My 2 favorite moments of DCI that I witnessed this year. 16:03 - Z-Pull (made famous by The Cadets who unfortunately went Bankrupt before the season started) and Scout’s HIGH CLASS respectful nod to The Cadets at Allentown. There’s a reason why both of these ensembles are LOVED by the fans every year, no matter their placement.
I marched in this show on Euphonium! Every movement is different: The opening: The Exploring of the Mind the 2nd movement: Diving into the mind 3rd movement: the mind running 4th movement: peace at mind 5th movement: the mind going crazy the closer: the mind going insane
possibly my favorite DCI show ever, you guys killed it and arguably should’ve medaled. i was on my feet screaming for your closer in indy. incredible season!
Thanks for the demystification! Honestly I understood the concept enough but breaking down the themes by movement really helps further appreciate what is going on. Also great job.
Phantom does an amazing job of keeping all that is Phantom intact (classical music, amazing ballads, telling a story and rich sound) while pushing the envelope to keep it fresh. This was the crowd favorite for sure, but it seems that they are the crowd favorite year after year. So glad you enjoyed it. You could tell they left it all on the field!
I was thinking, he's not getting any younger. DCI needs to have him record all of the top 25 corps welcome message now so they can use it forever if they wanted to.
PHANTOM REGIMENT!! The best in my Mynd! I've been an avid fan for over 20 years! ❤ This show for me was amazing. Starting with Moonlight Sonata?!!Right up my alley and what a great arrangement at the close. Got to see them in Canton in the VIP section! ❤❤ ok, i cried! 😅 They always make my hairs stand up!!
On finals night I’m about 15 rows up from the sideline on the 40 yard line and as loud as the corp is, you couldn’t even hear them for the last minute of the show because the crowd was going absolutely nuts. This is one of the best Phantom shows in a long time and everybody in that stadium was there for it!
Throughout their entire history Phantom Regiment has always championed classical music. TO this day I don't think anyone can truly touch them in their dedication to it. It isn't always obvious in EVERY season, such as 2008 "Spartacus" where the only widely known composer was Richard Strauss, but the entire repertoire was in the classical genre. But since the return to competition post COVID they've had three insane programs with a MAJOR classical element: 2022- No Walk Too Far - closer from Mahler's 5th Symphony; 2023- Exogenesis - Ballad from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #2 (better known as the music behind "All By Myself"); 2024- Mynd - Opener from Beethoven''s Moonlight Sonata, with small sections scattered throughout the show.
Usually I watch the corps video and then secondarily look over to see what you're thinking or only on the pauses when you speak. This time, I concentrated on you as the Cadets Z-Pull began to the end of the show. I was not disappointed when you just smiled and dropped your jaw. I'm glad you ran it back to watch again. Probably my favorite 2024 DCI/Drum Corps moment.
Blue Devils have dominant in all-around scoring, the Bluecoats are pushing the activity forward and defining what can be done with electronics and effects, Crown Brass has largely owned excellence in that area, but if you want big round overwhelming sound that consistently blows your face away and hits you square in the chest (and the feels)... Phantom have always been the corps for that, and there's nobody like 'em.
The unraveling of the mind at the end, paying homage to Cadets Z-pull, just brilliant from beginning to end. I argue this is one of the most emotional shows written the last 20 years. Wish I could have been there.
in San Antonio this year Phantom was the clear crowd favorite, +30 seconds of standing ovation at the finale compared to any other corps. They just nailed the energy and emotions!
I was with this corps for 2 weeks as part of the foodtruck. All the kids, staff and other volunteers were all fantastic. The show blew me away every single time! It was a great season for Phanton Regiment!
Adding another comment to say, they had the closer of the year this season! If you can, try to find a crowd reaction to that closer, literally had the ENTIRE crowd on their feet for the final minute and a half! Twas truly a magical moment to experience in person.
