The 3 Ace songs were the only good ones on Unmasked. Just like on Dynasty, Ace saves the album from being a total loss. The rest of Unmasked is lightweight crap. Still, it’s a much better album than the one that came next (The Elder). In my opinion that one was an all time low.

I remember being completely underwhelmed by this album when it came out, but that wasn’t new to me anymore at that point. Unmasked was no more of a let down than Dynasty had been a year earlier. I like this song though.

Hey Sonnie Veldhuis ... well said. As someone recently said, when you buy (or download these days) a KISS album from 1973 to 1982 you didn't buy it for Gene fire-breathing/spitting blood; Paul's vocals; Peter's non-existent drumming on Dynasty and Unmasked BUT because of Ace. No ACE = NO KISS.

Yeah, I’ve heard and read about how Australia really embraced KISS at this point in their career, which to me as an old American fan from the 70’s is a strange concept to wrap my head around. Up here their popularity was taking a serious nosedive at this time. A year or so later, or whenever it was that “Music From The Elder” came out, they pretty much hit bottom here in America. What was it that kept them popular at this time down under?
A very cool song, actually. I do love the whole Umasked album, album cover, songs and all. And Ace was on fire! The catchiest songs on the album are all his.
He had more songs on this record than Gene did
Ace was the *ONLY* factor in saving Unmasked from being a complete waste of wax. His 3 songs are all you need to hear on that album. The rest is lightweight, soulless, easy listening dreck. I know that some people really liked “Shandi”, but it just doesn’t sound like KISS to me. Sounds more like Air Supply or something.

Back in the day I'd have wanted to 'talk to you' Ace. Lol but today I'm a happily married woman. But kiss is still my favorite band. Me and my best friend from 6th grade used to 'argue' over Peter and Ace and which of us was going to b their girlfriend. Miss those days..

One of Ace’s best songs with KISS
Unmasked was, and still is, an underrated album. “Talk to Me”, “Two sides of the coin”, “Shandi”, and my favorite “Naked City” are great songs. It wasn’t a huge hit in the US because Kiss fans didn’t like the change in direction, but it’s a good album no matter who the band was.
Just read your coment and listened "naked city", incredible song, by far one of best songs of KISS, underrated.
I completely agree! It's an album you don't think of right away, but is definitely one of their best.
Also "Is That You" was a great and catchy song. KISS took it as a demo and make something really cool!
Shandi is one of the worst songs KISS has ever written. It no more than a 1/2 cool,teed track with filler. Unmasked is anything but an underrated album. Most of the tracks should have been ditched for straight up hard rockers.
I don’t think it was so much a matter of the fans not liking the new direction. That had already started earlier with Dynasty when they went disco. They had already alienated a pretty large percentage of their old fans with that album. I was one of them. To me and most other old fans, Unmasked was just more of the same. Might as well have named it “Dynasty - Part II”. A lot of it too was the times. Punk and new wave had really changed the playing field by 1979-80. And then you had the big falling out with Peter Criss, who only played on one song on Dynasty and didn’t even play at all on Unmasked, even if he was shown on the album cover (in cartoon form). It just didn’t sound like or feel like KISS anymore. It had gotten really stale and irrelevant.
Gene has made it pretty clear over the years that KISS was always more of a business than a band, but at least until roughly ‘78 they did a good job of hiding that fact, or at least not making it glaringly obvious. By the time Unmasked came out, the jig was up.

Unmasked is a Under Rated album but to me its my favorite album
I don’t know exactly who’s doing all the ‘rating’, or if there’s a select group of people, or a rating organization… but Unmasked is actually *VERY* worthy of it’s lack of popularity and/or ratings. Believe me, I’ve given that album so many fair shakes through the years and have done my best to approach it with an open mind, but every single time I reach the same old conclusion: it’s a big, hot, steaming pile of feces with 3 decent songs on it. All 3 of them are Ace’s songs. The rest of that album is pure crap.
That’s fine if you like it, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a bonafide turd of an album.

Ace was (and still is) a household name for people from our generation… regardless of whether you were into KISS or not.

This was Eric’s very first public appearance with KISS. Too bad it’s lip-synced and mimed. Would’ve been nice to hear him actually playing drums.

Well, it is essentially a solo recording for him. He’s playing all the parts except drums here (on the studio recording), and the drums are the same guy who plays drums on his first two solo albums, so there ya go. It’s only a KISS song by name.

This is a cool song and a bit of a departure from the normal KISS music that you're used to hearing.
It’s essentially an Ace Frehley solo song. If I remember correctly, Ace played all guitars, including bass parts in the studio on this one. It’s just him and Anton, and no one else. It’s a decent tune from a crappy album. Genre-wise it’s pretty much power pop, which definitely doesn’t fit with the ‘classic’ KISS sound… but then again the entire Unmasked album doesn’t really have a drop of the classic KISS sound on it.
Ace definitely saved Unmasked from being a complete turd. His 3 songs are the only worthwhile things about that album.

Definitely *NOT* classic KISS. “Deuce” is classic KISS. “Cold Gin” is classic KISS. Even “Love Gun” is classic KISS. This is basically an Ace Frehley solo song. Ace is playing all the guitar parts here, as well as the bass track. Anton Fig is playing drums, and he’s also the same guy who plays drums on Ace’s most well known solo albums. Not to mention this is a power pop song, which is a genre KISS isn’t exactly well known for dabbling in.
It’s a great tune, yes… but it’s anything but “classic KISS”.

When KISS toured, it's as if they took over this country.........They were amazing times
Hey Johnny Rotten .... I remember as I lived in Sydney. KISS took over after ABBA left in 1978. I Was Made for Loving You was huge then followed by Sure Know Something which was a hit in Oz. Shandi became a hit on Countdown .... followed by the successful KISS concerts in November, 1980 .. and then Talk to Me which made the charts in early 1981. KISS then disappeared as our home grown AC/DC smashed them with Back in Black.
We got kiss in Perth before the east coast shows .that was pretty rare in those days . Molly and all the gang had to fly west lol

Ace was the SOUL of KISS
He was definitely the one true rock ‘n roller in KISS. Gene and Paul are businessmen. Peter was more of a jazz guy who dabbled in rock ‘n roll, but Ace was the real deal… addictions and all. I saw the ‘classic’ lineup of KISS 3 different times, in the 70’s. They were my very first concert, in June 1976 at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston. Blue Oyster Cult opened. All 3 times I saw them, it was Ace who grabbed my attention the whole way through. Later on in the early 90’s I saw Ace play a shit-hot club gig at the Mason Jar in Phoenix. He rocked the f’n roof off the place. He was on fire that night, and played a bunch of old KISS tunes. That show was probably even better than any of the concerts I saw in the 70’s, to be honest. The intimate setting of playing in a club made all the difference, plus whoever was doing sound just nailed it perfectly.

I se them live 4 times over the years. 2 of this times With the 4 orginal members whoo are really Kiss fore me. 2015 Kiss has be on stage fore 40 years!! Fantasic.
