Heartbreaking. The story of Mountain Folk and their forced removal from Shenandoah National Park is one of the saddest in America. They were victims on every level and it is a national disgrace how they were robbed and disrespected. I actually feel their ancestors should be given land back. It is an embarrassment to the country. Virginia Baugher as seen in this video is my boyfriend's grandmother. We often hike up to the old homes foundations that still remain from their homes being demolished. All that stands as proof something happened is a small installation in Elkton Virginia with the names of the families who were forced to leave their land and their homes behind. This is a heartbreaking true story that's still painful to these families to this day.
In 1739 my grandpa received 235 acres from King George he ended up owning 535 acres the land was on circle dr. ,where the motel on skyline Dr.. He supplied 1000 lbs beef for the revolutionary War .James Madison was he neighbor.
I visited Skyline Drive for the first time recently. It was absolutely gorgeous, but when I saw the books in the gift shop about the displacement (surprised they were there), and found out what had happened, all I could think about were those poor people. The beauty was tainted. Nature should never be prioritized over people. There plenty of places full of natural beauty that have people living on it harmoniously with nature. That’s what should have been done.
I live in Front Royal, have since 1965. Went to school with many of the children of the children that lived on the mountain. “Those people” they say lived in poverty, and were drags on society. “ Those people” were ignorant examples of humanity and therefore need to be removed from what we want, the mountain. Well let me tell you those remarks can’t be farther from the truth.

I’m working with a group called Children of Shenandoah who is working to get the story told. It is comprised mainly of descendants whose families lost their land, but also those of us who want the story told. My ancestors were gone before this happened. They had already left the mountain probably 20 yeses before.
I used to hike in the park in the late 1960s. Someone told me there was one old lady still living in her family home at the time--that she would be allowed to stay until she died. Is that true?
My family was part of being run off our land, i wasn't born. But i know we was forced out at more less gun point and my people watch there home be burnt to the ground as did many that lived there. Thats what they would do so you would know that there was no use coming back. They would burn it or destroy it in front of you.
It's sad to hear stories like this. My grandparents had to promptly move from their location on the Bell Ranch in New Mexico because they were going to build Lake Conchas. Tinaja Camp is under the water today. A lot of Indian history and artifacts are buried with it. 😢 It doesn't take much for the government to screw up a lot of things.
The names should be present on this video & also throughout the park. They resourced the land & built dwellings & made sustainable lives & families.... True history of living off the land..... The government stole the people's livelihoods, generational property, & heritage from large families. The people relocated should be recognized by their names.

I can assure you there is no fake accent. I know some of them people in the video, and live next to the park here in Virginia. I was on the mountain a few weeks ago for a picnic. Pretty sad our federal government that took all this land can’t even maintain it. Grass up to knees in picnic area’s. No trash receptacles anymore, no bathroom with running water. But they are taking care of it for us.
My mother’s family was displaced by a reservoir during the 1960s, so this hits home.

This happened in the Cuyahoga national park that runs between Akron and Cleveland Ohio in the 1980's until the late 1990's.

My grandmother uncle had land there and the Maiden family cemetery is still maintained by the family.

It's true! Her name was Annie Shenk and she passed in 1979 (she wad 92!)
