    This little Chihuahua is in hypoglycemic shock. I found her this way in the morning when I got up. My husband quickly grabbed the phone and started recording while I began the process of getting Nutri-cal down her. I'll say it's not uncommon with little chihuahua puppies. First, don't panic. It looks like a seizure, but the solution is fairly easy. Just be prepared and have Nutri-cal handy. Put a dollop on your finger - about the same amount of toothpaste you would use on your toothbrush. Gently open her mouth and push the Nutri-cal in. She will probably start to lick or slowly swallow the Nutri-cal, and then let her rest for a few minutes. Watch her. Try another dollop in a few minutes. At this time, you'll probably begin noticing her energy level start improving. It'll take time and be patient. But again, your puppy will begin to awaken from this hypoglycemic state.
    The problem was that Chihuahuas are the smallest breed. They need food available to them throughout the night. I believe in "free feeding" my Chihuahuas for this very reason. Larger breeds can go through the night without food, but not Chihuahuas.
    Remember, the key is not to panic. I've heard from Chihuahua owners who will rush to the emergency vet and pay two or three thousand dollars, only to find out that the puppy was in hypoglycemic shock. How sad for her. She's at the doctor's office getting poked with needles and tested and handled in unfamiliar surroundings. The owner is out thousands of dollars, plus the time delay of just getting to the vet.

      @@SweetiePiePets Me too im so glad I came across this video , thank you soooo much . I have a Pomeranian puppy 11 weeks old she had the same thing yours had today, I rushed her to the vet he really strongly advised me to give her back because I will have thousands of pounds out of pocket . she is normal now he gave me diazepam to put in her bum in case she has another epilepsy wait 5 minutes then use the diazapam. i love her so much but i also dont have money like that. I thought my son had feed her when he went to college but he hasnt gone so i only fed her in the afternoon then 3rd feed 5 pm if it is low sugar does it means she might never had this happen again ?? please some one help understand thanks

      @SweetiePiePets  5 лет назад +6

      Estela Burrows so sorry I had missed your last question. It’s is likely she can have low blood sugar again because she is small and her tiny frame doesn’t store enough energy to sustain her for long. I recommend to feed her more often (every 3 hours or so) or just “free feed” meaning she has a bowl of food available all the time. I also recommend having Nutrical on hand.

      A vet that does not know hypoglycemia, a very common problem with puppies!?
      THAT PERSON HAS NO RIGHT TO TREAT PATIENTS if they are clueless about their job!!
      I know it's been 2 years since your comment, but you NEED to go to another vet that knows what he/she's doing.

    If you have a small dog they need to eat every couple hours when there tinny. You need to get corn syrup or sugar. Rub it on there gums. They’ll snap out in seconds then feed them immediately. Yes you can do this when there completely out.

It’s a very tiny puppy I thought it was having a seizure and I started praying for him and of course was crying. I just came from the Vet ER was told $5k-7k for hospital stay, which we could not afford, we took her home and was considering taking out a loan to save her because she had a second seizure/hypoglycemic reaction but then God led me to your video. My dog started being able to lift her head and responsive, did I say that she is in the last days of her pregnancy.

    Just wanted to note, for a faster response and the best jump in their glucose stabilizing, give Karo syrup (or some type of syrup/sugar water)... That will work way quicker than nutrical. Rub it under the tongue and on the gums for faster absorbtion. It doesn't absorb as quickly when it goes down the throat. Once the puppy bounces back (usually back to normal, make sure they are warm and get some type of protein).. Then I would follow up with nutrical (or dyne) 3 times a day for 1-2wks.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  4 года назад +3

      D Babies thanks for your input. I’ve had excellent results with nutrical and karo syrup alike. Nutrical is thicker than karo syrup and tends to stay in their mouth longer and absorbs through the gums too. Are you a breeder?

