    Everett, THIS was the show I was definitely waiting for your reaction about... much like the first time last year when BD's played "Jojo" and I immediately knew it was the show to beat (because I felt it hearkened back to their 80's identity when they WERE West Coast Jazz personified), my recognition moment for Phantom this year was the first time I heard "Fly or Die" with the bass trombone and baritone soloists, which reminded me of when I first saw Phantom '91 playing Maynard Ferguson's "Pagliacci". Although Phantom has never really lost its identity, the last two years has proven that the staff there is really teaching the kids the true meaning of "SUTA"! And yes, this WAS DEFINITELY my favorite show of the season! Keep up the great work (and do bring back Allen and Malik)!

  • @mikewolfrey899
    @mikewolfrey899 3 месяца назад +11

    I'm a novice who doesn't really understand judging at all. I'm just a sports guy sucked into the Drum Corp world because my kids love it but IMO, from watching every bands show multiple times, I felt the Troopers show was the best at telling a story, the most fun to watch, and very engaging. So my question for you is this.... what do you think of a corp like the Troopers running a storyline for consecutive shows? Do you think it hurts them, helps them, or doesn't matter. They've announced next years show already which seems that it will end the Cowboys story. I don't know what General Effect really entails but in my mind, it's all those things I mentioned before and I felt Troopers were a top 5 show. My favorite shows this year were Troopers, Mandarin, Phantom, Crown, and Boston. Keep in mind, that's just the look and feel of the show. I though Bluecoats sound was amazing and I thought Phantom should have been 3rd...but again, i'm just a novice enjoying watching all these young adults do something amazing!

    • @RVVDont
      @RVVDont 3 месяца назад

      Helps and hurts. We’ve seen them do non western themed shows and they don’t do well. We see them do western shows and they at least make finals.
      They need to find the right balance and they’ll break out of the bottom half.
      Their weakness is visual, especially color guard.

    • @prestonjones20013
      @prestonjones20013 3 месяца назад +1

      Troopers do an incredible job at telling stories. But traditionally, the best corps when it comes to Storytelling is Carolina Crown. There’s a few shows to check out on that front.
      Carolina Crowns 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2023 shows will probably all really hit for you. As they did for most people
      As far as what Troop needs to do to break out of the bottom half of finals, it’s more so a staff and talent thing. Not that they aren’t talented and don’t have great staff, but there is a clear difference between them and the top 7 or so corps. Bluecoats all the way down to Mandarins have the best staff in the world, consisting of literal legends of the activity. The Cavaliers usually do as well, but they’re having some issues at the moment. I’m interested to see how the end of the Three-Quel goes for Troop. Especially since they just got rid of their visual staff, for some inexplicable reason.
      Phantom is also really good at telling stories, check out their shows in 2008 and 2011

    • @mikewolfrey899
      @mikewolfrey899 3 месяца назад +1

      @@prestonjones20013 full disclosure...my daughter joined Troopers Guard a month before the season started after being in Crossmen last year. We heard lots of rumors of why the staff was let go and since they are rumors, I wont waste time listing them. The good news is the new staff is well liked and really started to gel with the kids. Here's hoping a second season under their belt will help them even more. I'll check out the shows you listed. And just so you know, next years show will be the forth in the story. It started with "Virtuoso", then "Lasso the Sun" and "Dance with the Devil" and now "The Final Sunset" for 2025. Thanks for the response.

      Dig deeper! PR started story telling in 1981 with their first production of Spartacus. Did it again in ‘82. Then came the cadets with their many west side story shows and first 3 championships. ‘83, ‘84, ‘85. It’s not that uncommon for shows to span more than one season, at least is wasn’t during my years growing up around PR ‘81-‘86, member PR cadets ‘87-‘88, PR ‘89-‘94.
      There’s always been something about the troopers! Fans have loved them for decades! There was a number of years I thought they might not survive much less return to finals, and the crowd went crazy the year they pulled it off!
      Trivia fun, PR & BD have been DCI finalists every year since 1974, tied for the longest active streak. PR’s 12th place finish in 2019 certainly gave us some drama.. Sadly, SCV missing the 2023 season ended their 48-yr run from ‘72-‘22. (‘20 canceled & ’21 exhibition - Covid19)
      Any guesses which corps has the next longest streak of finalist appearances?

    Man, this show FLEW by very much like Babylon!!!...I was there at finals next to the staff and everyone was going BERZERK!!! It was sooo loud. Apparently someone was capturing db levels of crowd reaction, and Phantom by FAR led the entire week at Finals at 107.7db ⚠⚠
    There was a couple things that were tiny complaints by me, was the delay effect on the Mello solo in the ballad. I heard it in person a few times, and was never really a fan, plus the soloist could never really get the tuning right (it's hard, I get it!) The other one may not be very popular, but (I know I already said the show flew by!) the trombone and Bari duet seemed to be a little too long. I think they could've added some other moment in there...we had the acrobatic duet, and then the effects duet...I felt like we could have dropped one of those moments for a full ensemble moment much like the 2nd movement. Those were my only two things from this being the PERFECT show...at least from a brass perspective and the little I know about percussion.
    But seriously I was on my feet screaming from the Z-pull to the end and then some! I loved the drill all the way through out. You said it...satisfying! I see alot of "letdown drill" in BD and Bloo where you think there's going to be a very cool formation and right before it comes together, it scatters and falls apart...like "we meant to do that" So thank you Phantom for the satisfying drill!!
    There's really no way to capture the absolute Phantom Phever that was in Lucas Oil that night. I tried to get a Phantom shirt, but there was no way...the line for their merch store was 10x longer than all the other corps combined!!!

    My only complaint with Phantom in general is that their music is almost all in your face volume at 11. This has generally been true for most of their seasons. Would like to see them display more tonal diversity.

    Epic music with some truly epic moments...especially that killer ending.
    However, I will say that PR got away with a ton of prop movement & several park/bark moments. Compared to the corps in front of them & even SCV, PR had the simpliest marching drill.
    I would love to see what would happen if PR could recruit more elite brass & trumpet players.