Omg thank you for reacting to this, I’ve been watching since you started this series and I marched with Phantom this summer!!! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Dude you’re killing these reactions, can’t wait to see what you cook up next! Definitely each corp/show designer has their own style. Phantom never fails to pick a good book. Even lower placing corps (ones that don’t make finals) have their own style. If you want to see the craziest show ever designed, I’d definitely suggest 2014 Boston Crusaders. However I would strongly suggest doing some research on that show’s design ahead of time. It’s pretty much a giant middle finger to the elite corps (G7) at the time and you’ll need the background.
Charlie, if you choose to watch BAC 2014, you should watch the video from CJ's Music here on RUclips discussing the events of the 2014 season (in your free time). The story and circumstances behind that show are some of the craziest and angriest the activity has ever seen. It truly deserves the deep research
We all know drum corps is so different live than a recording. But let me tell you, this video does not capture just how crazy all of us in the crowd went at the ending of this show. It takes a special show to get the crowd on its feet before the end of a show and keep the crowd on their feet through the entire ending. This was one of those shows. I think we were all screaming as loud as they were playing the entire time.
I got to see this one in person at my local show too!!! They're so powerful. The way they've been climbing back up the Finals ladder has been incredible to watch over the last 3 seasons. Highest finals placement since 2012 baby!!!
I love how you get the show themes almost right a way. It really shows how interested you are in this activity. And the Drum Corps community loves it when more and more people show interest in the activity especially international folk. Fun fact: A member from the Netherlands marched with Blue Stars this past season

Easily my fav show of 2024 (and I say that as a Bluecoats fan, and am ecstatic that Bloo won). I'll be listening to this music year round. The stadium absolutely went bonkers for this show. I believe I saw somewhere that they recorded fan cheering at 107 decibels. I was there; it was so cool. And while I can maybe see a little more symbolism related to the "mind" for the theme than you mentioned, I'm with you that the theme isn't clearly and simply represented in the show's design. I'm not particularly bothered by that, because I thought they used the props, etc., wonderfully and creatively.
Watching it on RUclips will never capture the feeling like seeing and hearing and feeling it in person! There was so much Phantom Phever happening that night we were losing our ever loving MYNDS over this show! So many folks were screaming from the Zpull to the end and then more!!
Yes!! So glad you “definitely did not review” Phantom for ‘24! Love this show because it is such a blend of innovation and tradition or corps. The book is beautiful, of course the closer but I also want to mention the jazz section because it’s performed incredibly well and so fun to listen to and watch!! Top 5 closer in DCI history for me!! And never MYND me while I watch the closer on repeat! Awesome take on this one!
YES IM FINALLY QUALIFIED TO SPEAK ABOUT THIS. At 14:50 you ask about the trombone. That is a bass trombone which is the 2nd biggest trombone in the trombone family. The piece they are playing in that part of the show is called fly or die and is written for a bass trombone and a piano originally but it was adapted to be a bass trombone and baritone duet. Bass Trombone gang 💪
@TheCharlieSmithChannel no problem, love the content. Also, fun fact the bass trombone player is ben Stone. He has been a phantom regiment soloist this year, last year, and the year before that. He is a crazy accomplished player. I would totally recommend their last 2 shows as they have won fan favorite just like this show.
My daughter was a mellophone in this show. You need to experience these shows in person to feel the sound and these kids are amazing. Love your reviews and keep it up! P.S. “MYND = My Mind” and unlocking different thoughts feelings, emotions etc. think of compartments of the mind and intrusive thoughts etc. ❤️🎺
Charlie, I think Phantom Regiment’s Mynd theme was about being mindblowingly amazing. This was akin to old time drum corps (mid 80s and early 90s) where themes were less important to amazing music and movement. IMO the power and precision of performance matter more than theme. Loved your reaction to this phenomenal production.
Haha you found a hack. I need to remember to not add it to my drum corps playlist before I publish it. Otherwise my patrons don't have the exclusive benefit of the early releases 🙄🤦🏻♂️
Charlie another great reaction. You definitely have the Big Brain for conceptual thinking especially on an activity you are relatively new to.....THX Ltd. is an American audio company based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is known for its eponymous suite of high fidelity audiovisual reproduction standards for movie theaters, screening rooms, home theaters, computer speakers, video game consoles, car audio systems, and video games.
