As children of the 60s, my siblings and I became experts at avoiding Jello “salads.” They seemed to show up in multiple versions at every pot luck, picnic or family dinner. It took a certain amount of strategy to avoid eating the nasty things. We’re in our senior years now, and not one of us has ever made one.
That dress, however, is an absolutely charming revival. It looks beautiful on you, and I simply love the fabric.

@@baddie1shoe Luckily I was never in a position to be subjected to such a revolting thing (wouldn't call it food or dessert); gelatin (jello) is absolutely revolting. The way it jiggles is extremely disturbing and revolting as well. It should be banned in food products, quite frankly.

I like making Jello fluff which is jello, whipped cream and cottage cheese mixed together. I use an electric mixer to blend it all together and it tastes great. It’s better than the weird eldritch abomination with hotdogs and olives in it.

Gelatine was made widely available in the 1890s. During WW2 and the great depression it was cheap and easy to get, as it wasn't rationed, which led to the rise of Jello dishes (esp after lime jello was released). In the 1950s it was a kind of status symbol for housewives to show off that they not only had the time to make Jello dishes, their husbands also had jobs that paid well enough to afford a refrigerator.

The history of these salads is actually fascinating! They come from very labour intensive aspics that can be nice. Then this became a cheap industrial alternative, and they took it a bit far, There's several articles online if you search for the history, and it's worth the read.

This is why I love mid century appliances and design. Not only were things designed to function smoothly, they were also engineered to last.
I still have my grandma's scale and office hole-puncher from the 40's, and they work better than ANY newer products. Despite getting kicked around for the last 80 years or so. Just like that Duracel bettery slogan: "Takes a Lickin and Keeps on Tickin." That's a slogan from back in the post industrial boom during the race to space era, when everything was built to last through hell and highwater.
When I was younger, I didn't like grandma's hole puncher because it was "old" and big and clunky. It was made of solid metal and weighed at about 20 lbs! But that's precisely what makes it so good! I can't tell you how many new digital scales and plastic hole punchers I've had that have bit the dust within the first year. I finally copped on to the fact that grandma's appliances and tools were the best ever made.
All it took was a little WD40, and that hole puncher was back in business. It is industrial strength! It can punch about 20 sheets of paper all at once as many times in a row as you need it to. Just pull the lever and SWOOSH! Like a little chopping block! None of the screws have ever come loose. It's just simple, clean, strong, and effective.
Same with all tools and appliances from back then.
I wish I'd saved gramdma's stove, washer/dryer, car... everything!! Those things were built like tanks and finely crafted! I miss analog technologies.

I grew up in the 50's and 60' and I LOVE Jello salads. I make on with lime jello, cream cheese, Campbells asparagus soup onion powder/juice, pecans, celery and green pepper. My family loves this and I make it for every holiday.

I love vintage cook books, and this Jello salad actually looks appetizing compared to some of the ones I've seen recipes for. Your kitchen and outfit are adorable.

The one my Mema always made was Sunshine Salad. Orange jello, shredded carrots, and pineapple. Weird combination but surprisingly it worked. I crave it now and again 😂
