Besides being fascinating and bringing back great memories, these interviews have historical value. They will help future generations understand how MX evolved in America. Specific to Brian, what a behind-the-scenes legend! How many mechanics can claim not just one but several championships?! He was dedicated to the point of motivating his riders to train, training with them, and even moving in with them. I was very curious to know how his wife and daughter dealt with his moving in with his riders, unless she and later their daughter moved in also, which i doubt. I especially appreciate the fact that Ping & Grant let their guests talk without hurrying them up. Brian’s honest and open insight about Bob’s determination, the need to motivate RJ somewhat, his opinion of it being a mistake by RJ for moving Stanton in, his vivid recount of Bradshaw’s lost race and championship in ‘92, candid feedback about Mike Craig and even “The Man” were very interesting for those of us who livedthrough it, and I would think those who did not but are curious. I would love to see interviews with other significant participants-riders, mechanics, team managers, etc-from American MX’s golden age, i.e. 1960s and 1970s.
The 23 inch tire was called the " claw action" which was not only on the 1979 cr 125 'but also on 79 and 80 xr 250 and xr 500's. I think I heard warren reid say in a recent interview that he liked the big front wheel as far as handling was concerned. I remember dirt bike magazine had an article about the 79 cr125 and how the power was down compared to the yz's kx's and rm's. Dirt bike mag contributor and test rider jim connelly was experimenting with that cr 125 and made his one run much stronger by turning down the taper on the carburetor needle. I think he may have Also fitted a 21 inch front wheel. Where would you get a 23 inch replacement tire nowadays?.
Craig had some issues, but I think Loonis is a dirtbag. He's filthy, so of course he didn't want to wash the bikes...look at him! That's laziness on his part, and I was glad to see him finally fired. Yes, Craig could've won more races, but to heap that pressure on him that he's the next Damon for Yamaha was ridiculous. Craig should've trained more than he did, absolutely. I do believe him over Loonis though
I don't care for Brian , how dare you put down Mike and I've heard other stories . I've watched every whiskey throttle show David has done at least 3 times . I didn't make it through this one . I appreciate all you have done here ping . You are the goat to me for all your time you put into this sport.
Marty Tripes won the first year on a Yamaha he went 2-2-2 for 1st overall and the second year with Honda won the overall again, good show I love all the good old information that this man has experienced.
Went to the California 500 opening race at Ontario Motor Speed Way. Watched Evil Knevil jump there. Rode a stingray for 100 miles at same venue for March of dimes. Went with Ontario Honda for road racing there. And saw Cal Jam 1 there. Now 62 racing Motocross as much as I can in Texas. Great show
Another great show featuring a guest most of us fans probably hadn't heard of, but who is such a huge part of the history of the sport. Great guest, and it's obvious you guys did your homework.
Since most riders today think Jeremy McGrath has invented the motorcycle its not surprising to me that most listening to this show hasn't heard of Brian Luniss
One of the most amazing interviews ever! None of this Candy coated stuff! Also cool to hear that he was a former District 17 guy with the Slo Pokes! That was were I did the majority of my racing as well. Over 4 hours but well worth it!
Great interview with Brian. But Ping's youth with these older guys really shows. Didn't know that Brad Lackey rode for Honda? Wow! Still an awesome interview, 4 hours wasn't enough!
Yeah not knowing that lackey rode for honda sort of surprise me to' but I think you have to put that down to pingree being younger. I likely wouldn't be aware what bikes the scrambles stars rode in the 1960's.
Thanks for reminding me Mr.Lunniss is a former District 17 Fast Boys From Illinois illumni👍 He even gave his club "Slo-Pokes MC" a shoutout-ties together for me pictures of pro riders like Hannah and others riding at Maplehurst back in the day. Would've loved to hear his take on the 77' national and subsequent Honda testing at Keithsburg, Illinois.
Funny but true story The day Damon lost the title. After the race he went to the go kart track by Anaheim ,he was with two other guys . He was joking around and having fun I couldn’t believe He wasn’t devastated . That’s why he wasn’t at the Yamaha dinner.
Interesting. An old friends' father was a LRRP with the 11th ACR in Vietnam and served for a time under George Patton Jr. in his Aero Rifle Platoon. The best story he told of that ordeal was the time Patton was buzzing around overhead in an OH-6 and carelessly firing a grenade launcher down into the firefight they were in. He said they radioed that they were going to shoot him the f**k down if he didn't stop. So I guess he stopped lol. He also said the guy was nuts. OK, back to the show.... :D
I get it. Decoster, Craig and Bumblebee gave the 3 thumbs down. By far the best interview I've read or watched. I'm also pretty sure Brian never had a bike mechanical DNF. Lunniss is no idiot.
Great show guys, keep up the good work 👍 just one question would it help the USA team if the monster cup was later in the year so they could do the motocross of Nations ? 🤔
My mechanic was like lunnis always putting pressure on me. It's easier for me to ride when I don't care. I quit trying be a racer just ride for fun. Just let the rider ride wow.
@@JosephDredd31 I think he's the biggest stand out as far as great title wins and chrisma. I looked up to him when I was a kid racing too. Whisky Trottle should offer to interviw him at his house. Don't pay him $10k unless it's at Daytona Speedway, otherwise talk him down on his appearance fee or do a twofer. Get someone like Weinert and Hannah both at the same interview. It's not like Hannah is hurting for green backs. Did you know that Bob Hannah spelled backward is still Bob Hannah. Never saw that before. He is special in a lot of ways.
Man, how many people wanted to beat him up after they watched this? I'm sure Christian Craig was bummed after he saw this. Roger don't give a fuck. Lol
There are drugs involved in racing...imo. rocsen was talking SUPER fast all day, and all the sudden isn't sick anymore? Did Eli have a test to take after the race?🤔
Jim Weatherred I dunno is this why Tomac is so quick one week and just ordinary another week, not wanting to do amXDNs overseas, avoid having it in the system before testing, this is how they did it for so long in cycling as well as blood transfusions and all sorts of sophisticated ways, for years I didn’t want to believe it was happening but it was and well look back to now and the truth will come out, who was or wasn’t. Hopper admitted to doing it and says it’s happening.
Seen Brian Lunniss droped phone twice trying to click 🤘..for the record Bradshaw had to have a 3rd to win title in L.A. but.. he lost the title at Indy that year no doubt. That was the killer.
Great show. Great to hear all this history. Hate hearing Pings political views. Moto show. Please keep it that way. But Dude its America they don't have to go if they don't want to . Called freedom.
Not sure how I feel about this interview. Rick Johnson was/is the G.O.A.T to me. Thus I always liked Brian Lunniss and the work that he put in with Rick Johnson to get him those title (minus the Motocross DNF in 1988), but then I saw Brian Lunniss attitude and holier that thou mentality when with Bradshaw, Kiedrowski (which hearing Lunniss they actually still have a wonderful relationship) and Huffman. At the beginning of this video it was the same, he was laughing sounding like a dork, giving insight on Hannah and R.J. and I liked it. Then he got to his talk of Roger DeCoster, Damon Bradshaw, Mike Craig and Damien Huffman and I didn't like him, nor the interview. Even with his hate of Roger fine, but what got me steaming was him blasting Michael Ray Craig not being able to read. That is/was a family secret and for you to blast it out there for all 8,200 subcribers of The Whiskey Throttle Show after the Craig family and the entire Motocross Industry kept it a secret was not cool. How come you don't have a story attached to that of you trying to help him learn to read? How come no story of you helping him enroll in a Literacy Program? So sorry Mike, Christian, and to Mike's grandchildren for how Lunniss decided to put this out there based purely on his hatered and evil heart toward Michael. That isn't the traits of a great man in my book.
Hey he told the truth!! Remember the days when people told the truth! I thought the entire 4 hours was filled with great stories! Keep em coming your show is the best!
I'm on the fence about how I feel about Lunniss after seeing this interview. I absolutely enjoyed hearing his stories, experiences, and rider relationships. He definitely is knowledgeable and a winner. Being honest and straight forward is a good thing but when discussing individuals some things are better left unsaid. For example what did the MCraig reading ability add to this interview? Lunniss didn't mind throwing some people under the bus but wouldn't tell Jimmy Johnson's nickname. Hmmm. But I did like the interview outside of a few comments.
The young guns of MX today may not get this podcast but to all the vets this was Heavy !!!

