Very nice looking pigs. I use shipley a lot for my program. Little advise when cutting your pigs cut away from yourself please thought you were gonna get cut doing it ouch. Also if you have the extra person to sit on the pig for you use them so your free and able to make the cuts a lot easier and not stressing yourself and the pig as much. But please keep us all updated on how the showing of them turn out. Thanks

It's definitely nerve wracking to say the least! This is the simplest method we've found. Of course we're not very fast at it yet, but I've seen other farmers use this method and do it completely from start to finish in less than a minute!

Our box cutter has a brand new blade and is plenty sharp enough. There are lots of farmers that use them to castrate. The problem was that I was inexperienced and did not make the first cuts deep enough or long enough. I’ve done several more since then (5 in our last litter) and just keep getting better and faster.

    • @nickamandus5072

Absolutely not, nothing about it is enjoyable but it has to be done. If the males are not castrated, the meat becomes undesirable. We grow our pigs for meat for our local area and need to have the best product for our customers, so the castration is necessary.

No, nothing about castration is enjoyable. All of our county fair pigs that are male HAVE to be castrated though, or the kids are unable to show them for their 4H project.
