in one if the homes, usually ours, and all of the children would play. The older girls, teens, would watch the children and make lemonade or sweet iced tea and bring us snacks. Then when bridge was done, the parents and older folks would be outside playing as well. This was going on until the mud eighties , but my childhood was mostly the 70s, as I was born in 1967. I will add, this town at its peak had 5000 people, and now has less than half that. Crime, and the types of it, the less neighborly attitudes of some, but certainly less interaction, has gotten much worse even with lower numbers. It is a symptom of the devaluation of life and friendship and higher value placed now on superfluous goods . It is a failure of child rearing that has been passed on through subsequent generations, the lack of a substantive national struggle to unite us where friendship is laced above all else, and popular culture's decline into complete moral decay. What was once wrong is right, what was right us wrong, and we pay the price but most wonder still as to the cause of its inflation. The televisions have become the replacement for patenting or at least a good nanny, of which I was blessed to have both, and children are drilled with values other than traditional ones that led to to greatest peace, prosperity, and unbound possibilities in the history of the world all across the lands of the allies. We have become piteous creatures enslaved by our desires alone, rather than the freemen we were bought through blood to be. Our debt to those before us is being repaid by ineptitude and apathy.
Charles B. Yep, that pretty much sums it up. Most of the children these days are dragged up. I would have loved to have been born before the 90s, preferably the 50s so i could have experienced the 70s.I've been told it wasn't perfect back then but it sure would have been better than how it is these days! I've heard from my mum, gran and other older folk that everything was better before. Ok, they didnt have technology but what they did have was a better, safer life. Kids could go out and play, now they're inside on videogames/computer or even worse, doing drugs, alcohol etc. It's not to say they're all like that but a lot of them are. It isn't their fault. It's the way it has become. I was brought up to be decent, we didnt run around screaming like maniacs, having tantrums. I see kids doing that all the time now. They're horrendous, their parents are young, clueless and spend little time with them and the kids are practically begging for attention. Maybe it will get better but i seriously doubt it. In the UK, there's too many people, a lot of foreigners and the people they're allowing in, are not the best. Not all, some ive met are lovely but a lot are drug dealers and criminals and are generally just scum but it puts strain on housing and jobs, too much competition, too much poverty etc. I can say that the UK has fallen apart big time and i guess America is the same. I am actually considering moving to Canada because i'm so fed up of it all. It does need to change, it's such a shame that kids are losing their freedom and their innocence and that people are not feeling optimistic about the future, instead they're dreading it.What a great world we live in..
My grandfather was in WWII, I would love to be able to send this gentleman a card & pics I have saved from my grandfather's collection. The elderly are often forgotten & yet they have the very best first hand stories to tell. Better than any history book.
I was so sad to hear this gentleman passed away...What a beautiful friendship these 2 shared with one another. She was so right about those little voices...When he says, "I love him." That got me right in the heart!! May little Emmett never forget that special bond they shared...Rest in peace dear Erling. Thank u for sharing your precious story with the world. It very much touched my 💓, as I'm sure it did many others.
RIP Erling.....They took Emmet for visits and they saw each other right before he died, it seemed like they both knew it was going to be their last visit.
Poor Erling!! Maybe they do have a plan to keep their friendship intact. I have a hard time believing the family doesn't see the importance of that bond. For both of them.
Erling Kindem passed away Oct 29, 2016. The little boy apparently knew what had happened and was deeply hurt by it. I believe that him giving up the house for a senior apartment only hastened his death. It sometime happens that elderly people rely on non related people as their own relatives don't seem to have time for them.
Well, it makes sense that his kids had to "convince him" to get a senior apt... coz it seems to me that growing & tending your own vegetable garden, restoring (& riding) a bicycle, and snow-blowing multiple walking paths in winter means you DON'T need to be re-located to a "senior apt." (Way to go "kids!!!!")
I think the little guy knows he's getting the benefit of now 90 years of knowledge and for the older man, he's getting a spark of youth, curiosity, and a new sense of purpose as he patiently passes along knowledge to the youngster. what a touching story. such a giant age difference and yet they do truly love each other. The story of the older guys 90th birthday party and the youngster visiting him at his new home was precious, they now share dog tags that say "friends for life". what a sweet tear jerkier. I am smitten with these wonderful men, both young and old. Erling is so patient, take note fathers indeed, this is what little boys (and girls) need from their dads and grandfathers too.
Look, they need more room for a growing family. Is it so wrong? And I understand the outrage over putting Mr. Erling in a home, but maybe the poor guy is not doing all that well. We do not know the whole story.
Oh, that was so sweet and so sad! But wow, taking away this old man's happiness just for... a bigger house? Did they even say the mother was pregnant? Good grief. How much longer is the poor guy going to be alive? You couldn't stick it out a few more years? Don't even get me started on his kids.
thats a shame, erling doent need to go into a home, just cause he is about to turn 90, really, erling, come to florida, you deserve better, your a great person. there is a home here you can move into. what is wrong with his kids or grandkids, or what about emmitts family.
Dads - take note: This is what little boys need. Not money, not you working 80 hour weeks -- they need a dad. This old duffer is a dad. What an awesome story!
Exactly, exactly.
Herbert?
Precisely!
Nathan Chenov I see some trolling happening here.
To bad I can only like this comment once. You are so correct Squiffy.
That kid is going to learn more about life than any teen today. No replacement for a friend like that...
A child and very old person are very similar, as they tend to be truthful about everything.
True, children are very innocent and want to believe everything and the elderly do not have time for lies and BS.
Bring the elderly gentleman with you into your new, bigger home. Treat him as a surrogate granddad. It's a win-win for all.
Real talk
Jenn Ross For real!!!
I’m going to pretend this is what happened so I feel better.
I hope Emmett still visits Erling!! I think Emmett helped Erling stay young and Erling passed wisdom to Emmett. May their precious friendship be blessed.
Emmett went to the nursing home to celebrate Erlings 90th birthday, Read it online. Awesome story.
Erling passed away Oct 29, 2016. Probably giving up his house likely damped his spirits and hastened his death.
@@muffs55mercury61 that’s possible.
This made me cry. I hope they get to visit each other. What a wonderful neighbor to have!
What a sweet story.
RIP Mr. Kindem!! Thank you for your service and the kindness that you have shown us through your interactions with Emmett.
I love this story. Wish they didn't have to separate.
The baby boy know one thing, to hang around older people. I always have hung around older people. They teach you the right things in life
that baby is so smart
I wish he will never die and remains to live forever...
It would be nice for the boy and the old man.
RIP Erling Kindem. God bless you.
gryphon202 did he pass away?
Just recently.