Thanks for coming on Brian you got some great Insight on what's going on in a Rider's head
Three thumbs down? DeCoster, Mike Craig, and Damon Huffman must have watched this video.
Great show again guys!!
that was cool, thank you....now you have to get Hannah on.
Absolutely.
Fantastic! So now it’s imperative that you get Hannah on the show. You just have to.
It ain't happened yet ' looking forward to it.
"Racers are just good people." Brian is just the latest legend "Whiskey Throttle" has showcased that proves the old adage so very true.
At 58 yrs old l got the motorcycle bug in 73-74 , The most interesting interview , I've watched it twice now

Pleasure to see a new episode! Thanks dudes
Brad Lackey won his world title on Suzuki, not Kawasaki.
Well spoken awesome to hear the stories about different riders.
Came here after the Stingray show, I’d like to see Craig and Lunniss on the same show. Some heat needs to be squashed.

Nice TLD retro John Deere cap they’re Ping, looking on point as always. Brain Lunis awesome to get the other side of the seat on the show.🤙
So Mike Craig was illiterate? Mind blown.

Damon Bradshaw had a six point lead entering the L.A. Coliseum finale. He only needed to finish third if Stanton won.
Sad to hear about Jim Hale, used to work with him at Kolbe Honda back in the 70's. He was always a nice guy.
