- We are embarking on a 52-hour journey aboard the California Zephyr sleeper train! Join me (and Bobby from @LivingBobby) on this epic long-distance train trip going from Chicago to San Francisco. This is THE most beautiful train ride in the US and one of the best trains in the world!.
I’ll show you how it is to live on the Amtrak sleeper train for 3 days: from a roomette tour (a first class private compartment), to the meals and even the shower…
I took the California Zephyr in winter, so you’ll see plenty of snow as we pass through the beautiful scenery: the plaines of the midwest, the rockies, deserts of Utah and forests of California.
I’ve been on a lot of first-class overnight trains and sleeper trains but the Amtrak California Zephyr really made me re-discover how beautiful the US is!

We flew to San Francisco and left Amtrak in Emeryville taking the same route you did. In Chicago, we switched trains and rode Amtrak to New York City, then home to Tampa, Florida. Stayed in Denver for couple of days. Also stayed in NYC for couple of days. Celebrated spouse's 60th birthday with this AHMAZING trip! I would do it again in a heartbeat! GREAT VIDEO!!
I just got a ticket and I am going one way from Emeryville California to Chicago and then down to Memphis Tennessee and I am so excited I have been watching videos all day I'm so excited ❤❤❤
The adventure of a lifetime!
Bobby are you on Instagram ? If yes could you drop your I'd
Aww it was so fun sharing these 56 hours with you haha
You both look like souls born for eachother ❤️

How much was the trip with just train tickets per person?
Brought back so many memories from my childhood when we would travel cross country on Amtrak in a room in the sleeper car. Food was always great. Views were magnificent. So glad you enjoyed your trip, and thanks for the memories!
Great travel video. I like that Lucile and Bobby are so positive and appreciate everything: the nice room, the delicious food, the good service, and the beautiful scenery. Their attitude is wonderful. A trip on the Southwest Chief sounds fantastic.
Canadian sleeper cars have their own toilet and sink. Real handy thru the night...
I rode the Zephyr the entire way westward many years ago just like you and never tire of watching videos on it. And like you I also took it in winter, which I think is the best time of year to take it, other than that the days are shorter so you can see less. But the best parts are during the day even in winter. In warmer months you do get to see green fields on the flatter and less interesting parts though.
I rode from Little Rock to Chicago to an Aurora concert and then took the train from there to San Francisco and stayed for a few days. Then took the train from there to Los Angeles and then through south with stops in El Paso and San Antonio. Then back to Little Rock, AR. That was a great trip.
Those views are so pretty especially all the snow
As a long time rider of Amtrak long distance trains I must say you have a wonderful attitude. You are not in a hurry and are just enjoying the experience. You did an excellent job of letting your viewers feel as if they were there. A great vlog. Thanks!
Thank you James!! The journey IS the destination with Amtrak haha :)
Totally agree! I took the Zephyr from SF to Chicago in a family bedroom. We were actually early, but no way you should plan that.
@@LucileHR 1:56 i Like ThaT hand move u did
I've travelling on Amtrak train even before Amtrak became nationwide (formerly individual railroad passengers companies became no longer confused with many transfers) for over 54 years. I hopped once or twice a year acrossing any part of USA as I love it and no matter if the train is delays or on time because train travellings are blasting with wonderful socially different people from all over the places and a beauty by looking views passing different areas too. And I'm using mostly sleeper car that is including no extra cost eating in dining car is the best! And their real foods are great! Able to walk entire each cars or standing out of train car on platform if stop for 10 or more minutes (don't wonder away from platform then the train will left by catch up on schedule or be on-time a minute or two before). While monitoring to the completely refueling in locomotives, done by exchanging suitcases in baggage car, finishing refueling water each car and less passengers hopping in or hopping out will be leaving early as a schedule.
I used took Southern Pacific (SP) Peninsula Commuter trains for years. SP ran between San Francisco and San Jose, now called Caltrain extended to Gilroy (south of San Jose).
Once pandemic will be over and I will resume traveling again plus, dining car foods will resume standard real good food.
For you guys are taking a short trip on any long distance Amtrak to see if you like the train before taking longer trip. Also, check train status (keeping repeating if a train is catch up) for the arrival to save your waiting. Enjoy!
It would be so interesting hearing all your stories! Serious. Find a way to share.......👍🇺🇸😁
@@sistakathy Thank you my friend!