    • @dbabies82
      @dbabies82 4 года назад +4

      @@SweetiePiePets Yeap, I'm a breeder. I breed Yorkies. I've had many tinies.. One of my studs is 1.9lbs full grown from my breeding, and his sister was only 8oz at 12wks old.. In the last 2yrs, I have produced 4 tinies that stayed less than 2lbs full grown. I don't breed for the size (their parents are 4-5lbs) but the lines are super tiny, so they pop up every litter.
      Nutrical is mainly a vitamin supplement but does have corn syrup in it, so there is sugar in it that helps against hypoglycemia. But with regular Karo syrup (or another syrup), it's pure sugar, so it will bring them back way quicker than Nutrical. That will take a bit longer to absorb. And I know it sounds weird, but it's like when drug addicts rub drugs against their gums and under their tongue for a faster high... you rub the Karo (or nutrical, if that's your preference) on the gums/under the tongue area and you will see a super quick response.
      I don't do nutrical anymore, because not all of my pups took to it, and I would go through it too fast. I use Dyne now, which is a sweeter, more liquid like version of Nutrical. The dogs are way more addicted to it, too. lol I pour a little over their food, and they will just lick it off, and will spend their entire time trying to find any drop they might have missed.

      hello sir can I ask the interval of putting the karo syrup in their gums

    • @mamak4214
      @mamak4214 Год назад +1

      I use Karo. Recommended by our vet and local animal hospital for toy breeds. Massage some into their gums everyday, or put 2 tablespoons a day in their water bowl. You can also massage right into their gums during an episode just like this. Works wonders. Nutrical doesn't come close to how fast karo works for emergencies.

    Thank you for this video!! I have a 16 yr old Yorkie, had her first and very bad episode last night. One of the most heartbreaking and scary things to watch. We thought she was just dying from being so old. she couldn’t hold her head up, having seizures, breathing was very shallow, and her heart rate was really low. I thought maybe her sugar is low and gave her some honey. After a few minutes she was finally able to stand up on her own and look around at us. Since then I’ve been trying to figure out what was wrong with her and I seen your video and it’s exactly how she looked.

      I hope your sweetie pie is doing better. It’s so hard to watch them struggle with health problems as they age. I wanted to add that corn syrup, honey, and pancake syrup ( NOT SUGAR FREE) will work. I feel that if you have a toy sized dog or puppy it would be wise to invest in a glucose meter and quality lancing device. Even if they are not conscious they can absorb sugar through their gums. You will put your sugary substance on their gums, repeating and testing Blood Glucose , every 15 minutes, until the dog is acting normally and glucose levels are at or close to 100. At that point you will want to feed them a peanut butter sandwich appropriate for the size of the dog ( regular peanut butter, not sugar free) and some cooked chicken breast. The sandwich will help to rise the glucose and the protein will help keep glucose levels risen. Test blood glucose again every 30 minutes for the next hour. Then test again before you go to bed or leave the dog alone to make sure glucose is within safe limits. Normal dog glucose runs between 62 and 125. Ideal is 80< > 125 blood glucose.

    this literally saved one of my 2-day-old pups. he was having sort of seizures, where his whole body would tense up (like a rock) for a few seconds. the longest was about 15 seconds. he wasnt even breathing. I thought he was dying (he was), then he would fall completely limp, exhausted from the seizure i imagine. after i watched this, i came to the conclusion that he wasnt eating enough (milk), so we *immediately* started "forcing" him to latch and drink from the mother, we put aside 2.5hrs just for this. he finally latched on by himself after placing his mouth to the tit. im taking a break now but we will be heading back. he is still recuperating, alive because of this video. i wrote all this so that if something like this happens to a dog owner, they may learn and save their puppy. once again, my pup is only almost 48hrs old. you can do this.

