Philmont Scout Ranch

- I spent the last week in New Mexico at a place called Philmont Scout Ranch. There isn't much in the way of restaurants, and definitely no fast food, so I wanted to explain why I changed the name of the channel.
Thousands of people visit this place every year to take backpacking trips through the mountains and attend courses, but for me, there is a little more to it than that. It is where I grew up.
I have lived in a lot of places in my life, but this is the only place that feels like it has permanently held onto a little piece of me. I can go and visit it for a little while, but I can never fully get it back. Развлечения
Thank YOU for that insight.
Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed watching.
Thank you for watching.
This made me smile so much. Just last month I returned home for the last time from my third summer working as a seasonal employee at Philmont. There is no place on earth I would rather be then that no so little ranch out in New Mexico. And oh boy, I feel you when it comes to the food there. I ate that same dining hall food for three summers in a row (9 months) with little to no changes in the menu. Even though the food was not the greatest part of me still craves it because it reminds me of HOmE.
That's beautiful. I grew up there a little bit. We moved there when I was 7 and left when I was 12. I've only been back twice since 2000, and this last time was deeply impactful. It's a glorious place.
Top 10 score. Cool vid
Thank you. I really liked making this one. The end makes me all emotional.
@@brianmarkgriffin yeah you can tell the place means a lot to you
I usually watch your food videos but had no idea your Philmont ties. Did an initial trek in 2013, did the Rayado expedition in 2016 and was a Ranger in 2017. Amazing memories and people.
That's awesome. I'm glad to hear that. I can't remember what I said in this video, but I lived there from 1995-2000. It's a wonderful place. I'm glad you found this.
Gave me a serious case of the feels… 😢 Good job sir!
I appreciate that. Thank you.
Hey man, been watching you for a while now I know your gonna blow up ⬆️
You should sue Fox for copyright infringement on your name, I can't believe they compared you to a dog
As a former Scout & leader, glad we could be part of your “therapy” here, definitely “96”! I live in Central Cali and have been enjoying & subscribed to your slightly different channel for awhile now. Thanks, “96” again.
Thank you for saying that. I really appreciate it.
I haven’t been there. 2 stars.
If I didn’t rate you enough before, I definitely do now even more!
I actually never made that connection with family guy until just now. That said, you were definitely the type of kid who fed the ponies right in front of the sign that said not to
I live in South Dakota it’s like that
Damn I miss this place. So cool to see you make a video about Philmont!
I'm glad you liked it. It's the only place I've ever lived that truly left an impression on me. It may just be the lack of oxygen.
Brian, as usual this was a really cool video. My best friend Will was in scouts, and he passed away two years ago when we both were 21. He went to Philmont in high school and it always sounded amazing. He was just a teenager at the time he went on his Philmont trip and also from Minnesota, so I'm going to guess you two probably never crossed paths.
A classmate of ours who did scouts with Will went to Philmont recently and spread some of his ashes at a peak of a nearby hike (maybe the same one you included in this video, I'll check up on that).
I'll definitely show this video to Will's parents. As always, thanks for the great content man. This one really meant a lot to me.
That is both heartbreaking and wonderful. Thank you for telling me that. I hadn't been there in 17 years, and not since 2000 before that, so it's unlikely. However, he and I have a shared experience that has a way of changing you somehow. I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope you find yourself there someday, if you are interested.
I really love your storytelling ability, it seems like it comes to you so effortlessly.
You stirred up some intense nostalgia from my trip to Philmont 15 years ago while simultaneously making me oddly jealous of your own even deeper nostalgia.
Thank you for saying that. I worked there in 2006, but I hadn't been back to really explore in a little over two decades. There were so many things that I had forgotten that came back right away. There were normal things like the smells when it rains, or this sage sort of thing that's all over the place.
But what really struck me was the textures of things. Doors that I remembered from when I was 10 years old, and how they felt and sounded. I got back to Washington last night, and I still sort of feel like I'm there.
@@brianmarkgriffin there you go again with that vivid story telling 😄. And I just missed you, I was there in 2007.
Did you work there, or were you there for a trek?
@@brianmarkgriffin I was there for a trek. And I was VERY adamant about going. Somebody along the way did a bad job of explaining what exactly Philmont was and I thought we would be hiking through the desert sweating and trying to scrounge for water. Instead what I got was one of the coolest (pun intended) most unique experiences of my entire life.
Hey, I know this guy!
PENCILS!
Two for a nickel!
is your name actually brian griffin🤣that’s hilarious
It's not quite like being named Homer Simpson, but it's close.
Wait… did I miss the part where you said why you lived at philmont as a kid?
I don't remember if I actually said it or not. My dad ran the Training Center, so I lived there year-round from 8-13. Our house was about half a mile from the Villa. Most days, I would walk from my house to the dining hall at PTC for lunch. I would go to cobbler nights at Tent City. Opening and closing ceremonies. We had a big yard, but we would go meet up with friends on the Villa lawn to play baseball, or just climb a tree or whatever. As a result, I have more of an affinity for that side of the road than I do for Camping Headquarters, or the backcountry. It was my neighborhood.
Thank you for watching.
@@brianmarkgriffin what a cool way to grow up
Cool for sure, but I had a different feeling about the place for a long time. Until this trip you just watched, actually. It's beautiful, and I had very unique experiences, but when you're that age, you're really craving socialization. Philmont is hours away from anything, and it really becomes your universe. When I moved here when I was 13, things like grocery stores that sell CDs blew my mind. Fresh produce. Best Buy. Neighbors my age.
I think my time there made me weird, honestly. In a good way. I watched a lot of baseball. I watched a lot of 90s sitcoms. Seinfeld shaped my entire personality. But going back there last summer made me realize that it had always held on to a piece of me, and I didn't even know it was missing. It was a phenomenal experience.