Charlie, you have not reacted to The Cadets, formerly known as The Cadets of Bergen County and Garfield Cadets. This legendary corps were 10-time American Legion champions (before DCI was formed in 1972) and 10-time DCI champions (1983, 84, 85, 87, 90, 93, 98, 00, 05, & 11) and were the ones who created the Z-pull. That move was honored by Phantom in this show towards the end, the one you went back two. These were the marching KINGS!!!!! I need you to do the 1992, 1998, 2000, 2005 and 2011 Cadets. Those were some great championship years. 💫💫💫💫💫
Love this show! I started losing my Mynd from the start, then from the wedge to pull it to the beautiful company front horn blast to the end my Mynd was completely blown. Very proud of them doing this wonderful show! Even when I marched Guardsmen in 75 and 76 they would yell SUTA. If you watch more Phantom, during many shows at a place near the end, all of the their fans in the stands would yell SUTA to charge them to finish strong. Phantom two titles, but is a fan favorite many times. .... SUTA! ❤🎉😊
WHOOOOOOOA! Those soloists! That's a bass trombone, by the way. The original composition is called "Fly or Die" by Gilles Rocha, written for bass trombone and piano. Splitting it into a baritone/ bass trombone feature was brilliant arranging by Phantom's staff. There are several performances of it on RUclips. Here's a link to my favorite one: ruclips.net/video/RB9vJpNYuL0/видео.html
I learned this year that there is even such a thing as a "soprano" trombone, or something of that type. I never understood the variants, because my Band/Orchestra work was 40 years ago, and since then Ive been mostly choral. I played flute for 7 years but isolated in Utah had only heard of Piccolo (flute) and the standard Concert Flute or "C" flute. I didn't realize there were Alto, Bass, and Contrabass flutes.. And of course there are also variants of many other standard instruments.
@@ZakhadWOW I once saw a contrabass saxophone at the Arizona Opry in Mesa, AZ. It was 30 ft long and required 3 people to play, one to blow the reed and steady it, two to key it.
another greed reaction Charlie. I love what you said about each corp bring something special to the field. That is an extremely true statement and honestly that statement is one that has a wavered since the 80s… while the activity overall has changed and in some cases you may have certain corps who dominates specific areas of the activity until they’re knocked off… For example if you look at brass in the 80s it was blue Devils winning brass every year then star of Indiana then knocked them off and had the best horn line 4 years running then they left the activity and you would have a combination of The Cavaliers blue Devils and Madison Scouts in the middle to late 90s… The early 2000s were all about The Cavaliers then starting in the late 2000s through 2017 Carolina crown owned the brass caption and since then it has been the bluecoats and the blue Devils that’s how things swing
If you were to turn your sound all the way up you still have not reached the pure volume of a horn line this talented. I have been involved or a spectator since the 1970's and this is one of the loudest horn lines I have heard. Think train horn at the crossing as a reference.
Pleas react to PR’s No Walk Too Far. Still one of my very favorite closers. In-person, their final chord was probably twice as loud as the preceding (same) chord phrase. The stadium just ripped at that point.
The bigger trombone that the soloist had was a bass trombone that has two valves/triggers instead of one or zero to allow it to play lower notes. The size of the horn is also slightly larger to allow for the musician to hit those low notes more easily. Or it might've been a contrabass trombone which is even larger although I don't think that was the case Also, I was lucky enough to see this show live near my home and boy are you correct about the wall of sound. On their first hit I think I leaped out of my chair it so incredible. Genuinely the most entertaining show I had seen all night.
Trombonist here. That trombone is a bass trombone. Like you said, it's bigger than a regular trombone and has 2 thumb-operated valves (or triggers, if you'd prefer) that allows the air to flow through that extra bit of tubing at the back of the horn. Both of these combined offer a darker tone compared to the typical tenor trombone, which makes the bass trombone much better suited for low notes. Fun fact: most tenor trombones at the high school level or higher (such as the two featured in my profile picture) will have one of the aforementioned valves in order to offer us access to the full low register if need be. The "normal" trombones most people are familiar with are referred to as "straight trombones" or, as most of us call them, "peashooters", which are primarily found in jazz and other commercial music.
