Early 1960s, In my early 20's, I worked a spell in Don Jones' BSA shop in South San Gabriel. Gary and Dewayne at that time were about 11 and 13 years old. I can vouch for Gary's stories from the old shop. Don was an extraordinary guy, always fun to be around and he treated me well.
Gary and DeWayne are the reason I got into Motocross. Seen them at Indian Dunes one weekend with my Dad as spectators. And told my Dad that's what I wanted to do. I'm 63 now and still ride MX.
Great interview I was lucky as a kid back in the 80s use to go to their shop in walnut they had a great pre mix for 2 strokes that was the good stuff and smelled rad and ran crisp👍
Great episode guys! Really like how you guys are diving into the history of the sport. Tons of great stories you never get to hear anymore. Also Alex Martin and Jeremy Martin repeated the record at Glen Helen in 2016.
Every show is as good or better then the one before. Watching pings face when Jones said we invented that was hilarious. Keep putting old champions on cause they have so many real life stories!!
Dude I used to hang with Dwayne.. man oh man he had the best sayings and stories.. I wonder what happened to his can-am. He also had a zcar I wish i could buy.. miss that guy
I was there in 1972 when Gary won Unadilla. As a result, I bought a 1973 Elsinore. It was cool to hear the story from Gary about the "Green Stripe" on the gas tank.
Ping you guys are absolutely killing it! Don't change a thing, just keep rolling out the shows! I do have to ask though, did you seriously not know who Gary and Hank Scott are??
I was lucky enough to be standing right next to Dwayne Jones, Gary's brother, when he started hucking rocks at Pierre Karsmakers at the Carnegie Trans AMA race. I had no idea at the time that I was spectating amidst true Motocross history.
I met Dwayne back in 96.. I also met his son and brother.. the dad was a beast at 70 years old.. I was so sad to find out Dwayne passed a few years ago. He did my suspension on my bike.. I even got him his first stickers.. miss that guy. I was so lucky to know him
Those brothers have the best stories.. I would sit in Dwayne's garage and listen to him talk about old times while supervision was on in the background. Shit I was there when he built that 250 and 500cc it bike fir cycle world.. fuck I miss that guy
Another great episode. As for Brayton... the older you get, the better you get, AND.. .he stays on the Sunshine Coast... right near my hometown area, and he can see in the horizon the area I do hard core GNCC style riding down there!
Man all these episodes are just something else.. but I have to ask Ping knows so damn much and just as interesting to hear talk, when are you gana get your episode out there!?!? All in favor please like!!
Wow, love that interview. I was so lucky be on the starting line at Unadilla 1968 next to Gary Jones and his brother. How many ever did the 3 - 20 minutes motos? With a rubber band and bike in neutral with your hand on your head.
Listened a majority of these interviews... the old timers/ mechanics make for some of the best interviews. Should have Mr. Jones on with a few guys from his era. Groundbreakers round table.
It would be great to get the ol jammer, jimmy weinert on the show. Im sure he's got some great stories of racing with the old school guys....and also what it was like to face the upcoming new talents in mx like hurricane hannah...
#Salute to our elders and pioneers of our great sport. The old timers have so much personality. And it was all of them that had personality. Then by the 70's it was only Bob Hannah and Jimmy Wienert and in the 80's it was only Ricky Johnson, Ron Lechien and Micky Dymond, by the 90's it wan't really "Personality" as much as party and trouble although the likes of Jeff Matiasevich, Larry Ward, Jeff Emig, Mike Craig will be idolized forever. Jeff Stanton, Mike LaRocco (one of my favorites), Jean-Michel Bayle (My 2nd favorite rider of all time), Damon Bradshaw all they way through Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey were freaking boring boring boring robots. I love the freshness of Jason Anderson, Justin Bogle and Colt Nichols in these times.
While we watched old movies on a Saturday night on speed vision. He would tell me factory's would build a bike and his dad would say nope.. tear bike apart and build it his way and basically say heres how a dirt bike should be.. dude I have so many stories about Dwayne.. he was my friend
Ok one more thing this vid is tripping me out. So much history. Dwayne explained the Chevron 2 stroke oil to me also set my bike up to run 80:1 ratio .. yeah my bike was faster than my buddies new bikes.. he did all my port work. At first I was at 60:1.. dwa6would see my pipe and tell me I wasn't listening. Lol then I went fir ut and wow.. my buddies thought I was crazy for that mixture. But it worked for years never had any issues. Dwyane like to use a special mix for his shock rebuilding it was STP engine lube.. or something. . Anyone who really knew Dwayne knows what I'm talking about. Man I only have one regret.. not spending more time in the alley in Pomona
Great interesting interview 'I've watched it several times now(some more 1970's rider interviews would be good)it's amazing how many bike developments came from the Jones's. Pingree is a really good guy' but I disagree with him saying the green on the early elsinores looked horrible ' I think the green on silver looks real good'but I realize green isn't for everyone. It's interesting that Gary said burt Munro got his car off the Jones's 'and built his bike trailer at their workshop. That means there wasn't a mexican car salesman that got freaked out from burt driving on the wrong side of the road. Hollywood inaccuracies ' who would have thought🤔
WT asked Gary to talk about his life in Motocross, and guess what? He talked about his life, family, friends and enemies in Motocross. I race against Gary occasionally and when we hang out in the pits, he doesn't blather on about himself. But if you ask him a question, he gives an honest and comprehensive answer.

Gary Jones has lived a legendary life. Great Show!

GARY JONES & HIS BROTHER & FAMILY ARE THE BEST...FROM ONE WHO KNOWS...USED TO HANG OUT AT THE SHOP IN WALNUT.

Yup. I remember the (3) 20s. By the time I made Pro...1977....it was up to the (2) 45s.
Listened a majority of these interviews... the old timers/ mechanics make for some of the best interviews. Should have Mr. Jones on with a few guys from his era. Groundbreakers round table.

I love the home brewed factory bike that the factory’s copied! Rocket welding!

Better ever show!
OG
Did his dad invent the wheel as well?! Finally someone who likes to talk about himself more than grant
Amen
Gary was only stating facts. I dont see gl as being full of himself at all.
