    Having met Michael and had the pleasure of chatting with him, you come to realize that his music is who he is. Gentle, kind, meditative, thoughtful, playful and bemused. He makes the music he wants to hear the way he wants to hear it. If you don't like his music, then in a way, you don't like him because his expression on the bass is as honest as it comes.

    I have been mesmerized by this song from the first time I heard it in "92". It is like a mantra. I love how Michael brings his production sound with him. I saw him with my favorite, Michael Hedges in Maine along with the Flecktones. He really was the perfect bassist to accompany Hedges.

    Some novices just don't seem to get the tuning aspects of Manrings songs. The tuning is part of the song. That's why he uses a hyperbass to be able to achieve a wide range or notes and octaves while playing. He can flip one switch or push one button and attain crazy range and sound. It's all the more impressive that it is a 4 string bass.. and good luck trying to get his hyperbass.. the hyperbass without his custom bridge is about 6 thousand. I asked for the custom bridge and they turned me down and said when they do make one you are looking at 9k+.. insane.

    Such an amazing player. Saw him with. Michael Hedges several times. Was he a student of jaco? He has definitely found his own voice. I just watched a documentary about Jaco and all the musicians were talking about how there has been no one to touch him. I disagree. Michael is doing some imteresting things. Taking it to another level. Its been 36 years since the sad tragic death of jaco. Lets never forget his greatness or his inovations but lets make room for a virtuoso like Michael Manring. Wishing Mr pastorious could have conquered his deamons but no such luck. Michael seems like a very together individual this is 2011 ? I need to look up what he is doing today.

    I don’t see him as just a bass player in the normal sense, but a musician that likes the tones he can get from a bass that aid in making beautiful music. Coupled with that Zon, which is just made for him, figuratively and literally. I mean, I’m more of a funky P-Bass kind of guy, totally opposite to this kind of thing, but I appreciate it nonetheless.

    • @MrGul
      @MrGul 5 лет назад +1

      @@PriZeMaN1 It's absolutely NOT a clean signal - there's a lot of reverb in the sound to create that kind of ambience (he mentions that in interviews, too). As to precisely which effect pedal he's using, I don't know - but pretty much any decent reverb pedal/rack unit should be able to get you at least close to this kind of reverb.

  • @MeAndTheBoys_
    @MeAndTheBoys_ 5 лет назад

    I first discovered this player and his unique style about a month ago. Now after ive seen and heard his many pieces i feel like i feel when i listen to highly specialized music,it tends to get quite repetitive,and not in a good way.
    But his technique and his use of mechanical levers to alter the notes is pretty amazing.
    I see this man more as an performance artist. I would like to see him in the role of more traditional bass player so i could get a reference as to what his real style is. Now he is masking himself in these techniques and soundscapes etc.
    But he is good at what he does.

    so what music does have depth and soul to you? I'm insulted because given the technical prowess and how much soul he actually pours into his performance, it's still not full appreciated because somehow it's perceived as "gimmicky". Gimmicky is Michael Angelo Batio. Gimmicky is the myriad of "drifting" rip offs that have sprung up ever since Andy Mckee went viral. This is pure. At least to me >:(

  • @fretbuzz59
    @fretbuzz59 12 лет назад

    Why be insulted? After all, it's only, like, my opinion, right? To me this stuff has the depth and soul of a flowery Hallmark card.

    • @JonHop1
      @JonHop1 3 года назад +4

      Opinions can be insulting.. Especially when they are very ignorant in nature.

  • @fretbuzz59
    @fretbuzz59 12 лет назад

    Obviously inflections of one instrument don't necessarily translate to other. Decades ago, transcribers of rock guitar developed ways to convey some of the idiosyncratic things rock players do.
    If I found this Manring's stuff the least bit interesting, instead of mind-numbingly boring, I might be open to his techniques & the tricked-out bass. OTOH, Stanley Jordan makes "real" music (as opposed to soundscapes), & I can't stand that either. Though that's b/c of his sound more than the substance.

  • @fretbuzz59
    @fretbuzz59 12 лет назад

    All his compositions like this sound alike. Music composed for specialized instruments rarely has any real substance, and this is no exception. It's gimmicky, and lacks any real depth and soul.

    • @gabibonza
      @gabibonza 4 года назад +4

      "Music composed for specialized instruments"... No dude, the instrument was designed by him to do exactly what he needed... It's like Tosin Abasi and his guitar... It's a new level of musicians. The "depth and soul" are not in music itself... They're inside the listener.

  • @fretbuzz59
    @fretbuzz59 12 лет назад

    Nonsense. Bach's fugues can be played on any standard keyboard instrument, using standard techniques. What's more, they could be transcribed note-for-note for configurations of non-keyboard instruments. This new age rubbish can only be played on this non-standard instrument, using non-standard techniques. It's a gimmick.

    • @carsoncityairsoft
      @carsoncityairsoft 5 лет назад +7

      fretbuzz59 you really aren’t very smart. Why is your definition of a piece of “music” (as you keep saying) something that can be transcribed onto another instrument? This doesn’t make sense on any level of thinking. If you didn’t like it then why did you waste your time and my own brain cells in commenting?
