  • A home for a couple that is learning to do less. Our clients, a couple with one foot in retirement, contacted us, explaining that they had spent two years hunting for the ideal down-size home but had never found one that entirely met their requirements. They stated that the home they had come to buy was nearly complete, but limited living spaces and a lack of connection to the garden needed to be fixed.
They requested that we surround and insert as much vegetation as possible. We really wanted to bring the outside in and buttress a little footprint with borrowed space from outside, which is a technique we frequently apply in the studio. The addition is respectful of the historic cottage at the front and wraps around a north-facing courtyard to get as much light as possible into the living rooms.
The clients shocked us with their preference for the rich and somber. This inspired the palette, and even before we finalized the blueprint, we settled on the green marble in the kitchen. This impacted much of the layout and functional requirements, and it now serves as a subdued backdrop, connecting two distinct green sections. The stone hue complements the cabinetry and adds a subtle touch to the overall design. It's an element that reveals itself and its details as you approach and interact with it. Perhaps the most unique feature is the hidden skylight below the above cabinets, which floods the backsplash with natural light and highlights the craftsmanship in the stone.
Other notable aspects are the Kraus bricks, which were a special mix for the building and expressed both internally and externally, helping to integrate the inside and outside. The bricks also conceal a sliding screen that helps filter the intense western sun while providing an excellent view of the planted backyard.Ben Scott created a stunning landscape concept that complements the architecture well. There are various connections between the architecture and landscape in this project, which we like learning about.
