  • From the original first pressing, 1964. Replaced on all subsequent LP and CD releases with another version recorded when Davis wasn’t so hoarse. This track has the greatest difference from the CD version, being nearly a minute shorter with various other changes.
GOLDEN BOY was a musical by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, with a book adapted by Clifford Odets (who wrote the source play). The plot regards a young black boxer and his travails trying to attain fame and fortune.
From the Capitol Original Cast Album, released 1964. Ripped by myself from a shoddy source.

I saw this amazing show in 1965 with co-workers from NY Telephone Company. My first trip to New York as a young adult, not having been there since I was seven. The show was fantastic..Sammy dancing to his boxing moves(he portrayed a boxer) and the cast dancing and singing to I think it was |"125 Street". It was fantastic...and being so close to Sammy was indeed a thrill. Talent like this comes along once maybe in 100 years.

This is very interesting to listen to , as it was recorded when the show first opened. Sam was giving it his best, and his inflections are stunning. Paula is equally as powerful.

I was a new secretary in New York City, 20 years old, when I got a chance to see this show with Sammy and Paula Wayne. My sister and I could only get standing room tickets, but we stood at the back of the orchestra and were blown away by this show and of course by Sammy. I immediately bought the LP and owned it for a long time. I listened to that record over and over, and love the music now just as much as I did then. What a triumph for Sammy. No one could do this show again. It was his.