Spellcheck is to be blamed for any misspelling in the previous post.

Sobbing. Beautiful. Touching. Sad.

R.I.P Erling. Their friendship touched so many hearts. Hurts to see how sad Erling is, hope he has found peace. Emmett just received a guardian angel.

We watched this in class today and I just had to watch it again at home.
They should just live with him 😭😭😭😭😭
How can three people dislike this! RIDICULOUS!
Poor Erling!! Maybe they do have a plan to keep their friendship intact. I have a hard time believing the family doesn't see the importance of that bond. For both of them.
This is so adorable!!
Love like this gives hope.
so cute

I appreciate knowing what happened to Erling, as I did wonder and I 100% agree that the move definitely sped up everything.
How can anyone dislike this? Sad

Amazing story bless them all
This made me cry
I feel so sad!!!!😭

That is sweet.
RIP Erling Kindem
"Got any 'matoes?"
Thats so cute omg 😭😂❤️
I lost it when the boy said, “I love him.”
I loved this
They were friends in a former life. Children remember former lives often.
...I got something in my eye
I just can't help but wonder what would really make certain people hate hate these 2 great friends or their story.
It’s been a year without Ernest.🙏
This makes me so sad!!!
good story
Words fail me!
Aww my English teacher showed this to us and Erling just died last week😿😿it must've hard for Emmet 😿😿
so precious :)
i was happy in the beginning but at the end... that was sad
Stupid. You'd trade a priceless friendship for a bigger house. And shame on Erling's kids for sticking him in a home. Let the man have some dignity.
My thoughts exactly!
The old guy may very well die of a lonely, broken heart when his wife passes.
Agreed. I hope they at least let the kid visit the guy.
Look, they need more room for a growing family. Is it so wrong? And I understand the outrage over putting Mr. Erling in a home, but maybe the poor guy is not doing all that well. We do not know the whole story.
I know it doesn't seem right.
His kids just want to sell his house, this man seems to be getting along fine. I would love to hear an update four years later!
I have a lot of friends from 12-106 years of age
I would donate some money for a bigger house for them.
Wish my Great Grandpa didn't pass away he would have been 92
Oh, that was so sweet and so sad!
But wow, taking away this old man's happiness just for... a bigger house? Did they even say the mother was pregnant? Good grief. How much longer is the poor guy going to be alive? You couldn't stick it out a few more years?
Don't even get me started on his kids.
I'm not a crier but this got to me. But then, I had to laugh because it could almost be Dennis the Mennace and Mr. Wilson all over again.
The feels
thats a shame, erling doent need to go into a home, just cause he is about to turn 90, really, erling, come to florida, you deserve better, your a great person. there is a home here you can move into. what is wrong with his kids or grandkids, or what about emmitts family.
beautiful story. I know there was a follow up but I can't find it
in themix Erling passed away last week.
Ok plot twist they were best buddies in the great war and the boy was his sarge and reborn again
My goodness, what a beautiful woman!
Omg i am crying 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔poor people
Damn this is very sad.
