As an old 96er, great to see Regiment back and tickling the top three, pushing everyone harder for the Phan vote…coming back from a near miss in dropping out of Finals to this year has been nothing short of amazing and powerful corps story, while honoring our fallen heroes at Cadets. Proud Alum! #SUTA
I marched with Josh in 2021. He is a great performer, but more importantly, he’s an amazing person and friend. Good to see him get the recognition he deserves.
I'd actually argue that BD had the loudest hornline. That opener is stunning. That being said Blue Stars and Phantom were such pleasant surprises with their sound production this year.
a lot of their staff are 2016-2019 scv marchers (one of which is my old band director who aged out with babylon lol) and it definitely shows in their sound and style. i see them and boston getting a title in the next few years.
Well that explains their mellos having that same blisteringly angry sound akin to that era of SCV. Hearing Babylon in person was a literal life changing moment lmao.
@@lobsterpokemon1376I remember watching Babylon the first time in San Antonio, and from the first impact, my immediate thought was, “yep, THAT is a JD Shaw book!” Angry, rippy mello sounds, and it was all just glorious to hear.
Everett, THIS was the show I was definitely waiting for your reaction about... much like the first time last year when BD's played "Jojo" and I immediately knew it was the show to beat (because I felt it hearkened back to their 80's identity when they WERE West Coast Jazz personified), my recognition moment for Phantom this year was the first time I heard "Fly or Die" with the bass trombone and baritone soloists, which reminded me of when I first saw Phantom '91 playing Maynard Ferguson's "Pagliacci". Although Phantom has never really lost its identity, the last two years has proven that the staff there is really teaching the kids the true meaning of "SUTA"! And yes, this WAS DEFINITELY my favorite show of the season! Keep up the great work (and do bring back Allen and Malik)!
It was an absolutely outstanding performance with on point delivery. They raised the roof. The volume of applause they drew from the audience was phenomenal. We all knew the moonlight sonata was returning, we knew the Melos were going to soar and they didn’t let us down.
After their return to Murfreesboro last season, I was incredibly eager to experience this show in person. And holy crap, they did NOT disappoint. Such a powerful and emotionally significant production. So grateful to have experienced this show. Thank you for the commentary!
Without a doubt the loudest horn line I've ever heard in years. Me and a buddy on finals night went all the way up to the nose bleeds to watch drill and Phantom was the only corps of the entire night getting their sound all the way up there, made the people sitting all the way up top losing their minds as well. They were insane
If you’re a Mello player, you’re following JD Shaw wherever he goes. Dude is just in a different STRATOSPHERE with brass, and more specifically, Mello writing.
As a Mello player, I can completely confirm this. I geeked out hard meeting JD at the Atlanta show, and watching him absolutely eat up the hornline’s performance was a joy.
If they had more people on staff to REALLY scrutinize the fine details of the drill, they could have easily beaten BD or even Boston this year. Really love this show, Phantom kicks so much a$$ when they just stick to their identity as the loud and edgy corps we know and love
seeing this show in a small stadium halfway into the season is one of the highlights of my summer! i knew then that they were going to go far this season and they did not disappoint!
I believe that DCI is at its best when Phantom is one of the activity's flag bearers. While there are tons of differences between the two, the actual show designs of Phantom the last three years remind me of how Crown approached design from 08-16
I'm a novice who doesn't really understand judging at all. I'm just a sports guy sucked into the Drum Corp world because my kids love it but IMO, from watching every bands show multiple times, I felt the Troopers show was the best at telling a story, the most fun to watch, and very engaging. So my question for you is this.... what do you think of a corp like the Troopers running a storyline for consecutive shows? Do you think it hurts them, helps them, or doesn't matter. They've announced next years show already which seems that it will end the Cowboys story. I don't know what General Effect really entails but in my mind, it's all those things I mentioned before and I felt Troopers were a top 5 show. My favorite shows this year were Troopers, Mandarin, Phantom, Crown, and Boston. Keep in mind, that's just the look and feel of the show. I though Bluecoats sound was amazing and I thought Phantom should have been 3rd...but again, i'm just a novice enjoying watching all these young adults do something amazing!
Helps and hurts. We’ve seen them do non western themed shows and they don’t do well. We see them do western shows and they at least make finals. They need to find the right balance and they’ll break out of the bottom half. Their weakness is visual, especially color guard.
Troopers do an incredible job at telling stories. But traditionally, the best corps when it comes to Storytelling is Carolina Crown. There’s a few shows to check out on that front. Carolina Crowns 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2023 shows will probably all really hit for you. As they did for most people As far as what Troop needs to do to break out of the bottom half of finals, it’s more so a staff and talent thing. Not that they aren’t talented and don’t have great staff, but there is a clear difference between them and the top 7 or so corps. Bluecoats all the way down to Mandarins have the best staff in the world, consisting of literal legends of the activity. The Cavaliers usually do as well, but they’re having some issues at the moment. I’m interested to see how the end of the Three-Quel goes for Troop. Especially since they just got rid of their visual staff, for some inexplicable reason. Phantom is also really good at telling stories, check out their shows in 2008 and 2011
@@prestonjones20013 full disclosure...my daughter joined Troopers Guard a month before the season started after being in Crossmen last year.