Funny enough at the Allentown show when Phantoms percussion didnt perform me and my friend ended up surrounded by them in the stand while they were hanging out in street clothes and we didnt even realize who they were till they had to leave to go watch their corps lol
The General Effect of the show is a judged caption and one of the fundamental philosophies of judging the caption is how each individual part of the show enhances the show's intent. You have a wonderful ability to do this.
the trombone has an "F" attachment it adds extra pipe when you use the valve your 6th and 7th positions move up to 1st and 2nd position on the slide. tmi but the valve looked to be a Thayer valve which is set on side and has a freer blowing resistance, and the piping is expanded ie not so tight to assist in the freer blow of your air stream. a shorter explanation you dont have to throw your arm all the way out to hit the notes placed further out on the slide its easier on your arm
As a former phantom marcher. I know how the designers think about theming. They think through the narrative elements deeply, but ultimately care way way more about the musical and visual presentation, as you said.
11:34 I was one of those brass players in the front of the cages and it was always so beautiful to hear but I definitely have hearing damage after this season
Although Bluecoats won first place (as they are increadible). Phantom was easily the crowd entertainment favorite. As you can tell by the thunderous applause. They blew the roof off the building. I expect a fantastic season for Phantom again next year!
The THX chord resolution is the same note across many octaves, which is what the corps did here too! Everyone on the same note for a minute there. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
It’s an open fifth which makes it hard to distinguish pitches being different. The THX sound effect is also an open fifth, but in the key of D whereas Phantom’s resolution here is in F.
I hate to point out errors but this one made me laugh a bit. In your intro, you said this was the 2004 show, not 2024. haha! Have you ever considered doing a joint reaction/long form interview with another drum corps RUclips person? If that prospect tickles your fancy, you might try reaching out to the guy behind Funliner Productions RUclips channel. He's a Blue Devil alum and has started instructing smaller corps since he aged out.
Hahaha oh shoot! So I did. I also forgot to take out one of my 'what's good planet earth' takes 😂. Sloppy. That's a good idea about the joint reaction. I'll check him out

idk if you heard but the entire organization disbanded and because of the court case it's literally impossible for them to return under the same name/with any connection to the cadets whatsoever, so they're probably gone for good entirely
If you can, you should make it out to watching a show in person next season. The power from the corps (mainly phantom because they're the most powerful hornline right now) doesn't translate well through video. Being in person will genuinely bring you to your knees with power

Haha you found a hack. I need to remember to not add it to my drum corps playlist before I publish it. Otherwise my patrons don't have the exclusive benefit of the early releases 🙄🤦🏻♂️
Outstanding show Phantom Regiment has always been one of my favorites.
I’ve seen a lot of drum corps in my day and by far this was the best Show Concept and show I’ve seen!! Wow what a show!!!
man the mics did not do any justice to the sheer amount of volume at the end
They were standing too far forward for the mics to properly pick them up
This is one of my favorite shows this year. Just a lot of good shows this year. Troopers also blew me away
Had the pleasure of watching this live- and yes- they were extremely loud. Should’ve gotten bronze.
Please do troopers this year
Charlie another great reaction.
The trombone was a bass trombone, they're bigger because they play lower than a regular one!
Phantom two titles, but is a fan favorite many times. .... SUTA! ❤🎉😊
My favorite is Cavaliers 2002. It's older, more classic DCI and it gets me excited every time I watch it. It's clean, moving, and thrilling.
someone get this man to watch Carolina Crown Rach Star 2012
AND BOTH instruments were wirelessly miced for soloing, with the later section filtered through a vocoder.
Undisputed best show of this season! Thanks for reviewing this show!
If you were to turn your sound all the way up you still have not reached the pure volume of a horn line this talented. I have been involved or a spectator since the 1970's and this is one of the loudest horn lines I have heard. Think train horn at the crossing as a reference.
got to hear them warm up at broken arrow, and then on field, it is unreal!
We have at least two more years out of most of those Mellos. They were absolutely screaming! I saw almost every show!
