Any track you want to pick from this concert 'Oils on the Water' is just brilliant.
Can't wait for the next one you discover.
Kosciusko is the highest mountain in Australia and it gets its name because of explorer Paul Edmund de Strzelecki - he was from Poland and he named our highest peak after a Polish national hero (Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kościuszko) who had nothing to do with Australia.
I was at that concert - Oils on the Water - on Goat Island in the middle of Sydney Harbour. Had to 'escape' from boarding school to see it. Just brilliant memories. Thanks guys!
Live there is no better high energy band ,at their peak ,they would play at this intensity for up to 2.5 hours.
My all time favourite band .
His dancing is like a brand/trademark and every Oils fan has done it at some point.
Unlike many bands, the drummer, Rob Hirst, co-writes many of the the band's songs. Sometimes he is writes the songs and then the band co-write.
My favorite Midnight Oil track; this was not popular in the states, but I've been suggesting it for anyone who might be so inclined. Love the dramatic entrance of the strings near the end. Thanks for this upload.
For me Midnight Oil are the most important band Australia has produced.
Incredible musicianship and talents that put on a hell of a live show
They wrote about topics about Australia and the world that are still relevant today
Great band
heres my Aussie band -i'm on the red guitar ...you probably will dig it if you like the oils !
cheers !! "the great Australian dream " ruclips.net/video/VjxLtraxGTU/видео.html
Mt Kosciusko is Australia's tallest Mountain.
A MASSIVE 226 feet high it's probably just a sand dune 😅
The question is though, can you see your back garden from it?

@@SPKdesign1 No, it's only 1,250 Metres taller than England's highest peak.
@@getreal4371 I'll remember that next time I'm in England.
Great drummer
great concert. i wasn't there, but .. the footage says it all
I once read that The Oils was a band to highlight the drumming of Rob Hurst. And he is a great drummer, and singer too! Great reaction guys. May I suggest Stand In Line or Bus To Bondi next? But to be honest, any Oils is a good option!
Saw them in 1987. They were an incredible live act.
1982-1987x2 -2022
Peter Gifford on Bass!! Fantastic!
Yep, that's a great song 🎵
Try drumming with this level on intensity and singing at the same time… yeah… what an athlete!
Saw them live during their "Species Deceases tour" at Philip Island Victoria 1986..... One of the best bands live.. Even 38 years ago...." You don't throw punches at a Midnight Oil concert ya Wombat.... Security get your act together..." Peter Garret when a fight broke out in the crowd..... 38 years....
Hope the big C goes easy on you. I was at that concert. The legendary Oils On The Water. A celebration of the 10th year of Sydney radio station 2JJ in 85. You have to watch the whole concert. It went mad.
Lucky you Kaitlin. I was in England when this concert was happening.
@@Robbo766 it was an awesome gig. The footage is electric, but imagine being there!
@@kaitlynbatt_ I know Kaitlin... I know I missed out. I got the DVD.
@@Robbo766 The DVD isn't as good as being there. You really mised out on something Robbo. Just sayin' 😃
@@kaitlynbatt_ Thanx Kaitlyn, I'll turn to you whenever I need salt rubbed into my wounds. It's 38 years of pain for not being there
The reason why Rob Hirst is doing a lot of the lead singing on the Red Sails album is because of Peter Garrett's involvement with the Nuclear Disarmament Party in 1984. Rob is a great drummer, good singer and songwriter in his own right. Try his side project band, Ghostwriters ''someone's singing new york new york''
True story 👍 and it worked out well
Didn't know that and I'm an oils freak, I put it down to writing and arrangement choice's. Where did you read or hear this about Rob?
@@jezzusj I read it in a book about Midnight Oils released a few years back. I think, from what I remember reading, that The Oils were in Japan and Peter Garrett was spending a lot of time in Australia doing his Anti-nuke stuff. The writer might have been talking porkies, but it was an official Oils biography with band members contributing stories. The book's called ''Beds Are Burnjing'' by Mark Dodshon.
@@VolumeEleven ok cool, thanks for replying
The entire Ghostwriter's album is great.
My country
Red Sails in the Sunset had a huge impact on, I was 13 already a fan and listened to this on my Walkman so much. Happy hopeful days 🤗 Walkmans lol.
🎵"Oh ma-ma-myyy, the 'rona!"🎵
Get well again swiftly, Chris bro!
I was at this concert (and I was at the Wanda Beach one in 82). The sound and vision captures only so much. This is tame in comparison to their other numbers.
Awesome, Vanessa! 😀👍 Was it as hot on that day in '85 as it seems to me?😅
@@mightyV444 It was fairly hot, but not intolerable. It was about January 1985, which meant we were at the peak of summer in Australia and the crowd just grew and grew.
It was quite a hot night by the time the band finished. The Wanda Beach one had rain which made the concert even more fun.
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr - Ah! Okay! 😀 Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure whether the band were sweating from the start due to the Summer heat or possibly more from the stage lights. Probably both 😊 I'm happy for you having been able to attend those shows! 😀👍 I assume the audience had made their way to Goat Island by boat/ferry? 🙂
@@mightyV444 That's how we got there. I don't think it was the weather that made the Oils sweat. It might have had something to do with the lights as well as the warm weather. I've seen a few awesome gigs done on that land.
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr - Oh! I'd always assumed theirs might've been the _only_ concert being held there! 😅 Special occasion (3JJJ's 10th Birthday) ---> special location (an island around Sydney Harbour), you know? 😀
Brilliant.
