Something that has helped me while I’ve been learning Trout Spey is to loop the running line onto each of your lower hand fingers so your running line isn’t in a huge loop downstream. Sometimes that tension is enough to kill the distance of a good cast because the running line is being pulled back by the current. Hope that makes sense.
Great tip, thank you!
Check out the Korkers river spikes here - great traction for the colder months: Korkers Wading Boots and soles: alnk.to/5F6UL4K
There is a Scottish comedian called Bill Connelly who once said “it’s never the wrong weather - only the wrong clothes”.
Love to get out in the snow, there is never anyone around but the fishing is usually dynamite.
Great video!
Well said and thank you!
@@FlyFishDan you’ve totally inspired me to get out this month and hit the water!
Love hearing that - this is why I do what I do!
@@FlyFishDan amazing. Then keep it up as you are inspiring a bunch of people!
I hope my videos one day have as much to offer as yours do!
I love cold weather fishing, not crowed; fish are biting; my biggest trout caught in February 2010, 27"...........he ran me up and down the river.
Nice, now that is a tank!
FFD, just back home from a little vaca in Nicaragua. Can't wait to jump back out in the freezing cold, although I will probably wait for this week's front to pass through first. That rainbow you caught was great. Keep trying the Spey and don't get frustrated casting; it's a skill to learn like double hauling or anything else. And yeah, it's temping to overhead cast a Spey - but don't 😉. Get out here and I'll get you casting like a pro (even if I need to recruit a guide). ☮ from Idaho.
Welcome home JustAl! Big snow in the mountains this week for sure. Can't wait to get out there myself!
Love having the river all to myself.
It's a good thing for sure :))
This is the second video I’ve watched from you and I really think you do a great job with everything.Keep up great work and continued success in the new year.Tight lines in 2024👍
Awesome - thanks again for taking the time to watch. Cheers!
Hopefully going up there in February to see Red's and do some fishing. Love the wintertime and your show. Fish On!
It's a great shop and even better burger at their restaurant! Great group of people there for sure.
Thanks for the video Dan, you've inspired me to get out there in spite of the cold. 😎
You bet! It can be pretty rewarding during the winter months for sure :))
Was awesome to see you on the river, we were going to fish that hole too. Glad Jason’s tip landed a nice one!
Great to meet you as well - great day indeed (and great burger at the Red's restaurant!)
Only time of year I like to fly fish in NJ is winter- plenty of elbow room, big, picky fish- and scenery! Nice video Dan.
Thanks 👍
Nice video and explanations! First of your videos I've seen. I was thinking this looked a lot like the Yakima canyon and sure enough! I fish there a lot too! It's nice to see how low the flows are for wading this time of year. Happy New Year!
Thanks! It was a very good day on the Yakima for sure, have to love those big winter bows!
Knowing how to read the stream is paramount. Tight Lines! Dan
Agreed! Cheers and FISH-ON!!
Cool video. Loved the trout spey tip. Learning to spey cast isn't easy but it's not that hard either. Watch the Red's tutorial video! I landed my first tank on my spey rod here on Boxing Day! From what I gather, spey casting is a little harder to get the LONGER you've been single handed casting. I'd go out and just practice your anchors for 20 minutes. You'll get it and when you do it's REALLY fun! Fish On Dan! And Happy Birthday 🎉
Thanks Dave, I'm getting better at it...just need more practice. Happy New Year to you!!
I got my local trout pond all to myself today. I agree, most people do not want to brave the weather.
Nice! So good to have the day to yourself. Love this time of year, all alone almost every trip!
That Rainbow was beautiful! Nice catch!
Thanks!
I gotta wait till Monday😭 the stream I wanna fish will be open season January 1st! Awesome video too loved it 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Nice, almost here :))
Would love a meal at Reds , but it's a bit of a drive from Somerset 🇬🇧 , thanks for the video cheers , 😊
Pretty impressed with that Cortland 4x tippet. Way stronger than what I was using before.
Same - was a good switch for me too.
Courtland is by far the best leaders and tippet I have used. Even noticed a big difference tying knots in cold weather as opposed to other brands. Knots sink in tighter and the line stays fluid casting at temps around 20deg.
I'm with you there, the leaders even have a different feel (soft and supple is the best way I can describe them...Lol) when you unwrap them!
Is there a temperature below which you won’t even bother or have you found success even in the low thirties of winter?
Typically, if the temps get into the low twenties, my fingers and toes start to fail and it's so miserable I wait until things warm up a bit
Great video. What line are you using, looked green in the video.
I was using a Cortland trout line, great fly line!
@@FlyFishDan thank you. I use a mono rig and thought it looked like that.
If this was filmed Saturday then I almost ran into you for a second time at the second spot in the canyon.
Just look for the really tall angler wearing DRYFT waders ;))
Well done
Thank you!
Damn what a video 👍
Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to watch :))
Happy New Year to all and to tight lines and great memories keep em coming Dan 👍👍🤜🤛
Thanks, you too!
I see you are always carrying two rods. What are they and why you chose those?
Hey Kevin - they are both my rods ( fishonrods.com ) One is a 5-weight and the other a trout spey. Typically I like to have two setups with me at all times, quick switch when I want to try something different. Cheers!
Secret hole? It’s not no-name hole. It’s the Big O hole named after me since I showed you my fav place on the river. 😂
I don't know what you're talking about James...;)
We dont fish for river trout in winter here in UK, illegal and not the done thing old boy!
We have a few open year round in the states - which I am happy for!
Well, we do have the Grayling to fish for so are lucky.
I suppose you colonists have to catch something or starve ,,,