I really appreciate that these two have such a positive outlook!
easy when you got the $$$
Life is good, as long as you don't sleep in the upper bunk. We loved it.
Lol, you did find a lot of exciting things. The netting is standard in all sleeper class cars including the single deck cars. Those 3 levels are not storage; they are stairs to climb up the upper bunk. Amtrak is also very comfortable with their mattresses, but some recommend bringing your own pillows as they aren't the comfiest.
A big THANK YOU to each of you for watching this vid :D So grateful!!!
Go watch this vid next for part 2 of this adventure: ruclips.net/video/Hj_BRHSm2Ac/видео.html
Happy you got to experience our snow in denver!
Such a well-done video: the views, the room tour, the meals...everything so well filmed and explained. Thank-you. Definitely looks like a trip I’d love to take.
I adore train travel and have watched quite a few Amtrak videos but have never ever seen the food looking so absolutely delicious. Looks like they've listened to their passengers and gone away from the microwaved dinners into a gastronomic delight! Hello from Australia :)
the food was really good!! and I loved that room service was included too :D
The food on the long haul trips in the western part of the U.S. has always been exceptional. The trips are longer, the trains are bigger( The Superliner cars are two levels ,Dining on top galley down below) East coast trains with the exception of the Auto Train are all single level (simply not enough room to store all the food or employ the staff needed). I've taken The California Zephyr and The Coast Starlight ( U.S. west coast) and the food is most excellent. If you ever take a trip on a train in the U.S. GO WEST JANE GO WEST !!!
1:56 ThaT hand move!🤩🥰🙌😛
cool kicks Lucille right on
After watching a few of Bobby's videos with you I didn't know if you're shy or can't speak English well cause you didn't talk a lot but it's so nice to hear more about these trips from your perspective! Keep making great content, greetings from UK! 🇬🇧
This is so dope, I'm planning on taking this train and then going to San Diego. I've been wanting something new and different from Chicago and this definitely gave me an idea of how it'll be. Love the video!
This is not 1st Class, it is a Roomette. We booked 2 of the across from each other on the upper deck. We took our 2 boys to New Mexico & rented a car to drive through Colorado. We had such a good time. I think 1st Class would be the big Family bedroom with your own bathroom and it’s also a shower. We loved our roomettes & if we all had our drapes open we could see the beautiful scenery on both sides ❤
Thanks - thought they looked small
You also get all your meals included a porter comes and gets your preferred time to dine. We brought snacks to tie us over in the evening or afternoon. There was always a fresh pot of coffee in our car at one end along with a bathroom. You don’t have coach passengers wandering around your car either. Or, maybe because we were towards the end of the train. Checked our bags and each had a duffle bag or backpack in the roomette. When we arrived in Chicago we were able to be in a separate 1st class waiting area with comfy seats, drinks, snacks, nice bathrooms and free wifi. Our porter, Peggy turned our seats into beds for the evening with linens. It was a great experience! The first floor had showers which my husband and eldest son made use of. I freshened up but waited for our hotel to shower. If we’d of gone all the way to Seattle or California, definitely would have showered 🧼
@@susanmurphy1986 you are really getting my desire up to take such a trip as your version sounds fabulous. Gotta think it’s not cheap though
The family bedroom does not have a bathroom or shower, but outside the room there is 3 restrooms and 1 public shower people use in that sleeper car. The bedrooms on the 2nd floor have a combo toilet and shower with a door but very tight.
Great video of Amtrak's best trip! I se you had Craig as your sleeping car attendant. He's the best on the railroad!
We just got back from taking this route round trip. We had Craig on the way back. The dining car and room attendants really make this trip!
OOOOOMG This looks like so much fun. Since I was a kid, I have always loved trains.
You two made that trip look so cool. No sniping about the food and amenities. You just took things as they came and made me love it too!
i truly enjoyed this trip!! the food was delicious, and the view and the service were awesome! also it was pretty cheap too for what you get!!
You don't take the train if you're in a hurry, The Coast Starlight was once stuck in the snow for 37 hours. First rule of Amtrak travel always book the sleeper car, you'll stay clean, well fed and well rested It cost more but trust me it's well worth it.
The tamale is my favorite! The chocolate torte can't be beat.
Wow!, you both are so positive. Glad you enjoyed!
