Song was written in 1988! A lot longer than 24 years!

This song was fire back when it came out and it hasn’t aged a bit. Brilliant lyrics, insane guitar work, and phenomenal vocals.

The band: Cory Glover - Lead Vocals, Vernon Reid - Guitar, Muz Skillings - Bass, Will Calhoun - Drums. This song is from their debut album "VIVID" released in 1988. The won grammys in 1990 from their debut album. 2023 is the 35th anniversary of the album. They are still touring along with current bassist, Doug Wimbish. Little known fact: lead singer Cory Glover was in the 1986 movie Platoon with Charlie Sheen Willem Defoe, Tom Berenger, and an unknown Johnny Depp.

Teachers back when I went to school ... the young hip ones anyway, would use this video to teach history. Imagine sitting in a lecture about this video. A lot of interesting discussion arose. This band was known for packaging sensitive subjects so they could be easily digested by listeners. Listen to songs like "Bi" or "Open Letter to a Landlord". It didn't hurt that they were spectacular musicians either ...
... the speaker you were looking for ... the speech was from FDR.

Some say it's the politician "telling people what they want to hear". Others may interpret this as they're "listening to what people want to say".

Re American politics: you’re spitting facts. Not just talk - it’s a f*cking cyclical sh*tshow. We’re actually an oligarchy well on its way to everything worse. Segue fun fact: Living Color (and more often just Vernon Reid) would rehearse at our studio in the late ‘80’s in NYC. Cult of Personality came out in 1988 (won a Grammy). Sad how it’s still so relevant.

The first time the line is sung it is: when the mirror speaks, the reflection lies ... the second time it is sung its: when a leader speaks, that leader dies.