    My 4 month old shitzu was having seizures and afterwards she would stay like the pup in the video and I went and looked for the product you used but there wasn’t any, I bought the ultra mega high calorie booster as soon as I gave her some I saw a change 20 mins later, I also used sentry calming ointment for dogs because she would stress out really bad, I also gave her pedialite because she couldn’t eat or drink water for 2 days, ibuprofen for children because she was hot even after a shower and I got her the pet naturals calming chews so she can sleep well at night, she was basically dead and all of that lifted her up, she’s eating on her own now and drinking water. So thank you so much, Im so glad I came across this video. 😊

    Hello we have a 4 year old Pomeranian and Chihuahua mix, A month ago he had a seizure in the morning when we woke him up to go to work. He did nearly the exact same thing that puppy is doing now in the video but he did Pee himself and drool. We freaked out because this is never happened before took him to the vet the next day, and the vet had ruled it as a seizure. We are taking him for a blood test and it came back clean. Next step would be to get an MRI for $3000 we don’t have. He went a month after that incident without a seizure and about a week ago now he has had One a day at least for the last five days usually always when he wakes up from sleeping. We have been giving him VET CBD oil he hopes to not have to use prescription medication but it does not seem to be doing much. Could low blood sugar be at hand? Our little boy really doesn’t eat that much but his appetite does seem a lot different. Thank you for the video!

    Will a puppy cry if a puppy has low blood sugar? Does it cause pain? Does low blood sugar cause low platelets?
    My puppy has been sick since Nov. We have been crying a lot. She has seen 6 different doctors in two different hospitals...they can not find anything wrong with her. She has been thru many tests, blood work, xrays, even a very expensive CT scan...everything negative.
    They did discover she has low blood sugar and low platelets. But, no doctor has been able to pinpoint why her platelets are low...what is causing that.
    We miss our sweet 3 lb puppy who is 9 months old TODAY, but she is not with us to celebrate. We live in GA, I had to fly my puppy to UT (I flew with my puppy, dropped her off and turned around immediately and went back home to GA). My puppy is there to see another doctor to see if they can discover what is wrong. I left her there with a friend of mine, a breeder.
    I appreciate your answering my questions if you know the answers. We are so worried for our baby girl.

    • @SweetiePiePets

      CMV Robison sometimes a puppy will cry when they have low blood sugar but not always. In your puppies case it doesn’t sound to me like low blood sugar because normally low blood sugar worsens until they are completely catatonic like this puppy was in my video. Have the vets found anything wrong with her? Also what food is she eating?

    Hello! I have a six week old puppy who refuses to eat if it isn’t directly from her mama. Mother dog is starting to lose interest in pups ever since they grew teeth, so I have decided to wean them off by feeding them kibble soaked in formula or wet food. All the puppies have no issue eating from bowl but this puppy does struggle. However, when it is directly from mom she eats the most. She is at a very good weight too so I know it isn’t that she is sick. She has reached all the milestones before her litter mates except for the feeding transition. I have bought her nutrical and gave it to her as the instructions indicated, but I still wonder about specifics. The instructions say 1/4 TSP for every 10 pounds. If the puppy is under 4 pounds do I still give them the 1/4? I can’t seem to find the answers ANYWHERE despite searching it up everywhere. I wonder why they don’t specify it anywhere or why anyone else hasn’t had this question…

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn’t give her Nutrical unless she needs it. As long as she’s eating and has energy, she doesn’t need the extra calories from the Nutrical. If she goes all day refusing to eat and you can’t coax her to eat any dinner either, then just before bedtime I would give her a small dollop of Nutrical. I just give a fingertip full (about the size of a regular pencil eraser). You don’t earn the opposite to happen and her to become hyperglycemia which happens when their blood sugar goes too high.
      If she’s healthy, she should start eating solid food on her own. Since she does when it’s from moma, I suspect it’s more of a spoiled trait from a smart process who knows she can eventually get her mama to give her food 😅
      Wishing her the very best

      @hellojane6795 2 года назад

      @@SweetiePiePets Thank you so much for this, I had no idea about hyperglycemia! Scary stuff! What happens if that were to happen? I’m going to stop giving it to her unless I see she’s not eating anything, I’d just like to know the risk. And yeah, she’s a little spoiled haha. Hopefully she gets the hang of eating by herself soon.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  3 года назад

      Love blood sugar occurred when your puppy hasn’t consumed enough calories to keep their blood sugar level stable. It can happen very quickly so owners of small dogs need to monitor food intake closely. Small puppies should eat a little food every 3-4 hours, even through the night.