LOL THE DOUBLE FISTING OF COFFEE ☕ that sounds so good in cold colorado
Great video, Amtrak across the country is on my bucket list.
Thank you for the video. With respect, those 3 little racks that you mention as you were showing your room are the steps to access the upper bunk bed.
Gros bisous ❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I can sense new train videos coming soon. Maybe taking Amtrak again from San Diego to Seattle, a train from Vancouver to Ontario, I also hear South American has epic trains too. Glad to see you guys are back again on your exciting adventures!
Yessss I have more train vids coming sooooon
REALLY ENJOYED YOUR TRAVELOGUE. THANKS FOR POSTING. GOOD MEMORIES OF MY ZEPHYR TRIP.
Hey there! It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen you last. Looking like life has continued to treat you & Bobby well. As a Canadian, lemme tell ya, that’s a heck of a lot of snow (even for me)! Still looked warm cozy outside inside, though, not going to lie. And how decadent everything looked, including the super-cheesy tamale! Thanks for another stellar upload. 👍🏽✌🏽
thank you so much for your comment :D this was the most snow I've ever seen in my life haha
Thanks for this trip report. I think this is the best winter Cali Zephyr trip report out there.
oh thank you Andrew!! this is so nice!
Hey Lucile, from Australia. I continue to love your narration and filming. So clean and relevant and honest and you have that 'something' that is so engaging. I always get a good sensation of your experience. Ciao!
Hi Andrew, thank you so much for this comment! This means a lot :D
Great video! I am planning on taking this same train in September and this gave me some ideas on how to prepare. I'm super excited. As to "on time", I am familiar with this phenomenon. I was once 10 hours late on a train from Los Angeles to Olympia due to weather and freight train challenges. That was extreme but good to think about.
Great video of a cute and charming couple. My Aunt and Uncle took this trip! I am going to book with my wife soon!
Looks like a great way to see about 2/3 of the country. Cool room, great looking food and the view from the observation car. Amazing. And I really like the tag team approach in your and Bobby's videos. He was able to show us the view while you were in the shower. Guest starring on one another's videos is a smart way to give two points of view. I appreciate that.
thank you for this nice comment :D it is so fun to have Bobby on these videos :D
A great video! I love your enthusiasm and positive attitude about everything!
fun fact about the Mississippi river, where it starts in Minnesota it is so narrow that you can jump across it.
Love these types of videos! I've been in a sleeper train from London to Fort William in Scotland and another from Paris to the alps
oh that seems so cool!! i want to go on these!!
Those both sound really nice
I’m so looking forward to our train ride next year! Thank you for this video 🙏❤️❤️❤️
I really enjoyed watching your experience. Me and my mom went at end of April and it showed a bit right before the Moffit tunnel on our ride. Our trip was 2 hours late arriving into Emeryville. We were not worried as I read they seem to never be on time so we just enjoyed the extra 2 hours on trip. It was an amazing trip and I'm glad you both got to experience it.
I know it sucked, but winter is the best to take the CZ. So damn beautiful.
Very nice yall spent that time together
Thanks for warning me about the large meals.
Looked like lots of fun!! Thanks!!
Wow,what a beautiful and cozy trip, thk u😃
Great energy in your vlog. Boy their first class was very inviting. Yes, people need to alternative travel experiences that are not about racing from point A to point B. It isn’t all about the destination but about the journey you take and experiences you encounter along the way. I did to the LA to Seattle along coast. No trains along past San Luis Obispo anymore. Continuous landslides. But on one trip in the observation car a people who had guitars with them and harmonica started playing on people joined in a like hootenanny. We sang for a couple hours as we watched the scenery. It was great fun.
Wow loved this one Lucile!
thank you so much Brett!!
So nice to see a review of the Zephyr that did not start with a complaint about the size of the room!
I was so happy about the size of the room! it was perfect for a couple since we could sit on the same seat and watch a movie!! if you need more space you can get a "bedroom" (aka a bigger room) but it's way more expensive !
Fun fact, the USA has the most extensive railway networks in the world. More than the #2 and #3 (China and Russia) combined! Also more than India, Canada, Germany, France and Australia combined.
Well, thank you..this was quite enjoyable😊👍
Seen a lot of videos Is on this trip, really like yours. well done.
Have fun it is the best way to travel
By seeing the quality of your content
I know you will soon be in millions
All the best you are going to be huge🙃💪🏻
thank you!!!
