OCEAN! I WAS SCAMMED BY THE SAME PERSON IN KINGSTON!!!!! I go to Queen's as well. The exact same story, it was a basement apartment in a house on a major street in downtown Kingston, with his son living in Ottawa, he said he lived in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland though, and was an engineer. Same thing with the first, last, and second month deal. I signed a lease as well, said he needed the rent sent to his lawyer because he was going through a divorce blah blah. I sent him money, but for some reason he rejected the e-transfer and said to send it to a different email and that's when I stopped and started asking questions. He was SO convincing and his license was terrifying, saying he was 6'8" or something. I am so sorry that happened to you. It is the worst for some one to scam your hard earned money xx

For me that's a good amount,can get alot of things with thats like 2/3 🛵so kinda expensive but we both feel sorry 😔 for her
thats normal to move in, she paid for the first month, last month and security deposit.
Another RUclipsr I follow was scammed out of their $20,000+ down payment on their house last year 😥 It’s just infuriating there are people out there like that.

This almost happened to my family, but my mum had the idea to call the owners to ask a question about the house and they were really confused and we found out it was a scam and reported the person and messed with them a little before we even sent money thank goodness. I hope no one else falls for this.

It’s okay, you aren’t dumb at all. I was scammed recently out of 2k and i know how terrible it feels.

I remember when you had the debacle with the earbud company and free earbuds...it makes me sad people would try to take advantage of good people like you. i've also been scammed before but it was for a job. i was told that i got a job that i didn't even apply for but i was pretty excited because i needed a job. then the "manager" said that i needed to pay an amount for uniform and i didn't hesitate to pay. i was even offered transport to work and i gave my address. long story short i found out that it was a scam when the lady wasn't taking my calls and the transport didn't pitch on the day i had to work. again all the red flags were there, i just didn't see them because i was excited to work. anyways i'm sorry you had to go through all of this ocean🥺

Ocean! I was scammed on my very first day of work out of $2400!! I totally and completely understand how stressful it is, there’s so much going on and these awful people take advantage of our anxieties in hopes we’ll ignore the signs of the scam. :( I’m so sorry this happened to you. ❤️
also the PTSD associated with getting scammed is the worst. don’t be so hard on yourself and let yourself realize it could happen to anyone and those people are going to hell!!!

So sorry this happened. Unfortunately those scammers are good at what they do, so they can get most anyone in a situation like this. Especially younger people that are just excited to get into a place. Thank you for your story and again I’m so sorry this has happened
Something similar happened to me, my roommate and I were desperate to move out of our old place, we found a listing online that we liked, we scheduled a viewing with the landlord and on the day of and he told us that he was out of town but the door was unlocked so we could just view it ourselves and if everything was okay we could sign the lease and wire the deposit over right after. When we got there we noticed that there were cars outside and the place just felt lived in so we decided to knock on the door and a family was living there and they had no idea that their apartment was listed for rent online by a scammer. The scammer even went so far as to use the name of the person that was still living there. We knew they weren’t the same person because we had spoken to the scammer over the phone and they sounded completely different and the person that answered the door was super confused about why 2 young women showed up to his house. It was super awkward and extremely stressful. I’m glad you didn’t show up to the new place with all your stuff to find someone else living there. 😅

My husband and I ran into the same issue here in the states. It’s happening a lot more and they try to make it seem like things are legitimate until you start asking for money back. It’s sad but we took the life lesson and are more cautious

Hi Ocean, I’m so sorry this happened to you. Please don’t be too hard on yourself - this wasn’t your fault. The ONLY person whose fault this was is the person who scammed you. Regardless of red flags etc, THEY are the ones responsible for this. Please don’t blame yourself 💜

Be careful with this (not really known) scam:
A number from the same area called me.
I answer... nobody talks, or just inaudible words. It hang up.
Then i IMMEDIATLY received a text saying "sorry wrong number".
And right after "Hey btw, you have a nice voice.
I answer "haha, thanks".
Then i received a "So what's your name?"
At first, i really tought it was some wierd flirting technique. But i research the number... and found the owner of the number, and it juste didn't fit. Then, i wrote about it on social media and few friends reveived the same call and texts. Guess it works really well to collect information about someone.
I dit report to the anti-fraud center.
First of all - you are not dumb and this is not your fault at all!! This is outrageous and could have happened to any one at anytime ! I am praying you have peace of mind and are blessed with double or triple that amount before the end of this year! You are such a sweet pure soul and you are truly loved! 💕

