  • So I went to a store today and everything was fine until I came out and started the car. The climate control system was on but wasn't blowing any air at all. My wife took my car once or twice and mentioned this problem but since it didn't happen to me, I just figured my car didn't like my wife driving it so it gave her problems :)
Well, that turned out to not be the case as it finally happened to me, so I decided it was time to take a look at this blower motor to see if there's anything that can be done to salvage it or if I needed to replace it. I just assumed that it needed to be replaced so this was just to take it apart and take a look at how it works, but after putting it back in it started working and has been working since then. I'm not sure if it'll continue to work, and I already made peace with the fact that I'll have to replace it sometime soon, but as long as it keeps working I'll keep using it.
Thank you for joining me, and if you like the video or are able to kill a few minutes from watching it, please don't forget to hit the LIKE button and SUBSCRIBE to my channel, and please hit that BELL button since I have some stuff coming up, like I just found out I may not have to replace the coil pack on my V12 SL600 but may be able to get away with a much cheaper (almost free) hack. With my luck I doubt it'll work, but it's definitely worth a try. Thanks for joining me and I'll see you on the next one!

I just got done doing mine and I always take a pick with a 90 degree end on it and I pull on the brush wire a little in the upwards direction while wearing a headlamp flashlight and look down in there to see how far the wire is from the bottom end of the slot. I spray some contact cleaner or some light silicone lube in the brush assembly where the spring is and check that the brush is not stuck and can float freely in the brush holder. I try to pull up on the wire where the slot is so the brush can wear all the way to its end without the wire hitting the end of the slot. As for the shaft bearings I turn the blower so the shaft is in the vertical position and use some regular motor oil and shoot a few drops on the shaft so it runs down into the bearing, I do this to both sides and i blow the fan wheels with some compressed air and get it spinning fast. Lastly I spin the fan by hand to see if its nice and free or still stiff. If its stiff add more lube and keep it going a little longer and recheck. Once done depending on just how much brush carbon you have left, this alone will buy you another 6 months to a year of use. Then the next time it acts up in any way you can just order the new assembly cheap on ebay and replace it. Sure beats banging on the bottom of the dash! The fan assembly runs around $80 for a made in China copy or $180 for a new BEHR original equipment quality one. Remember the assembly is held in place with 5 T20 torx screws and can be easily taken out with a T20 screw driver. Just use a small mirror to see where the screws are or take a good look at the replacement part pictures to see the locations. Good luck to all and thanks to Auto Addict for making this video for all to see. Even if our videos are not perfect, pictures and video sure help people see whats going on! Thank You!

@@autoaddict3994 Thanks for the video. Since it's been almost a year since you posted, how's it been working? Is it still going or did you need to replace it? I'm about to tackle mine but getting down into the footwell seems like a real chore! I've done the banging on the bottom of the dash thing which does work, but it always goes off intermittently now and then. Also, thanks to Robert Amat for his comments as well. I'll follow his tips once I get the blower motor out.

I have the same problem after I changed the 'Change over Valve'. Let me know if you are able to solve it and what you did. Thanks

Good luck with your project. After taking the blower motor out and spraying it with the specialty WD40 lube, it started working like a charm and has been working ever since. I guess my blower was going bad, and if (when) it starts to act up again, I'll just replace it. I am happy however that it started working like new from just spraying it with some lube. I wonder how much the dealer would've charged me to just take a look at it :)

Portuguese translation: It's always good to try, I do the same with mine
We have to keep trying, right? Also, it's still working! Can you believe that? Super happy I tried this instead of just replacing the part. I was ready to replace it, but thought why not see what's really going on, and I'm glad I did!

Next time just smack the dash underneath the blower it'll come back for another couple months if you're lucky, brushes are going out you'll need a new one just buy a cheap after-market one for 80 bucks on eBay

Thanks for the tip! After spraying it down, it actually never gave me any issues after that and it's been months! Happy about that. I know I'm going to have to get a new one at some point, but I'm not a huge fan of putting after-market parts in my German cars. It's just my preference, depending on the price difference for the OEM one, but I don't think they're that expensive

@@autoaddict3994 after market prices are immensely cheaper than OEM and sometimes better than OEM a lot of German engineers get cheap labor out of Hong Kong just another friendly FYI I only use aftermarket because OEM prices are ridiculous and I've had a 99% success with them. I use ebay by the way.

Good to know the other side of that coin. I use exclusively aftermarket parts on my American truck since I don't really care, but I personally have had problems with using AM parts on my German cars, and have read some horror stories from others, so that makes me kind of scared to even try, especially anything electronic, which a blower motor is. Just the way I'm leaning these days, but who knows