I’ve always wanted to go on this trip
Amtrak is great , in Europe you have to share the room with 4 other people .
public disposal of affliction
Lovely video, could you please point me in the direction where you could book this trip on line, love to get over there from the UK
I love Bobby! He is enjoying the food so much. Lol
The sleeper cars, rooms are classic Amtrak based on my experience on the auto train. Uncomfortable and cramped for taller 6'4 people and overweight.😀 I'm looking for real comfort. This is ideal for the younger generations. Aged 65
Delightful. You did a great job making this video.
I did this trip with my wife over thirty years ago. Thanks for bringing back something great memories. All the best for your future.
Awww this is so sweet :) I hope I'll look back at this trip in the same way in 30 years!!
We took that to Reno Nevada. Such a beautiful time! Will never forget it!
It's such a special experience :D
I wonder if I can do this from Southern CA to Denver. I really don't like the big airports. Seems like this can be really peaceful.
cool kicks Lucille right
Thanks for sharing your trip. Looks like you guys had a blast!
Those varying views!! 😍
The US is SO diverse!
I'm confused. Was it first class seat or a roomette? Maybe you can clear it up for me. As I understood, only seats had classes. The roomettes and rooms had no class.
Great video! Thanks for bringing us along!
9:51 Well, technically, you didn't arrive in San Francisco. You arrived in Emeryville, and you have to take BART to get into San Francisco.
wow this is going on my bucket list
Wow, love this video. Very clear and helpful since I'm contemplating doing a train ride. Thank you~
Thanks for posting this. I have seen all the videos. My family and I are leaving in less then a week. To go out on the cali Zephyr up to Portland on the coast starlight and back on the empire builder. Staying a couple days in San Fran. We have the family bedroom the whole way. We are looking forward to this. I feel like a kid waiting for this trip to start. Great review both of you.
Wow that's a beautiful trip!! You will have so much fun :D
How was everything? 🙂
It was a good trip. We were 12 hours late getting into San Fran. We sat just outside Chicago for over 2 hours. The train hit a pedestrian literally 25 mins out of the station. Thankfully he lived. Which then delayed us the rest of the way. Other the. That the trip was wonderful. Kids got board but me and my wife absolutely loved it and was to do another one soon.
An enjoyable ride along, thanks. And, I also grew up on South 7th in the early 60s.
I know you didn’t go down in the lounge/cafe lower level in the video, but there are 2 kinds of cafe setups. The newer superliner 2 version is where it has the kind of cafe where it’s like a store where you just go get what you want and pay, but the older superliner 1 version is where you just go to a counter as you tell the cafe car attendant what you want as he gets it for you as the items are inside where he works. Do you remember which way it was in this lounge cafe on the train if you noticed?
Thank you for sharing your wonderful trip. It looks so adventurous and awesome. 🚆👍😃 It looks so beautiful with the snow!
Now for for a suprize trip back, on a GRAYHOUND! side bets on how many days it takes!
Love you both great train journey
Amazing views.
I had a lot of hope for your trip when I saw you. Very beautiful. Then "He" was on camera and I was quickly unhappy. Sigh. Way to take one for the team.
The two little shelves for storage are actually supposed to be steps to get in the bunk. Multi purpose!
thx for sharing...was great
all of Bobby's measurements are so funny. He measure everything by what he have seen. ( Bobby roals , capsules etc)
looool so true!!
Did this 9 years ago! So fun!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
thank you for being here!! :D
@@LucileHR 🙂
Love their enthusiasm! I'm ready to go.
:D
I liked the video but it would have been better is you also put the cost for the train ride . You both are so friendly and kind . Take care and aloha from Hawaii
The mountains in your photo are in Banff National Park in Canada. Lol. Not really linked to a US themed video.
Mom and I took my nephew who is a train buff on Amtrak from Trenton to Boston he love it but would never take a train against n to long track was pack until we left Newark most people got off there
you two look great , i am happy you are still together .
thank you :) I'm happy to be with Bobby too haha
@@LucileHR yeah bae have a nice day ! Sent kisses to Bobby
Damn I have to take a train trip for my birthday coming up I really have to. I really want to I really want to go visit Tennessee.

Thanks for sharing your experience - it looks epic guys!
thank you :D
It would be perfect if the train had free wifi. Overall, it looks really fun.