You should do Troopers 2024 next!
This is my favorite corp! They deserve a win!! Hopefully next year.
The type of trombone is a Bass Trombone i also happen to play it 😁😁
Pleas react to PR’s No Walk Too Far. Still one of my very favorite closers. In-person, their final chord was probably twice as loud as the preceding (same) chord phrase. The stadium just ripped at that point.
I was there, on the 50, 8th row, with my boys. Nothing better.
This and 2018 scv are incredible performances. Understanding the shows concept adds to the experience
Same visual staff too which makes a lot of sense
The bigger trombone that the soloist had was a bass trombone that has two valves/triggers instead of one or zero to allow it to play lower notes. The size of the horn is also slightly larger to allow for the musician to hit those low notes more easily. Or it might've been a contrabass trombone which is even larger although I don't think that was the case
Also, I was lucky enough to see this show live near my home and boy are you correct about the wall of sound. On their first hit I think I leaped out of my chair it so incredible. Genuinely the most entertaining show I had seen all night.
Thanks!
Thank you so much ❤️
Trombonist here.
You are spoiling us sir!
If you listen carefully the corps shouts We Drink Blood right before starting the z-pull….
I can’t believe this man hasn’t seen Tilt yet
Very observant!
That trombone is bass trombone!
14:19 bass trombone
Omg…. Is Mynd like “My Mind”? I feel dumb if that’s the case for not realizing it sooner!
YESSS CHARLIEEEE
The General Effect of the show is a judged caption and one of the fundamental philosophies of judging the caption is how each individual part of the show enhances the show's intent. You have a wonderful ability to do this.
"again", is so real
the trombone has an "F" attachment it adds extra pipe when you use the valve your 6th and 7th positions move up to 1st and 2nd position on the slide. tmi but the valve looked to be a Thayer valve which is set on side and has a freer blowing resistance, and the piping is expanded ie not so tight to assist in the freer blow of your air stream. a shorter explanation you dont have to throw your arm all the way out to hit the notes placed further out on the slide its easier on your arm
I was curious about how hearing would fair after that.. hopefully it continues healing! :)
What is chanted prior to the z-pull horns up?
SUTA from the Merch Driver!
@@trevorlewis24 I think the percussion says "we drink blood"
Really enjoyed this reaction. It’s okay if you don’t ‘understand’ the theme. What matters, is that you felt it. That’s what PR is all about. Cheers.
Although Bluecoats won first place (as they are increadible). Phantom was easily the crowd entertainment favorite. As you can tell by the thunderous applause. They blew the roof off the building. I expect a fantastic season for Phantom again next year!
PLEASE WATCH MANDARINS 2024 at finals. I marched that show this past season!!!!
@@liamallen2156 very nice, thank you!
Btw, I find the theme of Mynd to literally just be, coolness
It’s “My +Mind” = Mynd. Parent of corps member.
I'll check him out
If you like shows like this Babylon then i think you should check out Blue Devils 2017 Metamorph. Really great show
I didn't understand the show but I don't even care. Its one of my top 10 Phantom Regiment shows easily.
Hi!! I didn't know if you were aware but there actually are some British drum corps still active and competing today!! And some have also toured in both DCA and DCI! (Kidsgrove and Company have folded but Beeches are the current European champions!)

We do also have some upcoming competitions in September! DCUK finals is being held in Coventry and there's another held in Birmingham!
You should do boston crusaders
Santa Clara Vanguards show was so good too, as always 😏 Hope the Cadets make the same comeback SCV was able to make 😩
idk if you heard but the entire organization disbanded and because of the court case it's literally impossible for them to return under the same name/with any connection to the cadets whatsoever, so they're probably gone for good entirely
2 things, did you say "What's good planet earth" twice? 2nd, did you say 2004 instead of 2024 (around 0:08)
If you can, you should make it out to watching a show in person next season. The power from the corps (mainly phantom because they're the most powerful hornline right now) doesn't translate well through video. Being in person will genuinely bring you to your knees with power
I’m sorry I heard 2004 instead of 2024 for the your intro !! Idk why that got me so confused lol