With all the experience I have seen from your videos I will purchase the product you showed (hopefully available here in Scotland). I cannot thank you enough for making your viewers aware of this, such specific details of signs, and what to immediately do, with hope. I hope no one comments negatively on this - why did you take time out to video? why did you show something that is SO [which it CERTAINLY isn’t] graphic? To any of you thinking that, think again. • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  Год назад

      The tinies are more prone to hypoglycemia simply because they do not carry enough energy on their frame to sustain them for hours at a time without eating. That’s why it’s important to feed them small meals often throughout the day. So long as yours is a good eater and eats every few hours, he should be fine and not get hypoglycemia. But sometimes when they are stressed, their appetite is repressed and they don’t eat enough to sustain themselves. Yes, I recommend have a Nutrical with you just in case because it’s amazing how quickly they can go from seemingly normal to suddenly having hypoglycemia. I just had one yesterday.

Hopefully it never happens again though. Glad she's OK. hugs

    I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with my sisters 3 year old apple head chihuahua (she's only had for 4 months) and I'm leaning towards this, however are there lessor forms of this? When the dog is eating he tends to get tired as well as timid after eating and hides out in his basket. Even after giving the dog treats. Then he randomly goes through bouts every week or so where he's sick doesn't eat and may throw up as well. My sister has taken it to the vets twice, I'm not sure what exactly is checked (I think the first time they did an xray of his stomach), but I'm certain the vet is missing something. The dog typically has loose stools. He goes through periods of time were he's sick and won't eat and other times where the dog is constantly hungry and can't be satiated (and even eats his own poop, which apparently isn't overly uncommon?)
    This is possibly unrelated, but particularly when he goes outside at night, he's hesitant to come back inside. He looks at us like he's no longer familiar with us and not sure if he can trust us (none of us have ever yelled at or mistreated him, but it's possible his previous owners did?). Or maybe it's his vision and he's trying to make us out. He goes through constant bouts of being comfortable and being afraid. He'll come on the couch with me and sit on my lap and then shortly thereafter he'll be timid and hesitant of whether or not he trusts me or my sister or my dad. He spends most of the time hiding in his basket. It may simply have something to do with the bred or perhaps his past (which we don't have any insight to)? But aside from that there's something health wise that isn't right. he'll be on the couch with me in an air conditioned house and without exercise or anything will open his mouth and go into an unusual pant. The dog will also have bouts of coughing. I don't understand why the vet comes up empty.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  9 месяцев назад

      So sorry to hear about his struggles. Sounds to me like he’s in pain. I would have the vet check his stool for parasites too. Parasites such as coccidia and Giardia can upset the stomach and mess with their appetite. Best of luck to him and to you guys 🙏🏻

If she's a newborn, she's too young for Nutri-Cal and needs only mama's milk or milk replacement from a bottle. You can also tube feed if she won't nurse or take a bottle. Newborns can't go longer than a few hours without milk. Good luck to you and your sweetie pie!

      Sheila Plaza no problem. Nutrical is basically a high sugar paste. You can use syrup or honey in a similar fashion. Keep in mind the baby needs to get her calories from healthy food. The sugar is just in case she doesn’t eat enough food to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Congratulations on your new baby. 😍

      Sheila Plaza it’s common for them to not want to eat solid food. So I recommend to chop up some boiled chicken into tiny pieces, put them on a plate, put the plate on the floor and then YOU get down on the floor with your head by the plate and baby talk the puppies. I’m not sure if that works with Shih Tzu puppies but it works almost every time with shy chihuahuas who are too scared to eat.

      Hi Alicia Hayhope I'm sorry to hear that your little sweetie pie is having these health concerns. What you describe might be more serious than low blood sugar. I would take her to your trusted veterinarian asap. Best of luck 😟🙏🏻

    OMG earlier today I was so scared because I think my dog ate my pill (Metformin 1000mg) I lost from my pocket. My sis said it looked like a seizure, while we were on FaceTime. At first I thought she was sneezing constantly but I seen her two front arms kind of crippled and she was shaking but stiff.. no foam came out her mouth.

