Mapex is seriously one of the most underrated brands in drums, though I think that's been changing over the past several years. Great snare and video, guys!
I have 2 original 14x6 Black Panther deep forest walnut snares and I absolutely love them. I bought a second one a few years ago just Incase anything ever happened to the one I had, I would have a back up. I need to get my hands on one of these.
I have a maple deluxe black panther snare from '97. Black with gold hardware and die-cast hoops and it sounds great! Glad to see mapex is making some great drums again after the underwhelming mydentity series. Plus they're now offering like four other snare options with the Armory series that you can exchange for the tomahawk snare. Mapex all about that snare life now xD
I find walnut so fascinating on how it reacts when turned into a circle. In my mind it really has everything you want in a species of wood. Then your shape it into nice thin 6ply shells with a round over 45 and you just get a delicious sound. Great review guys!
I completely agree with you on the fact that in the low and medium tunings this drum really sounded top notch! With that being said, exactly what is the pitch of this drum at a medium, low and also high pitches? Thank you for doing these reviews! I enjoy each and every one of them.
One of the best snares I ever heard, I almost bought the Tama SLP walnut , so glad I stumbled onto this one by chance ! This blows away the Tama in every regard ...Amazing sound ! I cant wait until mine shows up !
I just tried to buy a Tama Star walnut, it's an absolutely lovely wood for drums. I chose a 14" x 6.5" which was a bargain at £395. Maybe too much of a bargain as the retailer just changed their delivery estimate from this week to 23 more weeks. Don't think they expect anyone to wait that long, so order cancelled. A Star zebrawood coming instead, although it's almost double the price, but worth it as it's just been discontinued so will be very rare. Think I will still want a walnut snare in the future, very punchy sound to them. Did you end up getting this Mapex?
@@billynolanjr2266 Interestingly I just spent some time A/Bing this Mapex with the Tama G-Walnut. They were surprisingly close, with the Tama being a little brighter. BUT, the Tama comes with a 30 strand snare wire (to the Mapex's 16). Also the Mapex ships with a thicker head. Given how Mapex builds drums for many other brands, I wouldn't be surprised if they were built side by side. So either is good, but I do feel the Mapex is better out of the box.
To the people who had tried both, how does it differenciate from the Shadow snare? And which one would you chose? Im looking for punchy/canon sound that have wide range without compromising body… thx!
I find that the Black Panther sounds much better with a raised black gloved fist keeping the backbeat on song. The Wakanda doesn't feel right as knotted arms don't articulate well. Love the sound. Thank you.
Thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these. Will go nicely with the Saturn V all matchy n everything. Edit....managed to get an original 90s Deep Forest for £180, oh my me what a snare!
I have a Mapex Black Panther Retrosonic which is also a full walnut shell. Fantastic in low and mid tuning ranges. Definitely a prize in my collection! Otherwise I'd be getting one of these. Great deal.
Every demo I've heard of the Retrosonic kit and snare sounded amazing. A shame they appear to be impossible to get with so few made. A kit popped up on eBay recently but I didn't have the funds. I wish it was a stock kit like the other Black Panther stuff so I could look forward to buying one in the future. This 30th Anniversary sounds nice too, a bit more agressive than the Retrosonic. Also limited run :-\ You are lucky to have your Retrosonic.

You need to consider that it is still a pretty young brand, compared to Tama (45), DW (47), Yamaha Drums (52), Pearl (73), Sonor (144).
ye true. grandpa gretschie and sono been at it for ages

I love how high tuning makes the snare sound more metal-shelled than wood-shelled a lot, and the understated look suits the sound too 👌

Love the clean, ringy overtones! This is what i want out of a snare.
I love Mapex Snare

Michael Rowe nolly explained on their snare tuning video that low tuning = c med = d on the batterhead. Reso side always high a
Beautiful. I like my Black Panthers a lot.

Never been a fan of Mapex, until I saw Vern Spevak play on RUclips.
Great sound and great drummer.
Do you guys happen to know how many Mapex is making? How many for England, US, Europe, etc... overall?
They are only making 600 of these for the 30th Anniversary!