A little late but oh my gosh Ocean I’m so sorry that that happened to you! First the whole PayPal thing and now that, I can never understand why people would do that to others, very sorry these things have happened to you but wishing you all the best in finding a new place without drama. Btw I feel like there’s always some sort of drama involved with landlords that happened to me too, I don’t know why but it seems to be a thing and I’m from Germany so it must be like that everywhere. Hi Ocean, I don't know if you would see this, but I am a fan of you for two years now and I love all your videos. Your videos have always helped me sleep and I have watched some of them repeatedly many times. I rarely leave comments, but this time I just want to say I am so sorry for what happened to you. I could not imagine how you feel. I just want to tell you that you should NEVER blame yourself for what happened, because you are the victim here, and you are definitely right, some of those scams have become super elaborate and I just hate these scammers so much. I also once rented an apartment without seeing it beforehand, and the landlord was also working somewhere else. The whole year I only texted and called the landlord and only zoomed once before signing the lease, but luckily it was not a scam. I am only mentioning this so you know that you should not blame yourself for being scammed. I hope you find a new and nice apartment, and I hope the drama with your old landlord would be far away from you as soon as possible! We will always be here to support you and your channel!
I also want to tell you a story of my friend who was scammed recently, just to let you know that none of this is your fault, and how elaborate some of those scams could get.
My friend is a college student looking for an internship on Handshake. She got an interview with this company and after she went through the interview(the other side did not turn on their camera the whole time), she got an offer for this internship. The scammers asked her to transfer around $3500 for purchases of computer and other equipments required for the internship and she did. It turned out that the whole thing was fake and she never got the money back because the scammer asked her to do a Zelle transfer. She also filed a police report and did everything but there was nothing the police could do. She also blamed herself for all the red flags she missed during the process because she was just so eager to get an internship. She said she was depressed for weeks and was just thinking about the money all the time. Even when she was at the grocery store buying $2 bread she was thinking that the money she lost could have bought so much bread, maybe enough to feed everyone in her program, etc. :(

Hey Ocean, I am so sorry this happened to you! I went through the same thing when I first moved to Geneva (Switzerland), so I totally understand how frustrating it is. I also payed in advance, without having seen the place first, they sent me passports that were stolen... and when I went to report it, police told me that this was very common and that normally they were mafias who stole passports from European citizens and used them to scam students...... So don't worry, you are not dumb at all and this is unfortunately something that happens to a lot of people.... Thank you for sharing!

He probably kept texting you because deep down, the human element of him felt guilty, but he didn’t feel guilty enough to give you your money back. He didn’t feel guilty enough not to scam you in the first place! He knew he was never going to give it back to you so he ghosted. So sorry this happened to you, hope you’re better now ❤️

I’m sorry that happened Ocean 💔 The apartment I lived in before my current one I signed for sight unseen so I totally understand why the circumstances made it seem more reasonable. And with things like rent, insurances, etc. it’s common to have deals like that, like I pay all my auto insurance up front for a discount so I get that seeming reasonable to you too. This is 100% that scumbag’s fault and you don’t have any reason to feel like you should’ve been the one to do things differently.

Landlords in Ontario are legally not allowed to ask new tenants for anything other than first and last month's rent OR first (or last) month's rent. In some cases they can ask for first month's rent + a security deposit that you would get back once your lease ends. I'm sorry this happened to you. I have been renting places for over 10 years and understand the complexity of it all. Unfortunately, there are alot of scammers out there because our housing market in Ontario is horrendous. Facebook marketplace is a way better option than Kijiji. I didn't even know people still used Kijiji... And sorry to tell you, but you are so young and will experience worst things in this world. This is just one experience and many more to come. One lesson I have learned is to not trust anyone. People might find me stern but I'd rather be like that then steamrolled. Things actually get more stressful in your 30s. My 20s were full of drama but now that transitioned into stress.

This absolutely sucks that this happened to you. It’s so unfortunate that you have to be so vigilant these days for scams everywhere. One thing you mentioned is you usually prepay rent months in advance and even though it might be easier to for you initially, it’s really not smart because if you do move out earlier - you could get into a really tough situation trying to get your money back. Not to mention, you could actually be investing that money or even just earning interest in your checking account, instead of basically giving your landlord an interest free loan. You definitely DO NOT want to give ANYONE your money earlier than you have to. Just something to consider in the future!

Ugh never never never sign a lease or pay without seeing the unit - they should ALWAYS show it to you, mask on or whatever. So sorry this happened to you. 💜

Ok one piece of advice to everyone: Don’t ever rent a place that is not through a rental agency. You should be dealing with the rental agent at all times, not the landlord. The only time I would ever deal with a landlord directly is if it’s a close family member, someone you know. Everyone I know who has had private rental agreements with a landlord has been scammed in some way. House falling apart, landlord won’t do repairs, etc. I once had a private rental agreement where I had to pay the landlord in cash because she “didn’t know how to use technology”. Turns out she was taking cash because she wasn’t reporting her rental income in her tax statement. Think about it... unless this is a close family member you’re dealing with, why wouldn’t the landlord work with a rental agency? Rental agencies actually protect the landlord, as well as the tenant. If the landlord doesn’t want to go through an agency, usually it’s because they are shady in some way. Be careful everyone!
I find that agency listings cost more per month (presumably because they have to pay them too) so it is better to find a landlord who does it themselves and save up the extra cash. I’ve been scammed by property managers too (deposits kept for regular wear and tear, last month rent paid twice etc) Also asking for previous tenant info to find out how the landlord is helps a lot. But I’ve never lived in a college town where rentals get picked up immediately so it might be different.