The dancing is uniquely bad by Peter Garrett. Funny how so many kids copied it for a laugh back in the 80s. In the 90s Elaine from Sienfield created her own uniquely bad dance style.
I can't even imagine a Midnight Oil show _without_ Garrett's signature moves! 😄 One of those kids you mentioned also pops onto the stage during this show, at the start of 'Read About It' 😁
the only thing with these live midnight oil videos is that some of their songs from the early 80s are intricately produced so the live version won't be the same experience as the studio version. "US Forces" would be another song of theirs that would fall into this category. if you ever do US Forces you have to do the studio version.
Peters strong reaction to the ship was because it’s Navy
Rob Hirst has a great voice and is a brilliant drummer. He sings on quite a few of their songs. Given where my country is at politically, at the moment, i would love if you did "One Country" by Midnight Oil. I still own this concert at Goat Island in Sydney Harbour on VHS and DVD and have watched it multiple times. I remember watching it live on tv on the ABC when i was just 12 years old with my older brother.
You really need to check out their performance at the Capitol Theater in Sydney circa 1982 before they had an international following (it's on RUclips). They are at the height of their raw power, lean and hungry. And they do most pf the tracks off 10, 9, 8..., which in my opinion is one of the best albums of the 1980's. They also do a bunch of earlier tunes they didn't often perform, including 'Brave Faces.' 10, 9, 8... is one of my desert island records. Just great from start to finish.
Brilliant suggestion. Not sure I seen any of the Capitol Theater footage for decades. Be awesome if you can forward the link for that so can check it out myself this weekend.
'10 to 1' Just an album with so much passion and experimentation on it. Every track is unique and was a must own for a generation growing up in the early 80's. Should do a whole album review.
Never left an Oils concert dry ...Always soaking wet in sweat ...
Saw them in 1988 oh how I loved them back then and how I hated them when Garrett moved into politics.
Good stuff! Try any Oils from the 82 Capitol Theatre concert! BTW, Mt Kosiusko is the tallest mountain in Australia
Named after a Polish explorer. Correct pronunciation is closer to Koo Shoosh Ko
While Peter Garrett, is the main singer…. Rob Hirst ( drums) does take some lead duties…. This song and another When the Generals Talk….. plenty more Midnight Oil.
Rob once said in an interview that it had been quite a challenge to sing this insanely high while still powerful and then also drum at the same time 😅 Bassist Peter Gifford sings a lot in this one, too! 😀👍
he was saying hello to the navy ship.......only in australia mate.....sad that the music world is not aware of how good this band was.....all very talenred and are regarded as national treasures in my country....
You should do the whole Goat Island concert
We tried to do the concert for Patreon. Somehow, it didn't record.
What is "good dancing"?
I'm thinking these guys are Aussies?
Yes they are from across the ditch unlike us kiwi sheep lovers they're into Dingos!!!k9s that's just so wrong 😅 ps I've been very lucky to have seen these guys four times over my life time 👍
Peters dancing i saw them two nights in a row at the Super top 8000 capacity tent and on the Friday night he danced off the front of the stage and broke his leg off stage for a bit then finished the gig sitting on a stool and played the next night with crutches he is bloody awesome live and im with him politically
@@heathcornbeef sorry, saying we screw native animals just sounds weird to us. You say that to Aussies and we'll just wonder wtf is with you.
@@heathcornbeef Ew Dingos!
@@kaitlynbatt_ come to Aotearoa New Zealand for a different perspective 👍 we love to take the piss out of each other and everyone else
You do know that there is this school and mode called avant garde dancing, n'est-ce pas?
By the way: No, he does _not_ fall off 😄 That ending has so much atmosphere, and the big ship is passing by in the exact right moment too 😊 And as had already been said, this entire show is great from start to finish, and 'Best Of Both Worlds' is the best show opener I've come across on YT ...with Rob Halford's 'Harley through a gate of Marshall stacks' stage entrance at the US Festival '83 a close second 😂
I don't remember him falling off at that particular concert.
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr - Which implies he did at others 😅
@@mightyV444 He did fall off things. I think he fell off an speaker at that protest concert outside the Exxon (?) building in New York. I do remember him having a few accidents.
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr - Oh wow! Nothing too serious though, I assume?! And yes, it was the Exxon building 🙂
@@mightyV444 He kept doing shows, so I assume it wasn't too serious. If you're that tall and doing that kind of performance, you're gonna fall once a while.
Nope .. just nope …👀
👍🏴
Explain, please! 🙂
@@mightyV444 Please don't? lol
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr - Nah, I'm curious! Jay usually does like energetic music played on real instruments! 🙂
@@mightyV444 of course mightyV , I ADORED beds are burning and still do , but Midnight Oil didn’t go on to conquer the rest of the world a La INXS.. so I’m not familiar with a lot of their other material that my antipodean cousins have had time to appreciate ( wow this IS mature 😂 )..
In terms of a stand alone song , I found I didn’t appreciate it much and tbh I’m not sure that synth was totally in tune with the tamest of the song as I found it a bit jarring . Unlike the comment I seen the other day about some here enjoying shitting on others favs ( it was me he was talking about ) nothing could be further from the truth mightyV , when someone asks the Haniers for a VERY specific track on a specific vid they are actually saying to the rest of us “ I love this , what do YOU think ?”, otherwise they would just play it for themselves in their house or car .
I’m not shitting on this track , I’m just not moved in any way shape or form by it and gently said so . I dont set out to upset others and laugh my bum off when others criticise tracks I adore , or me in general .
I’m with Heath on this one , life’s too short , be honest , say your piece and move on , and I hope that’s what I do ✊😀