      That sounds very scary. Is she better now? If she ate your medicine she probably needs to go to the emergency room.

    Where do you get this gel at exactly? I have a dog that's a Jack Russell Chihuahua and Boston terrier mix, and he has had one episode like this before his sugar had dropped so we got him out of it but I need to know where we get the gel at so that I can get it for him just in case. Thanks I appreciate it.

    Is this the same thing as when the newborn gets really stiff and hard
    My boxer had 10 puppy’s and so far 2 ended up not making it and one is having trouble sucking on the mom’s milk
    One of the one’s that didn’t make it got stiff so I was winding if this would help the 3rd one if it ever got stiff
    Their all 3 days old

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  4 года назад +2

      FluxnGaming I’m so sorry to hear about your babies who didn’t make it. It’s difficult to know for sure why the baby got stiff but it could likely have been low blood sugar, yes. Newborns must latch on to mammas milk constantly and if they miss even one or two feedings, that can be deadly. Sometimes when there are so many in a litter, the weaker ones need assistance latching on. It’s instinctual for all of the babies to fight for the nipple (I like to call it the faucet) and generally a mamma only had 6 or 8 of those faucets. So with 10 babies, there would always be a few babies left without access which makes it easy to miss a feeding. Missing a feeding makes the baby even weaker and therefore much more like to miss the next feeding as they won’t be able to compete with their stronger siblings. I recommend to remove the strong babies (temporarily) and keep them warm in a separated container while you assist the weaker babies to latch on. Each baby needs a hearty 10-15 minute suckle session every hour or 2! Generally if you can get the newborns thriving within the first three days, they won’t need as much help after that. Sometimes it’s a sleepless job. Congratulations on your sweetie pies 😍

      Sweetie Pie Pets thank you and I gave her the same supplement as you did and she started moving more but after a while she will go back to being limped. I haves moved the other ones every so often I also help her get milk even tho she doesn’t want to keep her head up. Is it ok to give her puppy formula for newborns and after a while can I give her the supplement

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  4 года назад +1

      FluxnGaming if she won’t latch on by herself you’ll have to help. They must drink vigorously. I tiny attempt won’t be enough to sustain her. Yes I recommend to start her on formulas immediately and continue trying to get her to latch on. Good luck 🙏🏻

    Does this only happen to puppies? Also, does it only happen when they don’t eat or can it happen randomly?

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  4 года назад

      Mongooseodon it’s most prevalent in puppies but even adults can have it. It happens if they go too long without eating. Chihuahuas are a small dog and they don’t carry enough energy on their frame to sustain them for a long time span. They have to eat small meals often throughout the day, especially as puppies 🐶❤️

    I have a 5 year old teacup yorkie that just started having low sugar seizures, is it best to sprinkle a little sugar in his kibble? Also can I mix pedialyte with water for him to drink?

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  4 года назад

      pammish11 I’m so sorry to hear about your sweetie pie. So yes, pedialyte is safe and he can drink that any time. I wouldn’t put sugar in his food though. If he is eating often enough then his blood sugar should be stable so It’s important to figure out why he has suddenly begin getting low blood sugar and hopefully be able to fix the problem. Either the food he’s currently eating does not have the right nutritional balance for him, or possibly he has decided he doesn’t like the taste of it and simply isn’t eating enough. The NutriCal is perfect as a quick fix to raise their blood sugar when it dips dangerously low but really it shouldn’t need to be a part of his every day adult diet. NutriCal works quickly - depending how low his blood sugar dips, it should be back within the normal range within an hour or 2 after receiving the Nutrical. But once their sugar levels are stable, it’s important they get their nutrition from a healthy kibble.
      Have you tried Life’s Abundance? I recommend you try him on this one for a few months and see if his blood sugar stabilizes on it’s own. If so, you can stop worrying about adding sugar in his diet: lifesabundance.com/Pets/Puppy/PuppyFoodLargeBreed.aspx?realname=20614715&cat=0&hdr=&Ath=False&crt=0&Category=LargeBreedPuppyFood_v11(Pet_Base)&Sku=401306
