Bienenstich tale: because of a dispute between the towns Linz and Andernach in 1474, Linz tried to attack Andernach but two boys saw them coming and threw bee hives at them. Andernach celebrated with a cake which was called Bienenstich from that day on. But it´s most likely how the cream layer is made and it´s very sweet, when I was a kid and you had cake like this on the table outside you got surrounded by bees and wasps, wasps prefere fruit cakes though.
I live close to the Black Forest and a colleague of mine who was from there once told us that she made the cake herself and instead of putting the cherries in the brandy for an hour, she left them in for a day. Her party was quite lively afterwards. 😊
